Ugandan Coffee Growers Shrug Off Drought Thanks to Regenerative Agriculture

Among the rolling hills of Uganda’s Masaka region, robusta coffee plants are producing larger, tastier yields thanks to a pilot program utilizing regenerative agriculture to battle droughts or erratic rainfall.

A catch-all term for a variety of growing techniques as simple as mulching to as complex as cover cropping, regenerative agriculture is especially useful in the coffee belts where nutrient-poor tropical soils and heavy rainfall make erosion a real threat to productive crops
.

Of course regenerative farming works. Nature knows how to compensate for common problems. Humans just need to quick fucking up those processes.

Still need to do the bathroom and wash the sheets etc., but I've done the obvious stuff otherwise. I'll probably think of more to do tomorrow, of course, but at least it's started...

Anyway, now is time to shut down the desktop, but I don't think I can be bothered taking it apart tonight. Something to do in the morning, I guess!!

Other than that, just Vintage Story. I have started making my frog hole look nice! :D It's gonna be a long process though.

Today is partly cloudy and warm.

I fed the birds. I haven't seen much activity yet.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 7/10/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I've seen a few sparrows and house finches plus a male cardinal.

EDIT 7/10/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 7/10/26 -- I watered the new picnic table garden. I picked two more yellow pear tomatoes. The first sunflower in the septic garden is blooming -- medium height, medium-small single flower, yellow petals.

EDIT 7/10/26 -- I watered seedlings in the savanna.

EDIT 7/10/26 -- I watered plants in the house yard.

Let us begin with something that I think encapsulates the idea of "ha, ha, only serious": an explanation as to why so much of United States right-wing political discourse sounds the way it does: they're all enthusiasts of a specific form of inter-racial pornography that casts white men into the role of having their white women possessions have sex with black men, cuckolding them, and/or having themselves forcibly gender-transitioned into women and from there turned into caricatures of women such that they can also become the sexual targets of black men. Which sounds very weird, until you realize that enthusiasm leads them into believing in conspiracy theories and in throwing specific kinds of labels at their opponents to cast them as the white men of insufficient virility and manliness that they will be the ones cuckolded and gender-transitioned by black men, instead of properly conservative white men.

As children continue to be used as human shields for the forces of censorship to attack public libraries, and governments find less obviously-unconstitutional avenues to force censorship on public libraries, youth and teenagers are being routinely denied age-appropriate books on topics censors assert are categorically inappropriate for them. Queer people and sex are obviously atop the list, but so are books accurately describing the experiences of not-white people, either contemporarily or historically. There's one quibble I have, and that it's the 404 article devotes any space at all to not immediately dismissing the idea that books these days are more like social media posts and dumbed-down comparatively. The rest is solid, about the dangers of governments agreeing that children are the property of their parents, rather than independent beings with rights of their own toward access to information, and the high likelihood that items removed to age-inappropriate places will not circulate and be weeded and not bought. Age-appropriate treatments of material make conversations easier, not harder, unless your idea of "when to have the conversation" is "never," and if that's the case, then good luck, sucker. Children and teenagers are infinitely resourceful and treat censorship as something to be routed around wherever possible.

Of course, it doesn't help when the touted paper of record completely changed the way it covered trans people after ownership changes and pressure from governments, making it a much more hostile paper than it had been.

Daveigh Chase, known to most people in the United States as the English voice of Ogino Chihiro in Spirited Away or Lilo Pelekai in the animated movie Lilo & Stitch, died from complications of meningitis and sepsis, at 35 years of age. Which is a tragedy all by itself, because it breaks the great sage's blessing.

The composer of the soundtrack for the original DOOM game, Bobby Price, has died at 81 years of age, and there are probably a lot of people who played E1M1 in his honor. Prince was also responsible for the soundtracks to games like Wolfenstein 3D, Rise of the Triad, Duke Nukem 3D, and the Commander Keen games, so I have definitely heard a lot of his work and enjoyed it greatly.

And More… )

Last out, The quest for the franchise for women started early and strong in the history of the United Kingdom. Organizations to destigmatize and otherwise try to get the constitutional rights for people we now think of as LGBTQ+ have been around since the 1920s in the United States, if not earlier. (And were treated as one might expect them to be in a repressed and homophobic society that still intended to enforce the Comstock Act.)

And the time-defying tricks of typing, the educated guesses needed for clicking and dragging, and the ways that interfaces can be smartly defined to make the process of computing typing, clicking, and dragging work in ways that feel natural, easy, and most importantly, that don't crunch when the user is trying to do something the computer hasn't completely caught up to yet, which pairs extremely well with a history, with examples, of how browsers and programs need to be able to render language that uses Arabic letters correctly, the programs, engines, and specifications built to do exactly that, and two outstanding problems with solutions and specifications drawn up that have yet to be implemented. Because, at its core, Arabic is both calligraphic and justified when written, and a computer needs to make decisions that scribes and calligraphers would be able to make through long practice and by knowing the shape of what they were writing.

An artificial cell with a full lifecycle has been created for the first time

SpudCell can feed, divide, and even outcompete its siblings. It's not truly alive, its creator tells us, but it could still transform the bioengineering world.

That does actually meet my criteria for life, specifically because it can reproduce its genetic code and evolve. Also, that is the point where you should not be doing this experiment on a planet with a biosphere. You do those in space or a heavenly body without life on it. Just in case there is a containment breach or hazardous development, you don't want to risk anything dangerous getting loose.

Scientists Have Found Climate-Resistant Coral Reefs Around the World Totaling the Size of Wisconsin

A sophisticated AI-powered examination of coral reef resistance extrapolated into the future found that there’re about 64,000 square miles of coral reefs on Earth that could still be resisting climate change by 2050.

The common theory states that CO2 emissions create a greenhouse effect which warms the seas which causes coral reefs to bleach or even die, yet there are environments—as GNN has frequently reported—where corals seem to be more resilient.

It would be nice if Earth didn't have to reinvent reefs again, and could keep this version.

It was nice and sunny today!!

Scout and I were out for almost two hours, until the sun stopped coming into the yard enough to bask in! :3 We both had a good time - I know Scout did because there were BIRDS, and also she didn't even try and go out of bounds! :D But mainly the birds. She luv birb, wants to eat one very much. Alas, even city pigeons are too smart for her!

Other than that, mostly Vintage Story, though I did also make rice (I'm love rice so much I swear...) and used the time it was cooking to start cleaning up around here. Almost time to go home!!! :O So yeah, cleaning up after myself, is important! And polite! Thankfully I haven't really made much mess - kitchen is cleaned up whenever I cook, and other than taking the desktop apart again for travelling (which WILL be a PITA, I'm not gonna lie, but I'm also not going to do it until the morning of) it's just stuff like the floors. And the bathroom of course but I won't do that until the morning of either, because I do gots to still be cleaning my teeth and stuff!

Might totally change Scout's litter tomorrow, too, that's definitely a thing that needs doing before I go as well...

EDIT 7/9/26 -- We went up to Champaign-Urbana today.  There were so many flocks of geese and nearly-adult goslings!  :D  Some of them were mixed ages, like one much younger gosling among older ones.  I think the rough breeding season made some families merge.  We also saw a murder of crows in one parking lot.  I cawed at them and they all turned their heads to stare at me.  At twilight, I think I saw a nightjar flying overhead, or more precisely, I heard the "peent, peent" call they make and looked up and spotted a bird.

I am done for the night.

“IMPOSSIBLE!” No Work Food Gardens Based on Wild Edible Ecosystems

About 20 years ago, after I first started studying Permaculture, I went to work for a very sustainable Permaculture-oriented CSA farm. One day, after working all morning painfully tending, pruning, and weeding a patch of cane berries, I went for a bike ride along my favorite trail. Black raspberries were in season, so I went home, grabbed 3 3 gallon buckets and filled them up with raspberries.

That was when it hit me. NOBODY was working tending these, except for perhaps the deer and birds fertilizing them. Meanwhile, my own hands were covered with scratches from my morning work
.

This is an example of humanity's earliest agriculture: encouraging plants we find useful in places where we go, and occasionally ripping out ones we don't want there. Wild plants can mostly take care of themselves. You don't have to fuss over them like delicate domestic fruits and vegetables.

My approach to laissez-faire permaculture is similar. I plant new things that seem promising. I try to help them establish. They live or die. The ones that live, I expect to take care of themselves. Some of what I grow is really good at that. \o/

"Plural Checklist" by leathersys on tumblr -- copied on DW by [personal profile] synecdoches

I recently found an interesting survey on Tumblr by leathersys, called the Plural Checklist. They made this as a quiz for people who think they may be plural/multiple, but don't have classic amnesiac barriers, since a lot of quizzes and diagnostic tests are geared toward the most obvious dissociative symptoms. I like the questions, but I strongly dislike Google and don't want to send this info to a stranger, so I'm going to copy the questions here and consider my answers. Most of the questions were very insightful-- some shockingly so-- and only one or two of them made me feel like an out of touch old man.

Today's word is "doff."  Many folks will know it from "doff a hat" meaning to tip or take off.  However, it's also used widely in fibercrafting to mean removing fiber from a tool.

Pop Culture Squad has a post about current Batman threads. In one of those, Oliver Queen / Green Arrow explains to Bruce Wayne / Batman what is wrong with the tech industry nowadays:

Ollie has a turn as the crusading liberal ex-millionaire, as he has a few opportunities to let us all know what he really thinks of Generative AI companies founded by tech bros. There’s one point where Ollie fills Batman in on it all. "They’re another generative AI company. Scraping personal data. Stealing art and stories and knowledge. Polluting and poisoning. Using masses of energy and water. Taking what the world actually needs to produce what nobody wants."

It's that last line I want people to remember and use to describe what is wrong with generative AI: "Taking what the world actually needs to produce what nobody wants." That's it in a nutshell.

Edinburgh has been good so far! Our hotel is lovely, the food is good, and it has an elevator and working a/c, yay!

My pain levels with my back and hips fluctuate, and sometimes for no discernible reason. BUT! One of the things we were wondering about appears to be true: I’m far less inflamed and in general background pain, and it’s almost certainly due to the food. This is something I’ve read a lot about; people with some sort of chronic pain issue finding it eases up when they’re eating outside of the US. Hell, it turns out that the bun of the breakfast sandwich I’ve eaten for the past three days has traces of corn in it, and I’ve had no reactions. And I’m less bloated. That’s it, moving to the UK to live off salads, black pudding, and scones with clotted cream.

As is traditional, I went to Marks & Spencers and bought a lot of underthings. I may hit another M&S to buy additional bras, because the two I got are fantastic.

Proof that I can go out in the sun and not immediately die!

Today was a Long Day. I woke up before my alarm, even! At like. 9am. Gross. But also it meant I had plenty of time to have a shower and get my hair mostly dry before I went out, which is yay!

Less yay: I was cold while out because all of my hoodies were either dirty. Or wet. Because I just washed them. WHOOPS. Should've done that washing a bit earlier... >>;; Still, wasn't TOO bad in just a t-shirt and a long sleeved top, but also I hate being cold booo.

Also there were fucking bus replacements and those are always super annoying!!!! But seeing A was great, and that's the important thing. :D Yes. (There were also soooo many people around because school holidays, which is. A thing. Bleh, crowds.)

Um. Other than that, mostly Vintage Story. I wrote a freaking todo, because of course I did. Also Scout remains very very cute! And I am rambly as fuck soooo yet another point in the 'go the fuck to sleep' column I will. Attempt to do that now. Again. You know how it goes...

EDIT 7/8/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 7/8/26 -- We started breaking up the parts of the birdgift tree that had fallen into the south lot. There's about twice as much mow path past it now. We dumped 2 wheelbarrows of sticks into the firepit in the ritual meadow.

EDIT 7/8/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 7/8/26 -- I cracked open 2 apricot pits and got 2 big perfect seeds. I cracked open two batches of cherry pits and got several good seeds. I think the advice to let seeds air-dry for a few days is bad. One day at most. They shrivel up pretty fast.

I walked around for a bit. I saw 2 bats flying quite low in the house yard, and more flying high over the road and other places. I'm not sure if they're the same bats or not. I don't know how many I actually have.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.
