Nobody Doesn't Like Sarah!

Hello! Sorry it has been a while...I believe I'll just delve right into the topic of the day, rather than bore you with what is going on in my life....

Today's Topic: Pearl Jam!

Okay, I know some of you who know me (most of the people that know me though aren't even aware that I have a Journal here, so none of you are here anyway...so, never mind) were wondering when I'd talk about Pearl Jam. Well, I am today.

Yes, Pearl Jam is my favorite band. They are the best thing to come out of the whole Seattle scene. Those who don't like them must have never heard them. Those who like them, love them. Those who are trying to make sense of what I'm saying, are bored now.

So, let us flash back, once again, to the day that I "discovered" Pearl Jam. But, first, a background of the Pearl Jam in my life: I've always simi-liked them. I grew up listening to them through the vent in my room, as my brother listened to them. However, I was young then, and tried to drown the sounds out with my Fisher-Price record player (I listened to mostly the Dirty Dancing soundtrack or maybe some Janet Jackson...yes, I had a HUGE R&B phase in my life. It has passed, but I still listen to it now and then). Then, in middle school, my mom bought "Ten" at the Record Exchange for like $3 (it was on tape). She liked "Black", so that is all of that album I really go to hear.

Then, the fateful day when I, myself, realized the joy that is Pearl Jam. New Years Eve, about a half an hour before 1999. I was at a sleep over at a friends house. We were waiting for the ball to drop, and we were flipping through the channels, landing on MTV. "Jeremy" was on. I'll admit, Eddie was the first thing to catch my eye. I was going through a long hair phase then (and even still now...gotta love the long hair on a guy), where the only guys I'd look at looked exactly like Eddie. Then, I thought...he is hot...I know Pearl Jam from my brother and mom...I know I like their music...why not start liking them full time.

Then, as I bought each album (Yield first) it became less and less a school girl crush, and more and more of just worshiping their sound, their lyrics, their Pearl Jammy-ness. It seemed like it took me forever to collect all of their albums. Then, once I did that, I began collecting their singles, soundtracks they were on, magazines they were in, movies/videos they were in (Singles is a great movie! You need to see it!).

Then, it happened. The peak of my Pearl Jam worshiping. I saw them in concert. I was in shock the whole time. It was a dream. The best concert of my life. My heart pounds just thinking of it. I was towards the back of the stadium (it was outside), it was raining and my back was soaked, but I didn't realize it until I left. It was like I had been out of my body for three hours...and, then when we left, I was like, "Wow, I'm wet..what happened?" It scared me, but also excited me.

It was the best experience of my life. They played everything I wanted to hear (except for "Dirty Frank"..I've given up on ever hearing that live).

So, favorite album of theirs? "No Code". Best PJ album by far. It is perfect, and most of the PJ posers have never even heard it. Most stick with "Ten" (which is a great album, but the only album that said posers can remember).

Favorite song? "Given to Fly". It is a great song that makes me feel things that I've never felt with a song before, especially if I haven't heard it in a while. It is one of the many songs I want played at my funeral. It is also a great song to drive to.

So, why should you listen to Pearl Jam? One, because I do, and as we've now realized, I know more than you when it comes to what is good and what is bad in music (just kidding by the way). Two, they are the only band from the "grunge" thing that is still making GOOD music, that people still hear. Three, they continue to evolve. Each album has it's own element that makes it special (no matter which drummer they have...by the way, if Matt leaves, I'll mourn for years and years to come....please don't leave us Matt!) Four, why not listen to them? I mean, it is Pearl Jam. They wrote "Release" and other songs that make you smile and cry all at the same time.

To close, some lyrics.

"Given To Fly"
by: Pearl Jam

He could've tuned in, tuned in
But he tuned out
A bad time, nothing could save him
Alone in a corridor, waiting, locked out
He got up outta there, ran for hundreds of miles
He made it to the ocean, had a smoke in a tree
The wind rose up, set him down on his knee

A wave came crashing like a fist to the jaw
Delivered him wings, "Hey, look at me now"
Arms wide open with the sea as his floor
Oh, power, oh

He's.. flying
Whole
High.. wide, oh

He floated back down 'cause he wanted to share
His key to the locks on the chains he saw everywhere
But first he was stripped and then he was stabbed
By faceless men, well, fuckers
He still stands

And he still gives his love, he just gives it away
The love he receives is the love that is saved
And sometimes is seen a strange spot in the sky
A human being that was given to fly

High.. flying
Oh, oh
High.. flying
Oh, oh
He's flying
Oh, oh
