About Mary Kassel

Mary Kassel is a Senior Writer & Critic who joined the Screen Rant team in 2023.

After graduating from Emerson College with a degree in Media Arts Production, Kassel started at Screen Rant with a focus on the critical analysis side of movies and television while continuing to work on set in film production.

At Screen Rant, Kassel primarily writes for the Classic TV section, mining their encyclopedic knowledge of television history for content. However, they also contribute to the Books team and review both film and television as a critic.

Author Details

Kassel first fell in love with film thanks to the many fantasy and sci-fi TV shows they binged as a kid, and found that just consuming this media wasn’t enough. When they’re not working on their own projects or writing personal diatribes on Substack, Kassel makes good use of their AMC A-List subscription.

Industry Focus

Kassel began as a part-time Lists Writer for Screen Rant, eventually joining the team full-time and becoming a self-publisher. Not long after that, Kassel became a critic for Screen Rant, which has become one of their favorite parts of the job, and not just because it’s so fun to write a bad review.

Now that Kassel is primarily contributing to the Classic TV team, it’s given them a chance to engage with some of the best works in TV history. It’s easy to mine prestige shows like Mad Men or The Leftovers for critical analysis, but Kassel finds it just as natural to dissect the inner workings of The Vampire Diaries and The Summer I Turned Pretty.

Favorite Media

Choosing a favorite movie or TV show is a near-impossible task. However, Kassel can confidently say that they’ve watched and enjoyed everything from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Paris, Texas, and they recommend checking out their Letterboxd to learn more.

In their free time, Kassel can be found at small, local theaters watching restorations of the classics and new independent work. At home, Kassel will typically go for comfort viewings of Gilmore Girls or Howl’s Moving Castle.

While their first love will always be speculative fiction, Kassel firmly believes there’s something to love about every genre and that there’s no such thing as a guilty pleasure.
