Music at Dusk

Round Mountain

Date: Thursday, June 25, 2026
Time: Gates open at 6 p.m. Music at 7 p.m.
Venue: Michael F. Brown Plaza, SAR

This summer, the heart of the SAR campus turns into an outdoor cocktail lounge and live music venue for Music at Dusk. On two special evenings, guests are invited to relax in a beautiful outdoor setting, stroll the grounds, and experience live traditional New Mexican music.

Round Mountain
This is original world folk music with strong influences and instruments from traditional global traditions. West African kora and Irish bouzouki are played along with guitar, accordion, and a dobro strung to be played clawhammer-style, elevated by upright bass. Round Mountain's music most specifically references traditional music from West Africa and Appalachia, New Orleans, Ireland, the Balkans and Turkey, yet is anchored in a connection to the land and culture of their native New Mexico.

Round Mountain, as a band, rises as a metaphor for the historical perspective that we as a culture have at this time in accessing music and life knowledge from many traditions. We feel that living in a place of strong tradition enhances our desire to both live fully in that place and to see a long way in all directions. In 2002, Santa Fe brothers Robby and Char Rothschild met bassist Jon Gagan. In addition to sharing a background of growing up in Northern New Mexico, we found a deep commonality in our love of global traditional music. Robby has traveled to Mali and studied West African music, and Char has been working with Roma teachers on trumpet and accordion since meeting Zahir Ramadanov of Ansembl Teodosievski in Mendocino in 1998. Among their other projects, Robby and Jon perform with Ottmar Liebert, and Char performs in the Balkan brass band Korvin Orkestar.
