Hi, welcome back to our Guardian drama Slo-Mo Rewatch! Watch half an episode a week, and then come and chat about it here in comments. Or you can just jump into the comments without rewatching, of course!

Here is the first half of episode 18. On to the second half!

Episode 18 from 23:38:

Summary: Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei chase Ye Huo, but stop at a T junction. Lin Jing and Da Qing catch up, and the black energy detector shows both Ye Huo and another black energy signature. Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei follow Ye Huo, and a fight ensues, but eventually Ye Huo concedes defeat. Zhao Yunlan asks about Zhu Jiu, but Ye Huo doesn't know the name. Meanwhile Lin Jing and Da Qing find Ye Huo's base. Bo Bi also turns up, and all three of them get jumped by Ye Huo's friends. And at the fight club, Zhu Jiu kills one of the manager's flunkies and then the manager himself, but not before being extra-dramatically threatening at him.

Shen Wei watches as Zhao Yunlan uses a pallet to protect himself from Ye Huo's fire

Zhao Yunlan, Shen Wei and Ye Huo arrive at Ye Huo's house. Zhao Yunlan gets a phone call about what happened at the fight club. Ye Huo's friends demand Ye Huo's release, threatening their captives. Zhao Yunlan quips that they should be in school instead, and he and Shen Wei start discussing the Dixing education system, then segue into whether or not Zhao Yunlan will be allowed to go to Dixing again. Then Ye Huo tries to talk reason into his friends. In flashback we learn that Ye Huo discovered Zhu Jiu's life force-stealing scheme and has since been trying to protect people from it. Then Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng arrive to free the hostages. Ye Huo expects to be taken back to Dixing for judgment, but is granted mercy. Shen Wei tells him to leave the city, and Zhao Yunlan tells Chu Shuzhi to take the human boys somewhere else too. Lao-Chu gives the trophy belt back to Ye Huo. Meanwhile Ya Qing reminds Zhu Jiu of the three missions Ye Zun gave them, and Zhu Jiu struggles with his injury from the black energy gun, which is getting worse.

Quote:

Ye Huo to Chu Shuzhi: "Actually, I envy you, for being able to live freely and easily here."

Chu Shuzhi: "Yes, true, but my boss is a bastard who's full of himself."

Detail(s):

When Shen Wei summons his dao, ending the fight with Ye Huo, at first he holds it with the edge against Ye Huo's neck - but then he turns it, so it's the blunt side pointing at Ye Huo. He threatens Ye Huo, but only so far, signalling that he's not out for blood, and he's careful with the sharp edge of his weapon.

Questions: Which this your favourite part/scene/moment in this half-episode? Any favourite lines? Why do Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan stop at the T junction? How does tracking Ye Huo via the trophy belt work? Why does Ye Huo stop fighting back eventually? What do you think is the best way of getting schools in Dixing? (Is it removing the Regent? *g*) How confused were Ye Huo's friends by Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei not taking their hostage-taking very seriously? Is Ye Huo as a masked saviour a parallel for the Envoy? What exactly does the black energy gun do, that Zhu Jiu seems to be dying from his injury? What is the third mission Ye Zun gave them? And finally, any thoughts about whether (or how) any of this connects with the novel?

(These are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in!)

This is the fanworks round-up post for June! Please link in the comments to any Guardian (or related fandoms) fanworks you created or enjoyed last month.
  • all kinds of fanworks are welcome – fic, art, vids, picspams, etc. - including those made for exchanges and events
  • new chapters of WIPs count
  • meta or discussion posts, too
  • whether or not you've already linked these in a post of their own, we still want them here!

If you're linking to fanworks you didn't create yourself, please clearly mark these "REC", so there's no confusion about authorship/creatorship.

(And please still do link your fanworks, meta, etc. separately, in their own post, at any time!)

So ... what Guardian and related fandoms works did you create or enjoy in June?

Hi, and welcome back to the Guardian drama Slo-Mo Rewatch. Watch half an episode a week, at your leisure, and then come and chat about it here in comments. Or you can just jump into the comments without rewatching, of course!

Here are the previous weeks' rewatch posts.

Episode 18, up to 23:38

Summary
At the fight club, Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng watch a fight, waiting for their target to make an appearance. When he doesn't, Chu Shuzhi gets impatient, jumps into the ring himself and wins a bout to draw him out. It works, and a fight between the two of them is scheduled. Guo Changcheng reports this to Zhao Yunlan, who is furious and threatens to fire both of them. In the locker room, Chu Shuzhi is prepping for his fight with Ye Huo when his defeated opponent comes in and asks Chu Shuzhi to take revenge for his dead brother. At the SID, a restless Zhao Yunlan decides to go check on them. Shen Wei goes with.

Chu Shuzhi and Ye Huo do battle in the ring. Ye Huo reveals his fire power, and Chu Shuzhi knocks his mask off. The spectators fall silent. Chu Shuzhi gains the upper hand, and the crowd is angry and breaks into the ring. Ye Huo escapes. Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei arrive, and Zhao Yunlan shoots the ceiling to stop the riot. He counsels the brother against revenge and advises him to go back home, but the brother goes outside and confronts Ye Huo instead. We find out the rest of the dead guy's backstory along with Ye Huo, who gives his condolences. But the surviving brother won't let it lie, and during their subsequent fight, he pulls out a molotov cocktail. Ye Huo retaliates with his own fire, and Shen Wei intervenes as the Envoy, sending the surviving brother away.

Then Shen Wei openly shifts into his Haixing appearance and asks Ye Huo to accompany him back to Dixing. Ye Huo says he can't and makes his escape. Zhao Yunlan drives up in pursuit, and Shen Wei gets in the car.

Quote
SW: To be honest, back then I sent [Chu Shuzhi] here to be my spy.
ZYL: You think I didn't notice that? But Lao Chu is unsociable and kind of grumpy, and you are not a base person. You surely will not do anything bad. So, I just turned a blind eye to him.
SW: Then, does it mean you will not blame me for this incident?
ZYL: This incident? It doesn't exist.

Detail
Guo Changcheng finds the dark energy detector unresponsive at the fight club, which suggests there aren't any Dixingren in the crowd (at least in the parts where he's pointing it).

Questions
Do you have a favourite scene or line of dialogue from this half episode? Do you think Zhao Yunlan is right to be furious at Chu Shuzhi? Do you sympathise with Bo Bi, the man seeking revenge against Ye Huo on his brother's behalf? Do you have any thoughts or feelings about Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng's dynamic in these scenes? (Does Chu Shuzhi know that Xiao Guo reported in to the chief?) How does the betting pool at the fight club make any money if Ye Huo always wins? Do you have any thoughts or feelings about the Weilan dynamic in this half episode?

Did you see any parallels in these scenes with other parts of the drama? If you're familiar with the novel, any thoughts about how the drama adaptation compares, if at all?

(As usual, these are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in. We'd love to hear your thoughts!)

And here is our schedule -- if you can, please sign up to host a post!

Folks may have noticed that the site has been slow for logged-out users over the last while. This is partly because we separate traffic by logged-in, "logged out but have visited the site before", and "logged out, never visited the site before" and assign the fewest resources to the last category (because we're pretty confident the overwhelming majority of it is bot and scraper traffic, even if it's often impossible to say for sure). The flood of garbage traffic is a plague and a scourge the entire internet is dealing with, and it's hitting small sites the hardest as operators get better and better at cloaking their requests to look like real, authentic use. We long ago hit the point where adding more resources is a possible solution (because they just eat them up as soon as we do), and splitting traffic lets us keep the site usable for our actual users without wasting too much server power on garbage.

We've now, lucky us, reached the point where the "logged out, have never visited the site before" path is just flooded all the time, and the "logged out but have visited the site before" path is suffering some of the overflow. We've made some changes to the routing to try to improve things for logged out users who have visited the site before and keep it at "it may be a little bit slow, but at least it works" instead of "it keeps timing out", and we've seen some improvements, but if you're accustomed to browsing the site while logged out, I'm really sorry but it may continue to be a little miserable.

You will get the fastest page loads and the best performance by browsing the site logged in. If you are having trouble loading the front page to log in, bookmark the direct login page. We can't route the front page to the "more power" server pool, because it's a common target for garbage traffic, but we've switched /login over to "more power" and we'll try to keep it there as long as we can unless it starts getting slammed, too.
