Sexual dysfunction in female patients includes genitopelvic pain/penetration disorder, orgasmic disorder, and sexual interest/arousal disorder. These types of female sexual dysfunction have the potential to impair and disrupt intimate relationships, cause psychological distress, and reduce satisfaction. Factors including mode of birth, female genital mutilation, and a range of comorbidities can affect female sexual dysfunction. Many patients lack the comfort or language to openly engage with clinicians about this problem, and research indicates that more than half of patients experiencing female sexual dysfunction do not seek professional help for many reasons, including embarrassment, guilt, and fear. The healthcare provider should help establish a healthy, culturally respectful dialogue; negotiate safe and reasonable goals; educate the patient about things like anatomic structure and function; and identify potential solutions.
