Zircon U-Pb Geochronology Links the End-Triassic Extinction with the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province

Abstract: The end-Triassic extinction is characterized by major losses in both terrestrial and marine diversity, setting the stage for dinosaurs to dominate Earth for the next 136 million years. Despite the approximate coincidence between this extinction and flood basalt volcanism, existing geochronologic dates have insufficient resolution to confirm eruptive rates required to induce major climate perturbations. Here, we present new zircon uranium-lead (U-Pb) geochronologic constraints on the age and duration of flood b… Show more

“…Robust biotic recovery, which initially occurred in the form of bio-siliceous deposition 36 , did not begin until Hg concentrations returned to pre-extinction levels and Hg-MIF re-appeared, indicating the cessation of major CAMP volcanism. This inferred timing of recovery contrasts with previous suggestions 3 that the recovery was underway as CAMP was still erupting.…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…Sample NJ1 from the well‐studied Palisades sill located in New Jersey yielded in situ apatite U‐Pb bulk and 3‐s integrated Tera‐Wasserburg intercept dates of 201.4 ± 8.3 Ma and 201.0 ± 6.0 Ma, respectively. These new in situ apatite U‐Pb age determinations are consistent with previous plagioclase and biotite 40 Ar/ 39 Ar and zircon U‐Pb age determinations of the Palisades sill of ∼203–195 Ma and 201.520 ± 0.034 Ma, respectively (Blackburn et al., 2013; Marzoli et al., 2011). The concurrence of these ages further confirms that in situ apatite U‐Pb geochronology is a robust tool to determine the crystallization ages of mafic to intermediate rocks (Figure 1 and Table 1).…”
