Kenshin eyed the cat on his bed. She was sleeping peacefully now but he wasn’t convinced that whatever had swatted her had passed. It had gone as soon as it had come and in the world of magic that was never a good thing. Most curses worked slowly but efficiently. They crawled deep inside the individual and began to expand with each passing day until one day there was no room and it would implode. The bodies were usually very hard to piece together again after that.

Everyone was terrified of curses and they had been banned from Japan, and with good reason. Well in the past curses were handled by few people and those were taught and trained to be honorable. Usually they were confidents of people in power and they would use their knowledge and abilities to preserve peace through the lands. However, when the honor declined in politics it also faded from the witches.

Chaos was brought upon the lands. Commoners paid and begged witches for their curses. They used them to teach minor lessons: unfaithfulness, untruthfulness, anger, sorrow and hatred. Sadly, this was not the way to do things. Curses were fickle and hard to tame, on occasions they would revert to the caster or the people paying for the job. Often times they would implode and eradicated towns to the bone. It was not a pretty sight.

After that dark Era, some politicians, who had their heads in their rightful place began a hunt for witches. They trapped many, kidnapped many and slaughtered even more. No one was proud of what happened at that rebellious time in Japan but no one could come to regret it either. The hard hand managed to squelch down the indiscriminate use of curses and a century later, it had vanished completely.

They led the world to believe magic was a myth and so they had. Not many believed in the darkest arts and the few who did had their share with the occasional hand reader and botanist.  It was enough for those born without magic to satiate the space inside them reserved for it.

Kenshin himself was the son of a witch and an elemental. An unlikely pair but strong in their unique way none the less. He never got to know his parent in real life for they lost their lives in the midst of a rebellion. He often hears praised of them and their fierce protection of him though.

Hiko took him under his tutelage since he was four years old and taught him to channel his powers. It took a while for Kenshin had inherited his mother’s huge spirit energy but he had inherited his father’s smaller and fluctuant reservoirs. As a child he would always lose control for his power couldn’t be contained on his body. It was always spilling all around him. That was the reason fairies often swirled around him as a child. They were mostly power-hungry beings who liked to wander close to the strongest witch—or kid-- around.

After months he learned to divide his spirit energy. He began to use items to store it safely. Hiko taught him how and provided a space where he could store and take them any time he needed. Hiko warded the basement of his personal house and created a link that connected it to his mental barrier. Only those allowed to trespass could acquire the item and of course, they needed to ask permission in order to enter Hiko’s mental domain. It was the safest place since Hiko was the strongest mage in the area.

While Kenshin’s power was bigger it was also untamable. He was not a witch and as such he couldn’t bend the magic to his will as easily as pure witches could. In his case he had to ask permission and to plead a little, but more often than not everything would work out fine. From his father he earned the power to bend only water and fire to his will. Those were easier to deal with, there was no need to ask for they accepted and submitted to him fully. Nature was, by default, a very kind and subtle domain in magic.

Kenshin sighed and turned to the black furred cat. It continued to doze off, but his golden eyes knew there was something else happening underneath everything else. Her aura was leaking, creating an endless river…and it went out of the window and went on floating through the dark sky and falling rain. Many times he had wondered now where would it take him if he were to follow it…but once again he was reminded that he would have to leave the Miss’s side. Still, what if this explained the complex of spells she had? What if it was a curse and would implode at any time now?

Kenshin shook his head and waited some more. He needed to think a little bit more before taking any drastic action. He was a magician, and he knew magic was not something to play with.
