Winter Timber Harvest in a Changing Environment: A Rooted in Research Webinar Series
These webinars support the recently published General Technical Report, Climate Change Considerations for Forest Operations in Northern Forests
Schedule:
- January 15: Changes in Winter Conditions
- January 22: Soil Monitoring to Understand Operability and Impacts
- January 29: Planning for and Adapting to Changing Winters

Winter weather is becoming increasingly variable. In the Upper Midwest and Northeastern United States, where frozen conditions have been relied on to protect fragile ground from the impacts of timber harvests, changing winter weather alters the status quo and requires new ways of moving forward.
In this three-part webinar series, presented in collaboration with USDA Forest Service Eastern Region State, Private, and Tribal Forestry, the Northern Institute for Applied Climate Science (NIACS), and the Northeast and Northern Forest Climate Hubs, we explore changing winter conditions and their consequences for timber harvesting in the Northeast and Upper Midwest. Presentations by and discussions with scientists and natural resource professionals will explore the research behind changing winters, soil monitoring to inform operations, and adaptations to support winter timber harvests in a changing environment.
This webinar series is presented in collaboration with USDA Forest Service Eastern Region State, Private, and Tribal Forestry, the Northern Institute for Applied Climate Science (NIACS), and the Northeast and Northern Forest Climate Hubs.
Each one-hour webinar will consist of presentations or panel discussions followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

Webinars are eligible for 1 continuing education credit each through the Society of American Foresters, The Wildlife Society, and the International Society of Arboriculture. Please note that continuing education credits are only awarded to participants who attend the live webinar.
