Baby Monkey Puppy Grows Up
Oh my! Baby J figured out how to go up stairs about a week ago. I found out, because Julian was hanging out with Eli in the front room, which is usually blocked off by the baby gate because that's where the staircase to upstairs is. I heard a rumble-bumble-thump-cry kind of sound, and hurried in. Eli informed me, "Julian went up the stairs, but then he just fell down!" Fortunately, the stairs are carpeted and Julian recovered from his scare quickly. He's practised a lot, but he still needs spotting, or he is likely to "sit down" off the edge of the step and fall, or pause to clap and cheer for himself and tumble down the stairs. Like anyone with a new tool, he is drawn more than ever to stairs, so I have to stay aware, keep the baby gate shut, etc.
Well, I goofed. Today Eli's friend Q is here for the day, and both of them were upstairs building train tracks in the boys' bedroom. Julian must have heard them, and before a few minutes had passed, Eli was thundering down the stairs and yelling, "Julian came upstairs all by himself!" Oh dear. Chalk me up a point in the negligent mother column. Luckily, he managed just fine. Not too surprising given that he his, after all, one of the clones ... but still! He does have some awareness of the danger of stairs. He calls for help even to navigate down the single step between our kitchen and living room. I'll be glad to have him be safe and reliable on stairs sometime soon, but just now I latched the baby gate just in case.
On a related by different topic, Baby J is one slooooow crawler. My mom noticed that he doesn't "trot" yet but instead has a four-beat gait.
