Stargate Atlantis Recs - Gen (9 Recs), Sheppard/Ronon (6 Recs)

So I'm ringing in the new year battling illness, so I decided to put together some of my Stargate Atlantis faves. While I like Sheppard/McKay (nowhere near as much as iamtheenemy though), I love the general fic and the Sheppard/Ronon the most. So that's what I'm reccing for you tonight.

Happy New Year, y'all. Enjoy the recs!

Stargate Atlantis – Sheppard Gen Fics (9 Recs)

1. Without a Doubt by miera_c - Sheppard & Weir friendship - Set after Elizabeth goes to bat for Sheppard as military leader of Atlantis, the two of them reach an understanding about their mutual trust and loyalty. I love the look at the characters and their dynamic from their own points of view. Interesting read. "You're the military leader of the expedition," Elizabeth said, pulling him back from looking up at the mountains just barely visible through the snow. "You're a leader, John. The people in the city follow you, military and civilian both. You've earned their trust. You earned the right to keep your position and the rank that went with it."

2. Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast by anthropomorfic - Sheppard Gen - It's fascinating, funny, and a little unsettling. Beautifully written as the audience gets different glimpses at John and various possibilities in the SGA universe. Go read and leave feedback! If the city was sentient, he always imagined she - Atlantis is always female, in his head - would be a lot like his mother. She'd want her people to be happy, she'd be fiercely protective of them, and she'd have a great sense of humor.

3. Fire On The Mountain by loligo - Sheppard Gen - Sheppard deals with his mother’s death. It’s a great look at the character of John Sheppard. He’s upset, but maintains his sarcastic nature throughout. Best part though – I think you find out where he got his sense of humor. Wonderfully written, poignant, and amusing. He couldn't help laughing, maybe a little bitterly, because really, he'd been an asshole a lot in high school. He lifted her hand and gently rested his cheek against the back of it. "Ma, I don't think that 'not actually calling your mother a whore' counts as much of a positive accomplishment. Like, 'Oh, my son cured polio!' 'Really? Mine brokered a Middle East peace agreement!' -- "

4. Nine Things John Has Loved and Lost… by nifra_idril - Sheppard Gen with slight Sheppard/McKay at the end - It's bloody brilliant. Broken down into nine little vignettes of people that have mattered to John Sheppard, it gives more depth to our favorite SGA soldier. Also, the footnotes are wonderful little additions and really make the story all the more worthwhile, so turn off your pop-up blocker and enjoy. When John closed his eyes, he could see the airfield, all the pretty birds lined up in a row. His choppers, the tarmac below them, his men milling around them in the too-bright sunlight. He could see his guys, bleeding out. Sand turning into brick red clumps beside them. He swallowed hard, and it still felt like there was sand between his teeth.

5. Refraction by ltlj - Sheppard Gen - This story is centered around the discovery of a Quantum Mirror. Lotsa plot, adventure, and, of course, wonderful characterization. The Sheppard in this story has all the things I love about him on the show. John bit his lip, pretending to think about it. Add this to the list of things I never expected to have to deal with in the Pegasus Galaxy. Two copies of the same person couldn't live for long in one universe; if she wanted to keep John, she would have to kill the duplicate. If that's enough to make him turn on her.... The other Sheppard just rolled his eyes and looked bored. Or not. John said, "Sorry, I already have a job. But thanks for the offer, it was really special."

6. Windswept by cofax7 - Sheppard Gen - Set in the early part of season one, as the team tries to learn all about Atlantis, John uses some down time to go for a walk. I love the Sheppard voice in this piece – how he’s not sure to react to no incidents for him to handle – and it’s a nice, light piece that still manages to ring true. Twenty-seven hours without an emergency, and he was bored. John suspects this isn't a good sign. A little exercise is good, though. Most of the planets they've been to lately have been pretty flat, topography wise, and the gym, such as it is, doesn't have a stairmaster. Which means his glutes and his quads are beginning to ache as he climbs. If there were someone around who asked, he'd say that was the point. But really it's not.

7. Gently To Sleep by slodwick - Sheppard Gen - It’s not a long story, but it packs a powerful punch in what is provided. The writing is perfect and agonizing and sets the scene in a very vivid way. Soon it would be dark, and cold. He clenched his empty hands into fists, blinking into the dying light, waiting for something to happen, to force him to turn around.

8. A Place to Hide by lyndac - Sheppard Gen – It’s a torture fic where the reader sees Sheppard’s determination and trust in his team to find him as well as the slow mental deterioration that such torture could cause. It’s painful and wonderful all at the same time. John clenches his jaw and grits his teeth because he knows what comes next. Pain. Some kind of pain. It's always some kind of pain. As soon as the metal band touches his forehead, he knows what comes next.

9. A Brief History of Friendship by cupidsbow - Sheppard Gen – Dude, this story is a painful and intriguing look at John’s life. There was no casual yell of "Sorry" in the wake of the attack, so John decided to take it personally. After all, it was bad enough that his parents had dumped him in hell for the summer, without having to deal with hazing bullshit too.

Stargate Atlantis – Sheppard/Ronon (6 Recs)

1. The Revelation Series by thisisbone - Sheppard/Ronon – Because there can be no Sheppard/Ronon recs that does not feature this series of stories. It would be wrong. God, these stories kill me with the hot and angst and wonderful characterizations. This is a writer that gets the potential of Sheppard and Ronon. Ronon hasn't had much practice with talk, the nuances of social niceties, and he doesn't like feeling off balance. He considers reaching across the table and feeding Sheppard with his fingers, just to see if he can shake him up a little. Then Sheppard pulls the big gun, the real reason he's sitting there making nice: Sheppard wants him.

2. Home From the Sea by corinna_5 - Ronon with slight Sheppard/Ronon – A look into Ronon’s head during those first days on Atlantis. I love the Ronon POV here – seems very on the mark, wariness and wonderment after years on the run. Really, I should warn, I’m just a sucker for Ronon fic. Ronon has too much experience with the Wraith's mind games to want to be part of anyone else's, even the Ancestors. And so he continues to practice his mental disciplines, controlling his thoughts that the city might not know what was truly in his heart.

3. Friendly Competition by yavannauk - Sheppard/Ronon - Okay, yes it was written for me, but that doesn’t make it any less hot and wonderful. And seriously, Sheppard/Ronon is all about the explosive hotness…this delivers with snark and a Ronon who takes control. It quickly became apparent that John had no chance of catching Ronon. He was fast and lighter on his feet than his size would have suggested. By the time John reached the transporter, Ronon was leaning casually against the wall, waiting for him. He'd barely broken a sweat. John, on the other hand, was out of breath and his T-shirt was damp where it stuck to his skin.

4. Still by rageprufrock - Sheppard/Ronon – I love this story. It’s sweet without being saccharine as Ronon poses a question to Sheppard with a gift. The best part of this story is the Ronon voice, the small bits of who he probably was before years of being on the run hardened him. That's the thing about Atlantis that amazes Ronon the most--that none of them share any frames of reference. That they all look at things with different histories and understandings--different constellations, but what's most remarkable of all is the insatiable desire to learn about it, to take it in.

5. Sensual Deprivation by mirabile_dictu - Sheppard/Ronon – I think my favorite thing about this story (aside from the hotness) is the Ronon voice and his take on the other members of his team. It’s brilliance. Sheppard smells like human male, and he sounds like quiet tension, and he feels like keep away, and he looks like he would have been trouble in Ronon's old regiment, but the good kind of trouble, the kind of trouble Ronon hunted.

6. Untitled – Ronon POV (Part I) by janne_d - Sheppard/Ronon – Don’t worry, the link to the second part (Sheppard POV) is linked at the bottom of the first part. It’s just hot porn. Sometimes that’s all I really need so long as it’s well written. And this is written well with spot-on character voices. Ronon hated it, hated the wariness that Sheppard couldn’t hide from him, hated that he couldn’t remember what he’d done to cause it and that he couldn’t make amends and ease it until Sheppard told him.
