Supernatural (16 Recs)

1. Peace in Our Time by poisontaster - Sam/Dean – It’s happy, fluffy fic! Sam and Dean get to have a moment to themselves, a day of vacation. Mostly I love how Sam does the very small, subtle things to give something to Dean. So wonderful. His feet feel halfway to frozen and he squints into the sun to look back at Dean, sitting small and oddly forlorn in the sand.

2. Desperately In Need of a Hobby by apocalypsos - Dean develops an interesting hobby during the month of November and takes to writing and spending lots of time on his laptop. And the outcome? Sam thinking his brother’s insane and lots of porn. It’s awesome and wonderful and should be read! It's after the hunt in Montana when Dean starts acting really fucking weird.

3. Babyverse Fic by estrella30 – Dude, this is just the cutest, most wonderful thing ever. Sam and dean find a baby in the middle of the woods after Sam has a vision. Read this for nothing more than the hotness that is Dean Winchester playing with a baby. Gah. Because it was. It was a fucking baby, and Jesus Christ, what the hell had his visions gotten them into this time?

4. Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell by dodger_winslow - pre-series – Dean asks John Winchester a terrible question that ends up upsetting both Dean and John, leaving ten-year-old Sammy to be the voice of reason. God, this fic is really good. I love the John voice here. I love the characterization of John as a father who has to be tough on his boys in his mind, but still loves them so damn much. Warning: the last scene of this story packs a freaking punch. "If we got in a wreck, and Sammy and I were both unconscious, and the Impala caught on fire so you only had time to save one of us, who would you save?"

5. All the King’s Horses by lostt1 - Pre-Series to Pilot (Sam/Dean) – This story deals with one of those premises that I never tire of: the how Dean and Sam came to stop talking while he was away. Normally, I don’t read a whole lot of the pre-series wincest, but this one worked for the story. No, this room was nothing special. The only thing special here was lying on the bed, dead to the world.

6. Loyal Constituency by girlguidejones - first season (Sam/Dean) –It’s voting porn! Holy hell this is hot and manages to bring some fluffy goodness too. And Dean never ceases to amaze me, in fic or on the show. Sam snorts and just shakes his head, turning the newspaper page and leaning back, doing the commuter fold and sipping his beer as he speed-reads the next editorial recap for the county commissioner slot. Stealing a glance at Dean as he scans the online board of elections site at the same time, Sam once again wonders what Dean gets out of this.

7. Violent World of Our Fathers by likethesun2 - Post Shadows - Three parts with three different hunts. It’s Dean’s perspective and really says a lot about his character, but it’s also a great look at both Sam and John as well. Oh, and I love the part with Pastor Jim. Up till now, when Dad’s taken Dean along on a hunt, he’s made sure to leave Sammy someplace safe, the covers pulled up and the deadbolt slammed home, but tonight is different.

8. All This Present Tense by esorlehcar - Future Fic (Sam/Dean) – Dean has a surprise in store for Sam on his birthday. People, I love the schmoop, especially in this fandom because the canon is so full of angst. And this piece delivers so much sweetness I might have a cavity. Good stuff. "Hi," Sam breathes softly, rolling to position himself in Dean's arms, his back pressed against Dean's chest. Dean just snorts, but his hand is already snaking beneath Sam's t-shirt to move in slow, firm circles across his belly, and Sam feels a gentle kiss against his neck as he slides back into sleep.

9. SPN Coda to Everybody Loves a Clown by joyfulgirl41 - Post Everybody Loves a Clown - I have so missed her codas for episodes because they never cease to make me happy. And this one is hysterical. We all know that Dean would die to protect his brother, but it’s nice to see the older brother/tormentor side to him as well. So the clown thing was totally not Dean's fault. Not entirely. Not at first, anyway. Yeah, okay, so he's the one who told Sam that clowns were evil, but it was for a good cause.

10. And Now You Are and I Am Now And We’re a Mystery by oxoniensis - Supernatural, Post Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things - A nice little coda to the episode and really it’s the conversation I was picturing in my head after the episode ended. "There's nothing I could say," Sam continues, "because you wouldn't believe me."

11. Prayers to an Empty Room by lyra_wing - Post Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things - It’s a dark and creepy look at why Dean wouldn’t go near his mother’s grave in the episode. It really plays into all the things that Dean is going through and you want nothing more than to hug him and tell him it will be okay, even if that’s probably not the case. This happens a lot more often than you would think. Dean somehow attracts kids to him, like a modern-day pied piper. Sam doesn't know if it's because Dean is a big brother or what, but he doesn't even try and children seem to adore him.

12. Climbing Hand Over Hand to Get In by musesfool - Post Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things - This story is all sorts of hurty, but I think that’s a given considering where the episode ended. It’s from Sam’s perspective as he tries to deal with all the stuff that Dean shared with him, realizing that maybe it wasn’t as simple as getting Dean to open up as he thought going in. Not to mention, I love the way she writes the brothers’ relationship. He makes himself look at Dean instead of staring at his hand the way he wants to. When he was little, and hiding under the covers from the monsters under his bed, Dad used to say, Can't play peek-a-boo with your problems, Sammy. Doesn't make 'em go away. It's never not true, but sometimes he still has to force himself to look when all he wants is to look away.

13. Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things CODA by joyfulgirl41 - Post Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things - It’s heartbreaking and sad and there is no right answer that Sam can offer in the aftermath of the episode…but I think he does a pretty good job here. Loved it. It slices through Sam, sharp and burning and for a moment he's so overwhelmed by Dean's pain that he can't breathe.

14. Looking For What You Knew by brynnmck - Post Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things - Sam’s perspective in the aftermath of Dean’s big reveal…Sam trying to make sense of it, but really, it’s more about Sam trying to get Dean to see how important he is without uttering those words. And I love the ways they rediscover things about each other through a drinking game. Sam's not a hundred percent sure what the protocol is when Dean is crying, but he's pretty sure it means he doesn't get to cry, so he just sits there, feels the warmth of the engine and the sun on his shoulders like blasphemy while Dean stares off into the distance.

15. All the King’s Horses by javajunkie13 - Post Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things - I really loved this short piece. In the aftermath of Dean’s reveal, Sam tries to hold onto Dean while Dean continues to try to make sense of things. I loved the Sam voice here. So good. They are tailspinning. It feels like the time Dad hit a patch of ice halfway to Montana in the middle of January, the Impala fishtailing across the empty road, stopping only inches from a tree that looked like it’d taken a lot of hits.

16. Stories Told by dodger_winslow - Post No Exit - Wow, this story is freaking frantabulous and I *highly* recommend it. It’s set from John’s point of view as he suffers through his deal with the demon, but really he suffers from his own past choices, watching it affect Dean. When Ellen started speaking, John felt himself turning the room cold. It wasn’t an intentional response; just the way things happened when spirits got pissed in the shadow-lives they lived, watching things they could no longer be a part of, feeling things they could no longer communicate, loving people they could no longer help.
