On 16 May, during Illumination Day and the International Day of Light, we highlight the impact of lighting beyond simple illumination. 💡 https://lnkd.in/ewJQKktj Lighting design today shapes how we experience buildings, supports wellbeing and improves the performance of spaces. From visual comfort and atmosphere to sustainability and energy efficiency, architectural lighting design has become an essential part of modern engineering and architecture. In our latest article, we explore how lighting design evolves beyond the desk and transforms buildings into environments that are comfortable, efficient and visually compelling. From offices and healthcare to education and hospitality, lighting directly influences how spaces are seen, felt and experienced. Discover how lighting design connects creativity, engineering and sustainability to shape the buildings of tomorrow. Healthcare systems across Europe are facing growing pressure from demographic change, digital transformation and increasing demands for resilience. At the same time, hospitals and care environments must continue to deliver efficient, patient-centred care while adapting to future uncertainties. In this interview, Peter Deneut, Healthcare Director at Sweco Belgium, shares perspectives on how these shifts are reshaping healthcare architecture and planning. The discussion explores how healthcare facilities are evolving from large, centralised hospitals toward more flexible and integrated care environments supported by digital tools, smart technologies and data-driven decision-making. It also highlights the growing importance of sustainability, climate resilience and preparedness in healthcare infrastructure. Water is becoming more complex to manage — sometimes there’s too much, too little or it’s too polluted.  Sweco’s new insight report highlights Europe’s growing water challenges and outlines six key actions to secure sustainable and resilient water systems. Water treatment is becoming increasingly important. For wastewater treatment in Europe, Sweco estimates that removing micropollutants such as pharmaceuticals and PFAS would increase average water costs by around 6 per cent. This reflects a broader systemic challenge, where Europe’s water systems are under growing pressure — expected to meet increasing demands while facing rising pollution, climate change and stricter regulations. There is a widening gap between the real cost of water and what is currently reflected in water tariffs and investment decisions. 👉 Read more in the report: Too much, too little, too polluted — Taking on Europe’s water challenges https://lnkd.in/dqfHEG3w #UrbanInsight #WaterResilience #SustainableWater #SwecoGroup

The rapid advancement of AI and digitalisation is transforming the conditions for planning, designing and operating societal infrastructure. Data analysis, modelling and automated processes are becoming central to how projects are delivered. “AI driven automation, increasingly powerful digital twins, predictive analytics and advanced smart building automation are shaping the next wave of digital innovation,” says Luka Obuljen, Chief Digital Officer at Sweco Belgium. “These technologies will unlock deeper insight, faster decision-making and new possibilities for designing and operating more resilient and sustainable environments.” One example is Sweco’s Flexibility Tool, which helps optimise energy systems by enabling smarter, data-informed decisions across infrastructure and buildings, highlighting how digital innovation can convert complexity into clarity. In this interview, Luka shares his perspective on how these technologies are already influencing the industry, and what lies ahead. Europe is entering a new phase of digital expansion, with data centres becoming a cornerstone of this growth. The continued rise of AI, cloud computing and digital services is driving sustained increases in demand. Alongside this, data sovereignty policies and geopolitical factors are playing a growing role in shaping infrastructure decisions. At the same time, the industry is becoming more complex. Data centres are no longer developed in isolation—they are increasingly embedded within broader urban and energy systems. This shift requires tighter coordination across planning, permitting and energy integration. Sustainability and resilience are also moving higher up the agenda. There is a stronger focus on reducing environmental impact while ensuring robust and reliable operations over time. “Data centres will remain central to AI’s development and Europe’s digital and green transition, increasingly integrating with local energy systems,” says Claes Andersson, Division Manager Mission Critical at Sweco UK. “We also see a shift from traditional lower density cloud-based implementations to AI embedment, which is changing the way data centres are designed and constructed.” Read more in our latest article: https://lnkd.in/d8uX2cGh #SwecoGroup #TransformingSocietyTogether

#DGNB #Platin #Samarbejde #Resultater

Europe’s competitiveness will be defined not only by policy ambition, but by the ability to deliver. As the European leader in architecture and engineering consulting, Sweco contributes expertise to EU-level discussions on Europe’s competitiveness, resilience, the green transition and other topics. At ICC Sweden’s AGM & High-Level Seminar recently, Åsa Bergman joined EU Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, responsible for trade and economic security, in a discussion on “Balancing Trade, Security & Competitiveness.” She highlighted that Europe has made strong progress in shaping policy frameworks and mobilising investment, and the priority now is implementation at scale. Turning ambition into reality means strengthening energy systems, transport infrastructure, and industrial capacity to ensure resilient supply chains. Accelerating delivery of this will require: • access to engineering and technical expertise • streamlined and harmonised permitting • cross-border technical mobility • strengthened delivery capacity Closing the gap between policy and implementation will be decisive for Europe’s long-term competitiveness, resilience, and strategic autonomy. This is where Sweco contributes, with 23,000 experts delivering around 150,000 projects each year for approximately 39,000 clients across Europe.
