Sorry but Benedict Cumberbatch is totally amazing and Star Trek is a dumb action franchise now, so what's the big deal? We don't even know the new backstory for Khan, and the first film already destroyed pre-existing continuity. All this outrage when the film isn't even out yet is silly. It's not even close to a Akira or Avatar whitewash. Also, Cumberbatch! He could've played Ip Man in the Wong Kar-Wai biopic and I wouldn't have complained (maybe). Just dub the Chinese in post. CUMBERBATCH4EVER

The “big deal” is:

  • That Star Trek, a franchise known for it’s progressiveness, has regressed in casting and representation to the standards from the 1960s.  Khan was a character of color.  Regardless of how Star Trek decided to cast this character ~fifty years ago, using the racist casting practices of yesteryears, there is no valid, non-discriminatory reason for the franchise to regress to that now.
  • That aside from Faran Tahir’s brief role in the first five minutes of Trek09, there are no prominent South Asian characters in this franchise, so when a character is named Khan Noonien Singh you’d hope they would be able to find an actor of South Asian descent out of all of the ones that are out there.
  • That it’s Paramount again, not feeling like they need to learn anything from whitewashing incidents like “The Last Airbender.”
  • That Benedict Cumberbatch is a white man with British and Hollywood crossover appeal; he has access to countless roles that are blocked off actors of color– including hundreds of Star Trek characters…and this just happens to be one of the most prominent characters of color at all in science fiction.  If they won’t even cast people of color for iconic bad guys…
  • That the Cumberbatchness of Benedict Cumberbatch somehow outweighs the importance of calling out discrimination.  But that’s not “silly,” to you, nah, the people who are upset about racism are the silly ones.  

That’s why this is a big deal.

If Marvel Studios was a restaurant group that opened various restaurants

and they started opening a bunch of different Asian fusion cuisine/Asian-inspired restaurants.

They’ve seen success in the other restaurants they’ve opened.   Every single restaurant they’ve funded so far has been headed by a white male executive chef.   

(Scuttlebutt has it eventually there will be a Wakandan restaurant opening at some point.   There’s been some black pastry chefs who have been featured in their existing restaurants.  There’s also a famous chef who is a woman who has worked as a sous chef in the two Avengers Restaurants, and the Captain American Restaurant and Iron Man Restaurant, but she hasn’t been given a chance to open her own restaurant as of yet.*)

More recently, they’ve opened restaurants for white chefs who went to Asia and learned how to master making xiaolongbao or omakase and other specialties…with some Asian American cooks and dishwashers in the back.  

And then people pointed out, “You know what, the way they’re funding these restaurants is messed up. When it is an Asian cuisine-inspired restaurant, they only ever seem to to fund them when the chef is white. This new restaurant concept and branding is part of a systemic problem and doesn’t sit well with me. I am critiquing the concept and the branding and their bias for only sponsoring white chefs, even when the cuisine is from Asia.”

And you’re like, “Oh, but you have to wait until the restaurant is open and eat every single dish at the restaurant before you can critique it at all.”

People are critiquing the concept of the restaurant, the branding, and the focus on chef Finn Jones, who by all accounts is not that great of a chef (or great at promoting his restaurant.) Not the food.

*She wasn’t having any luck getting Marvel Restaurant Group to give her her own restaurant, so she went to Dreamworks Restaurant Group and started her own robot-themed sushi restaurant inspired by a restaurant from Japan.  This restaurant will be opening later this month.   When people pointed out that Dreamworks Restaurant Group also only seems to also sponsor white chefs in their chain, will they ever given Asian chefs a chance, etc…. fans defended the decision saying things like “well, yanno, shellfish sushi is racially ambiguous” and “this sushi is made by robots, so it has no ethnicity” and “when I look at photos of the restaurant from Japan I really can’t tell that the sushi was meant to be Japanese.”

As I told people in a movie group, it’s honestly pointless to try and name Japanese or East Asian actors who could “qualify” based on this shitty excuse, because there are way more than just a handful. Please send in fancasts if you want! But I’m just saying, it makes me uncomfortable when we start ticking off names as a sort of counter argument because it implies there’s only a handful when the point we need to be proving is there are too many talented Asian-Americans who could have been in this production to list and if they wanted to cast Asians as the leads in this movie they would have cast Asians as the leads in this movie.
