    For future readers: A part of this answer is probably obsoleted by the introduction of std::shared_ptr in C++11: If you use that instead of boost::shared_ptr, the third point doesn't apply any more. But the rest of the answer is still valid! Commented Dec 3, 2015 at 11:43
