Yuletide Set # 1 - 16 Recs

Okay, like last year, there is a chance that iamtheenemy and I will overlap as we find it's just easier to do our own rec lists for yuletide and go with that. So we apologize ahead of time for any repeats.

This is only the first set. Good God, I'm not even through "B" yet. I fear I won't be done by the time next year's haul shows up.

Yuletide - Set # 1(16 Recs)

1. Meeting the Cullens - Twilight, Alice/Jasper [R] - It was one of the yuletide fics written for me and it's amazing. I love the Alice/Jasper in this, but even more, I love the various reactions but the other family members as they meet Jasper. So good. I adore it. She'd been confident of Jasper's abilities from the moment she'd seen him in person. It was like looking at a match, waiting for someone to strike it and let it flare up. She thought back to what she'd told him about Carlisle two days before they'd arrived.

2. These Three Words Have Said It All - The Outsiders – Set during the book, it’s dual point of view for Soda and Pony. I love the voices in this and how much they miss each other. When I woke up one morning, Ponyboy was gone. I know he ran off before, but he never came back.

3. In Mercy, Whisper Low - 4400 - Jordan and Shawn have to talk and try to make peace. I loved the voices, but the best thing about this is the relationship between Jordan and Shawn. This had happened once before, and Jordan could remember it now, the blood and the screaming, and the betrayal most of all. This time was a dim hospital room, and Shawn wasn't begging him not to die.

4. If I Saw You In Heaven - Time Traveler’s Wife [G] - A lovely short piece set around Claire attempting to explain Henry’s death to three-year-old Alba. Bittersweet. "Where's my Daddy?" Alba was three before she asked the question, and Clare felt her heart sink, knowing it was time for an explanation she was nowhere ready to give.

5. A Most Political Animal - Brothers & Sisters, [PG-13] – This is a perfect conversation between Kevin and Robert when they meet for drinks. I adore the Kevin voice in this story. “Thank you again for what you did-tried to do,” the Senator says, as they're carrying Sarah's kids out to the car after one of the Walker three hour dinner parties. He smiles at Kevin likes he's auditioning for a part in a toothpaste commercial, all blinding white teeth, no sincerity.

6. Lead Me Not - Brothers & Sisters, Kevin/Jason [PG-13] – I love and adore this story. I love the Kevin characterization and the conversation between Kevin & Jason is just what I wanted from the show. Kevin's never been any good at resisting temptation. His family indulges in vices like they're Roman emperors reincarnated, running full tilt toward self-destruction as if there's a prize for whoever ruins their life first.

7. A Man’s God-Given Right - Brokeback Mountain, Jack/Ennis [PG] – A take on the end that spins out a happy ending. Jack doesn’t die and Ennis figures things out before it’s too late. It’s perfect and sweet. So when Ennis del Mar finally set himself to making a life with Jack Twist--when Jack showed him what was worth fighting for--there wasn't a power on Heaven or Earth that could keep Ennis from him.

8. The Song of Chaos - Blade [G] - Life as a God can be a little boring, or so Deacon Frost has realized. I love the Deacon voice in this...and I love how it ends. Oh, sure, it had been fun at first. Walking in daylight again, that was cool. Turning people with a touch, if he chose: hilarious. Especially if he did in daylight. The annihilation of his enemies, fulfillment of his hopes, etc; mayhem, destruction, enormous wealth, blah, blah, blah. Everything he'd ever wanted. It had gotten old surprisingly fast.

9. Small Victory - Blade Trinity [R] - A look at King as a vampire. I love his battle between his human and vampire side, the guilt and the hunger. Hannibal looked away from the mirror, glaring at the door as Danica's shrill voice broke the air. A soft growl passed his lips and he closed his eyes for only a moment. Shaking his head he opened his eyes and looked at himself in the mirror. Opening his mouth he ran his tongue over his fangs, and winced. He hated this. Hated it with such a passion it made him sick.

10. A Ticket Out - Blade Trinity [PG-13] - King can't stand his "unlife" as a vampire and Abigail offers to try to help him. I love King's snark and Abigail's reaction to King's behavior. After five years, King had pretty much stopped responding to Danica's threats and taunts. Once he had realized that there wasn't any way out of... what she had done to him, he hadn't really cared to give her the pleasure of his rants and raves against the injustice of life, or unlife, in this case.

11. Something In the Way of Things - Blade Trinity [PG] - Abigail hunts down someone from her father's past to help Hannibal. Interesting Abigail voice and I like how the story brings it back to the first movie. The second time Abigail Whistler sets eyes on Dr. Karen Jenson, it's raining. The downpour has tapered down to a drizzle, leaving behind thick and humid air that clings to her bare arms and neck. Abby sighs heavily, shifting from one foot to the other and presses her back more firmly against the wall.

12. Decisions - Boondock Saints [PG] – Set in the aftermath of the movie, Connor tries to come to terms with everything and holds onto Murphy. I loved Connor’s worries, frustrations, and need to hang onto his brother. There is something dangerous about him, but he also fits into their lives with alarming ease, so easily Connor wants to halt it. He's been father and brother and guardian to Murphy so long that he's unwilling to relinquish even a part of it.

13. After the Storm - Boondock Saints, Connor/Murphy [PG-13] - A nice coda to the scene where Murphy is nearly taken out by the Russians. Short, but perfect. Connor has been going on what must have been the world's biggest adrenaline kick, and doing things, rather than thinking them through, but now, with Murphy safely tucked under him on the bed, he allows it to sink in.

14. Wanderlust - Boondock Saints [R] – Connor and Murphy make their way to America. I love Connor’s fear of flying, but how he forces himself to deal with it because of his love for his brother. It’s just wonderful. And the thing was - Christ. The thing was, Connor loved his brother. And he knew that Murphy loved him. And Connor knew that if he were to say that no, they shouldn't go to America because it was a scary fucking place and Connor had just been joking when he said he wanted to leave, then yes, Murphy would turn and walk away from that airport and never look back; he would never question Connor's choice.

15. Saint’s Progress - Boondock Saints [PG-13] – Connor’s point of view throughout the movie. I loved the insight into Connor’s character. Great piece. He doesn't know where the strength comes from. Maybe it's adrenaline filling his veins like quicksilver, maybe it's God aiding his servant. Maybe it's the Virgin Mary, who for all her meekness isn't above a right good fight. He doesn't care. The only thing he cares about is getting Murphy back.

16. 15 Minutes From Hell - Boondock Saints, Connor/Murphy [R] – Murphy worries if he’s on the wrong path, but he worries more about losing Connor. I loved the Murphy characterization and just how much he loves his brother. Sometimes Murphy feels like he's fifteen minutes from hell. Fifteen minutes and one confession away and that's not a comfortable place for him to be, no how no way. It's not where they're supposed to be, either of them.
