The Shocking Experiments of Miss Mary Bennet by Melinda Taub

I absolutely loved The Scandalous Confessions of Lydia Bennet, Witch by Melinda Taub so you can imagine my glee when she wrote a second book, The Shocking Experiments of Miss Mary Bennet. Even the fact that it was a library book and my dog chewed up the cover and I had to pay for it did not lessen my joy. Here is the publisher’s summary of the plot: Awkward, plain, and overlooked, Mary Bennet has … Continue reading The Shocking Experiments of Miss Mary Bennet by Melinda Taub

Fabulous Bodies by Chuck Tingle

The protagonist of Fabulous Bodies, Poppy, appears on the scene as a horrible person who has survived a horrible childhood. Early on, she meets someone who says, “I’m not a bad guy. I’m just a survivor.” Over the course of the novel, Poppy learns what the difference is. This story by Chuck Tingle is a gory horror-thriller that I absolutely ate up, but be prepared for a high body count and a lot of implausibility. … Continue reading Fabulous Bodies by Chuck Tingle

Kickass Women in History: Jacquotte Delahaye and Anne Dieu-le-Veut

This month I give you a buccaneer who probably didn’t really exist and one who probably did. Both of them have come down through history as legendary figures though there’s little actual physical evidence of their lives. Still, never let it be said that I passed up the chance to share a good legend, especially if there’s a chance that at least part of it may be true. A word about words: ‘pirate’ is a … Continue reading Kickass Women in History: Jacquotte Delahaye and Anne Dieu-le-Veut

Hell’s Heart by Alexis Hall

I read Hell’s Heart months ago, and my opinion of the book has only risen since then because I give extra points to any book that sticks in my head over time. Every time I think about Hell’s Heart I smile, even though all I really remember of it is that everyone is queer, everyone is in thrall to capitalism, and the characters spend their time hunting giant creatures through space. In other words, it’s … Continue reading Hell’s Heart by Alexis Hall

Kickass Women in History: Carlota and Fermina

The stories of rebellion by enslaved peoples has been largely erased or occluded from history, and when these stories are told, they usually center men. In Cuba, however, two women became legends because of the leadership roles they took in rebellion. Carlota and Fermina were decisive, brave, and brutal. Both women were kidnapped from the Yoruba Nation and given the last name ‘Lucumí’, a word which refers to Afro-Cubans of Yoruba descent. The Triunvirato sugar … Continue reading Kickass Women in History: Carlota and Fermina

The Trembling Hand by Mathelinda Nabugodi

The Trembling Hand: Reflections of a Black Woman in the Romantic Archive is a great book for people who are interested in the Romantics (in this context, I’m referring to artists who were part of the artistic movement known as Romanticism). Author Nabugodi assumes that you are already at least somewhat familiar with this movement and with the lives and works of William Wordsworth, Samuel Coleridge, Mary and Percy Shelley, John Keats, and Lord Byron. … Continue reading The Trembling Hand by Mathelinda Nabugodi
