15If memory store data in 4 byte chunks then why its not adding 2 padding bytes to the unsigned short(its 2 byte long) ? or compiler just add padding bytes to 1st and last members of structure ? can you please clarify it.User– User2014-03-06 11:33:18 +00:00Commented Mar 6, 2014 at 11:33

1Whoever said these padding bytes are meaningless does not know that misaligned data access is an oddity of x86 architecture. These bytes are necessary to avoid exceptions when processor tries to load - say an integer - data which straddles its natural alignment boundary.Tanveer Badar– Tanveer Badar2019-11-20 06:27:37 +00:00Commented Nov 20, 2019 at 6:27

7@TanveerBadar they meant that the values of the padding bytes are meaningless, not their presence.Len has moved to Codidact– Len has moved to Codidact2020-09-22 23:36:18 +00:00Commented Sep 22, 2020 at 23:36

1@MorElmaliach Padding happens wrt accessibility of members of the struct. Read the accepted answer of stackoverflow.com/questions/11772553/… thread for more clarity.Jeyaram– Jeyaram2021-11-29 10:44:10 +00:00Commented Nov 29, 2021 at 10:44

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. python-3.x), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
