Directors Joe and Anthony Russo comment on rumors that Marvel Studios will announce a Secret Wars Avengers 5 movie at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. Ever since MCU's Iron Man's 2007 panel, the franchise's Hall H presentation has become one of the most anticipated parts of the event. After laying out its post-Infinity Saga plans in 2019, Marvel Studios skipped SDCC in the last few years as it moved to a virtual setting due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now, however, the MCU is confirmed to make its return with a full Hall H panel which is exciting.

Naturally, there are countless theories as to what can be expected from Marvel Studios' SDCC presentation. There are supposed announcements and sneak peeks for upcoming projects, such as Loki season 2, Agatha Harkness, Secret Invasion, and Ironheart. With only four films in its confirmed slate, however, there's particular interest in what the MCU movie schedule will be like for the next few years. That includes a culminating Avengers 5 film with a story like Secret Wars - which the Russos have been vocal about wanting to tackle.

When asked about the possibility of Marvel Studios announcing Secret Wars with them at the helm in SDCC during their recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the directors finally clarify the Avengers 5 rumors. Joe Russo initially debunks the idea that they are tied to the project, saying there are no conversations between them and Marvel Studios at this point. While they are open to working with them again, they are simply busy with AGBO Films. He then says that they're unaware if Secret Wars will indeed be announced at Comic-Con. Read his full answer below:

No. We’re not. You know, we haven’t had conversations with those guys about anything that they are up to because we’ve been intensely busy with our own schedule. We just always answer truthfully when we’re asked, 'Would you work with them?' Of course we would. We adore them. 'What would you like to do?' Secret Wars was our favorite series growing up, you know? And then I think it always gets turned into a bigger story. But to be clear, there is no story.

As Joe Russo says, they are interested in doing a Secret Wars MCU movie, and based on their previous comments about the matter, they seem to be well aware that it might be the franchise's next culminating event. The Russos have earned a lot of goodwill from Marvel Studios and its fans after sticking the landing with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, so the feeling is likely mutual regarding potentially returning to the MCU. However, It doesn't seem like the directing duo have an idea of what Marvel Studios has in store for fans at SDCC. For what it's worth, Kevin Feige and his team have been silent about their upcoming presentation, but the public can expect significant announcements.

In any case, Marvel Studios can get away with not announcing their next culminating event at SDCC 2022. The franchise is still in the early stages of rebuilding after the Infinity Saga; even Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame weren't officially announced until the end of Phase 2. So, it's possible that Marvel opts to focus on their Phase 5 endeavors, which include the Fantastic Four reboot and perhaps an X-Men project. If Secret Wars is indeed the plan for Avengers 5, they could wait to make an announcement and solidify their storytelling now instead.
