Abstract: Key to predicting impacts of predation is understanding the mechanisms through which predators impact prey populations. “…Although we saw differences in cortisol concentrations between populations and increased cortisol concentrations when LPP females were exposed to predators in the short term, these results did not transfer into differences in female reproductive output. Our results reflect conclusions of another study in which predator presence did not influence reproductive output in another population of H. formosa (Mukherjee, Heithaus, Trexler, Ray‐Mukherjee, & Vaudo, ). We did see differences in the number and size of offspring and reproductive allocation of females between the two populations (the LPP produced larger and heavier offspring), but neither population responded differently to the treatment.…”
