Ours showed what happens when you remove the safety net. At the HelloStavanger conference, our developer Glenn Jacobsen stepped on stage with no presentation, no pre-recorded demo, and no scripted path. Instead, he live-rebuilt the entire Odin compiler, wired up graphics with Raylib, triggered errors on purpose, fixed them, explained them — and let the audience experience real development as it happens: curious, chaotic, and full of learning. His session, “𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: 𝗪𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗲𝗱”, became a reminder of something we value deeply at Munu: Progress happens when people are allowed to explore, break things safely, and iterate fast. SBOMs are everywhere. Assurance still isn’t. Modern build pipelines can automatically generate CycloneDX or SPDX SBOMs, and new standards like OWASP TEA aim to streamline artifact exchange. Yet in practice, many SBOM programs struggle to produce meaningful security outcomes. At the Nordic Software Security Summit, our CTO Jens Schmidt will share lessons from the field, including: • SBOM inventories still managed in spreadsheets • Hundreds of supplier SBOMs received, but few actually reviewed • Automatically generated SBOMs failing basic quality checks The core issue is often SBOM data quality. #SwedishOpenDataCalendar December 5th, 2025 Yesterday I wrote about a 1-star dataset according to Tim Berners-Lee’s scale of open data. On the other extreme is The National Library of Sweden (Kungliga biblioteket). They have an API that returns open linked data about their open datasets. This would make it easier to integrate the data with other data you have, provided you have done the work on your side both when it comes to data consumption and on the other data itself. Some of the National Library’s datasets are built on linked data themselves. One example is the national bibliography that is available as a dataset through an API. The information on authors is linked to authority data in one of the other datasets. This is where I ran into problems.   Not really because the data was linked. The problem instead is to get all the data. I managed to get the bibliography fine, a download of just over 3 gigabytes although it was quite slow. But the authority data containing information on authors and other things made available through the same API would fail at some point after an hour or so. By that time, I would have a partial XML file with JSON-LD statements inside.    The fact that it is encapsulated in XML at least helps me to be sure that I didn’t receive everything. If I did, I would expect to see the end tag for the root element at the end of the downloaded file. It looks like the data is streaming through their API, sometimes at a few megabytes per second but often at just a measly few kilobytes per second. On my computer I have the files from a few failed download attempts. Some are at around 300 megabytes and some at 600 megabytes. How close are they to the complete download? I don’t really know. (I guess I could analyse the bibliography file and see how many links are broken to get an estimate.) Their API does support sending in date ranges based on update information so in theory it should be possible to fetch everything in chunks. But it would be nice to have a batch export to download (that isn’t in MARC format behind a FTP server only accessible for select libraries). That way download is only limited by transfer bandwidth, it can be pre-compressed, and I could know file size and checksum beforehand. Until then I won’t know who wrote “Christmas Eve at Santa's”.

This morning I joined the GVIP, Global Vulnerability Intelligence Platform, community call. It is a new initiative aiming to improve vulnerability management and intelligence. In simpler terms: missing data. The discussion was lively led by Olle E Johansson. I highlighted two recurring problems we face in embedded systems: - patched software. Once you patch upstream code locally (or apply patches from someone else), current naming schemes and vulnerability databases fail to describe what you are actually running - package configuration. Whether your product is affected by a vulnerability often depends on build time (or run time) configuration options. That information is rarely captured in a usable way Another topic that generated strong discussion was KEV, Known Exploited Vulnerabilities, catalogues and how they should be integrated into workflows. I am looking forward to more discussions, and even more to concrete work starting on these subjects. More embedded voices in this space would be very welcome! As a software engineer, one sometimes has to handle localisation. Thankfully we have ISO-3166 and ISO-639 to help us with country- and language-codes. There is room for confusion though... sv-SE = Swedish in Sweden (quite common) se-SV = Northern Sami in El Salvador (probably not as common) 😏
