In this study, the relationship between adolescents' perception of God, forgiveness inclination and anger was examined. For this purpose, it was determined whether the perception of God, forgiveness inclination, the trait anger and anger expression styles of the adolescents studying in different educational institutions differ according to demographic variables and the relationship between the adolescents' perception of God, forgiveness inclination and anger was determined. The sample of the study consists of 596 10th grade students studying in different types of high (...) schools in the city center of Ankara. The Demographic Information Form, The Forgiveness Inclination Scale, The God Perception Scale, The Trait Anger and Anger Expression Style Scale were used as data collection tools. The obtained data were analyzed with the unrelated samples t test when the scale scores of the two-category variables were normally distributed and with the Mann-Whitney U test when there was no normal distribution. For variables with more than two categories, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used in cases where the scale scores were normally distributed, and the Kruskal-Wallis H test was used in cases where the normal distribution could not be determined. As a result of the research, statistically significant differences were found in the scores of the sub-dimensions of the scales applied according to the demographic variables. In addition between the Forgiveness Inclination Scale distancing sub- dimension and trait anger, anger-out dimensions; It was determined that there was a positive, moderately statistically significant relationship between the forgiveness inclination scale revenge sub- dimension and trait anger, anger-in, anger-out dimensions. Budizm, MÖ. 6. asırlarda Hindistan’da ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu dinî ve ahlakî öğretiyi benimseyip çevresine öğretmeye çalışan Gautama Sakiamuni’nin ölümünden sonra kendisine “aydınlanan” anlamında Buddha denilmeye başlanmıştır. Buddha’nın izlediği yol ve öğretilerinin din olarak Hindistan’ın muhtelif bölgelerine ve Hint hudutlarının dışına çıkması ise Maurya İmparatoru Aşoka döneminde olmuştur. Çalışmamızın ana konusunu oluşturan Buda Heykellerinin yapımı ise MS. Kuşan İmparatorluğu döneminde tıraş edilmiştir. Biri 53 bir diğeri ise 35 metre yükseklikte olan Buda Heykelleri, bugün Afganistan sınırlarında kalan Bamyan şehrinde yapılmıştır. Afganistan’da Budizm’in (...) yayılması, Bamyan şehrinin Budizm’in merkezlerinden biri olarak kabul görmesi, dinî bir sembol ve kültürel miras olarak kabul edilen heykellerin yapılışı ve tahrip edilişi, çalışmamızın tali konuları arasında değerlendirilmiştir. Buna bağlı olarak çalışmamızda, Afganistan’ın Bamyan şehrinde bulunan iki adet Buda Heykeli’nin, Budizm’in en önemli objektif unsuru ve dinî sembolü olarak tıraş edilmesi, dinî bir unsur olarak kullanılması, kültürel ve tarihi miras olarak muhafaza edilmesi ile tahrip girişimleri ve tahrip edilmesi sürecinin araştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Public health data modernization in the United States has accelerated since COVID-19 exposed systemic weaknesses in fragmented data infrastructure and governance. Technical solutions have advanced, but legal and relational barriers still complicate data sharing across jurisdictions. Traditionally, interjurisdictional data sharing has relied on individually negotiated Data Use Agreements (DUAs), a process that is both resource-heavy and often opaque. To address this, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have proposed a Core DUA to standardize terms and reduce administrative burden. However, (...) its success depends on trust — a fragile foundation increasingly strained by politicization, perceived lack of transparency, and controversial federal actions involving sensitive data. Jurisdictional concerns about compliance, security, and misuse underscore the need for governance frameworks that prioritize clarity, reciprocity, and accountability. Coercive approaches risk deepening fragmentation and undermining collaborative governance. Ultimately, modernization efforts will fail without supporting trust as the cornerstone of public health data governance. This article examines legal variation, transactional friction, and evolving jurisdictional perspectives to illuminate the critical role of trust in shaping the future of public health data systems. Nature-inclusive stakeholder engagement, grounded in Western epistemologies and ontologies, embraces organizational relationships with nature entities considered as stakeholders. Although this construct has conceptual links to regenerative value creation, how it unfolds in an organizational setting remains unclear. This qualitative study informs nature-inclusive stakeholder engagement from a managerial perspective by exploring how Indigenous businesses of the Arhuaco ( Wíntukua ), Kogui ( Kággaba ), Wiwa ( Arzario ), and Kankuamo ( Kaku’chukwa ) peoples of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia, (...) consider nature relationships. The article relies on 27 semi-structured interviews with Indigenous business representatives, secondary literature (co-)authored by the Indigenous peoples of the Sierra Nevada, and observation data. The empirical findings provide insight into a nature-inclusive stakeholder engagement mindset, related interactions, and resulting regenerative value. Adopting Two-Eyed Seeing, the article proposes multidimensional nature-inclusive stakeholder engagement that embraces nature relationships through a relational stakeholder approach, wherein nature informs regenerative value creation as a guide. In recent years, interest has increased in regenerative practices as a strategy for transforming food systems and solving major environmental problems such as biodiversity loss and climate change. However, debates persist regarding these practices and how they ought to be defined. This paper presents a framework for exploring the regenerative potential of food systems, focusing on how food systems activities and technologies are organized rather than the specific technologies or practices being employed. The paper begins with a brief review of (...) debates over sustainable food systems and the varying ways that regenerative food systems have been defined and theorized. Then, it provides the theoretical backing of the framework—the conservation of change principle—which is an interpretation of the laws of thermodynamics and theories of adaptive change as relevant to the regenerative capacity of living systems. Next, the paper introduces the framework itself, which comprises two independent but intersecting dimensions of food systems organization: resource diversity and livelihood flexibility. These two dimensions result in four archetypical regimes for food systems: degenerative, regenerative, impoverished, and coerced. The paper defines each and offers real-world examples. A growing body of literature argues that achieving radical change in the agri-food system requires a radical renegotiation of our relationship with the environment alongside a change in our thinking and approach to transformational food politics. This paper argues that relational approaches such as a more-than-human ethic of care (MTH EoC) can offer a different and constructive perspective to analyse agri-food system transformation because it emphasises social structures and relationships as the basis of environmental change. A MTH EoC has not (...) yet been applied to regenerative agriculture, yet other literature on regenerative agriculture suggests that care may be present in these spaces and calls for the need for social science analysis of the regenerative movement. This paper uses a MTH EoC lens to reveal a diverse array of ways in which power is and can be deployed for change in the regenerative agriculture movement in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Globally, regenerative agriculture tends to be analysed through positivist, scientific approaches that focus on biophysical markers of ecological improvement. Yet, a relational approach reveals how engagement in regenerative agriculture is creating significant shifts in mindset towards more holistic and relational understandings of biological and social ecosystems. A regenerative mindset framework is suggested as a method of understanding the connection between a regenerative form of thinking, being and doing for farmers. Interviews suggested that this shift in farmers’ socio-ecological relations is crucial to the transformational potential of regenerative agriculture. This paper argues that relational analyses such as the MTH EoC approach used to analyse regenerative agriculture in this research, refresh the way we analyse agri-food system change. They also are critical to guiding and supporting on-the-ground socio-ecological shifts that are necessary to see agricultural transformation. (shrink)

Regenerative medicine aims at replacing, engineering, and regenerating human cells, tissues, and organs to restore normal functioning.

From organ transplants to genetic therapies by way of the manufacture of replacement tissue, regenerative medicine incarnates a biomedical reasoning that is unique to contemporary society. As a re-engineering of the body, regenerative medicine is the most accomplished manifestation of contemporary biopolitics: it concretely announces the emergence of what sociologist Karin Knorr Cetina calls the ‘culture of life’, in which individual existence is symbolically assimilated to biological conditions. This article will examine the symbolic and ethical issues of regenerative medicine, notably (...) regarding representations of the ageing body. In doing so, it will place this new branch of biomedical research back into the context from which it emerged, with the goal of grasping the social and cultural suppositions on which regenerative medicine is based. The growing number of elderly people in Western societies is one such central element. This article therefore intends to demonstrate how regenerative medicine is rooted in the modern biomedical deconstruction of death, which underlies the contemporary technoscientific fantasy of indefinitely extending longevity. Recently, a friend of one of these writers told her story of using one of a healthcare product to activate her stem cells as part of regenerative medicine. Regenerative medicine is a field of medicine that seeks to repair or replace damaged or diseased tissues and organs. This can be done through a variety of methods, including stem cell therapy, tissue engineering, and gene therapy. This is a short review article on this rapid field called regenerative medicine, in particular via (...) a new method called photobiomodulation, especially by virtue of low-intensity laser pen treatment. Hopefully it will attract more research in this interesting direction, both for laser/photobiomodulation to boost plant growth as well as in healthcare (see also: Christianto & Smarandache, 2022; Christianto, 2023). Das Buchprojekt "Regenerative Zukünfte und künstliche Intelligenz" erscheint in drei Teilen mit jeweils einem inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt - PLANET, PEOPLE, PROFIT - und beschäftigt sich übergreifend mit den Nachhaltigkeitszielen der Vereinten Nationen (Sustainable Development Goals, SDG). In diesem ersten Band geht es um die ökologische Dimension der Nachhaltigkeit, in der Umweltaspekte im Fokus stehen. This volume examines regenerative medicine (RM) through a global bioethics lens that foregrounds the structural asymmetries, epistemic exclusions, and governance disparities shaping its development and uptake. RM refers to a range of innovative therapies, clinical interventions, and research activities aimed at repairing or replacing damaged or diseased human cells, tissues, and organs, with an emphasis on conditions currently considered incurable. While RM is often discussed using examples, standards, and governance models from high-income countries (the so-called “Global North”), much less is (...) documented about its realities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly in the “Global South.” These contexts are frequently overlooked in ways that understate their contributions, impose ill-fitting external frameworks, or perpetuate assumptions of absence or inactivity. Such omissions contribute to epistemic injustice, in which certain perspectives, priorities, and knowledge systems are marginalized in global health innovation. Responding to this imbalance, the present work assembles interdisciplinary contributions from scholars and practitioners deeply engaged with RM in LMICs. It adopts a collaborative bioethics approach that does not treat ethics as an afterthought to technological progress, but as integral to how innovation is imagined, governed, and shared. The collection employs a “reconnaissance mode of inquiry” to reveal underexplored practices, governance dynamics, and normative perspectives, allowing for locally grounded accounts that resist the constraints of dominant narratives. The chapters in the volume are organized in two parts: • Foundational Critiques — Analytical treatments of epistemic injustice, global asymmetries, and ethical pluralism in RM. • National Case Studies — Country-specific explorations of RM governance, practice, and ethics in diverse settings across Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe. By illuminating both the commonalities and divergences that emerge from these contexts, this book offers a richer, more inclusive account of RM and its ethical governance. Regenerative agriculture is an approach that places soil conservation at the center of its practices. As part of this approach, regenerative agriculture seeks to address concerns related to environmental and socio-economic dimensions of food production through the promotion of a range of best management practices. While regenerative agriculture has received support at various levels in many countries, including Canada, adoption remains low. Systems thinking strength has been recognized as facilitating farmer adoption of several regenerative agricultural practices including rotational grazing (RG). (...) However, few approaches have examined multiple types of systems thinking nor the breadth of a system which may underlay the diverse ways that systems thinking influences agricultural practice adoption and persistence. Furthermore, few studies have taken a quantitative approach into understanding how different systems are emphasized by adopters of RG within the context of systems thinking. Using survey data from program participants in a national producer training program, we explored the use of two measures of systems thinking, systems thinking strength and diversity of a system in RG adopters. Our research highlights how the inclusion of the breadth of systems farmers consider can help us better understand RG adopters and support efforts to recruit new adopters. Furthermore, our results suggest that adopters are not homogenous in the types of systems they emphasize in their farming nor in the strength of their systems thinking. Future training programs can utilize these insights to leverage existing system emphases of RG producers and integrate them in the development of training programs to attract potential adopters. Regulation of Regenerative Medicines: A Global Perspective covers regenerative medicine regulations globally where frameworks have been or are being established. Chapters by discipline include manufacturing, supply chain, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, toxicology, and combination product.

Global citizenship education (GCE) is an active entanglement in the civic priorities of the planet. In recent research, the concept has emerged as a multivalent coalescence of being, an engagement with planetary tensions and revisions of cosmopolitan ideology. In this article, I argue for a theoretical interpretation of GCE reliant on liminal-oriented practice and the potentialities of regenerative agency. Privileging Axel Honneth’s interpretation of social freedom and Boaventura de Sousa Santos’ postabyssal thinking, I argue that interfaces with the limit of (...) our global perception reveal the regenerative qualities of our relations, allowing us to conceive ourselves as uniquely influenced by globality and possessing critical agency for otherness. Although such global perceptions can only ever be wrought within the ideological constraints of locality, a globally situated agency is more agile as a regenerative set of dispositions and interknowledge ‘globalities’. I further argue that regenerative liminalities hold significant implications for teaching and learning, as they signify the importance of a global consciousness over a technologically rationalized competency-based approach. Despite growing engagement by business practitioners in regenerative sustainability, there is little research into what factors contribute to its successful implementation. This paper offers first steps to close that gap. It examines theoretical foundations of and proposes empirical research for studying such innovative business practices. Our literature review draws on research in natural sciences, organization and management studies, corporate sustainability, and business strategy to theoretically (1) define regenerative sustainability, (2) explore how adopting principles of regeneration can help firms achieve “true (...) business sustainability” (Dyllick & Muff, 2016: 163), and (3) assess potential benefits, obstacles, and enablers of such radically different business models. We then propose an in-depth interpretive case study methodology to empirically investigate the phenomenon of interest, namely how proactive firms effectively enact regenerative sustainability principles. Novel therapies resulting from regenerative medicine and tissue engineering technology may offer new hope for patients with injuries, end-stage organ failure, degenerative disorders and many other clinical issues. Currently, patients suffering from diseased and injured organs are treated with transplanted organs. However, there is a shortage of donor organs that is worsening yearly as the population ages and new cases of organ failure increase. Scientists in the field of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering are now applying the principles of cell (...) transplantation, material science, and bioengineering to construct biological substitutes that can restore and maintain normal function in diseased and injured tissues. In addition, the stem cell field is a rapidly advancing part of regenerative medicine, and new discoveries in this field create new options for this type of therapy. For example, new types of stem cells, such as amniotic fluid and placental stem cells, that can circumvent the ethical issues associated with embryonic stem cells have been discovered. The process of somatic cell nuclear transfer and the creation of induced pluripotent cells provide still other potential sources of stem cells for cell-based tissue engineering applications. While stem cells are still in the research phase, some therapies arising from tissue engineering endeavors that make use of autologous, adult cells have already entered the clinical setting, indicating that regenerative medicine holds much promise for the future. Extensive rostral mandibulectomy in dogs typically results in instability of the mandibles that may lead to malocclusion, difficulty in prehension, mastication, and pain of the temporomandibular joint. Large rostral mandibular defects are challenging to reconstruct due to the complex geometry of this region. In order to restore mandibular continuity and stability following extensive rostral mandibulectomy, we developed a surgical technique using a combination of intraoral and extraoral approaches, a locking titanium plate, and a compression resistant matrix infused with rhBMP-2. Furthermore, (...) surgical planning that consisted of computed tomographic scanning and 3D model printing was utilized. We describe a regenerative surgical technique for immediate or delayed reconstruction of critical-size rostral mandibular defects in five dogs. Three dogs had healed with intact gingival covering over the mandibular defect and had immediate return to normal function and occlusion. Two dogs had the complication of focal plate exposure and dehiscence, which was corrected with mucosal flaps and suturing; these dogs have since healed with intact gingival covering over the mandibular defect. Mineralized tissue formation was palpated clinically within 2 weeks and solid bone formation within 3 months. CT findings at 6 months postoperatively demonstrated that the newly regenerated mandibular bone had increased in mineral volume with evidence of integration between the native bone, new bone, and CRM compared to the immediate postoperative CT. We conclude that rostral mandibular reconstruction using a regenerative approach provides an excellent solution for restoring mandibular continuity and preventing mandibular instability in dogs. The identification and valorization of unacknowledged, feminized forms of economic productivity has been an important task for feminist theory. In this article, we expand and rethink existing definitions of labour, in order to recognize the essential economic role women play in the stem cell and regenerative medicine industries, new fields of biomedical research that are rapidly expanding throughout the world. Women constitute the primary tissue donors in the new stem cell industries, which require high volumes of human embryos, oöcytes, foetal (...) tissue and umbilical cord blood. Such material is generally given for free in the advanced industrial democracies, constituted as a surplus (‘spare’ embryos) or waste (umbilical cord ‘afterbirth’, cadaveric foetuses, poor quality oöcytes) whose generative powers should not be withheld from others. At the same time, among impoverished female populations in developing nations, such biological material is now often procured through frankly transactional relations, where women undertake risky procedures for small fees. In each case, female bodily productivity is mobilized to support bioeconomic research, yet the economic value involved in these relations is largely unacknowledged. In this article, we consider both the gift economy and the transactional economy for reproductive tissues as a form of labour. In order to fully conceptualize the specificities of feminized productivity in the bioeconomy, we distinguish between earlier feminist theories of reproductive labour and the emerging practices generated by stem cell research, which we term regenerative labour. We consider how historical transformations in the regulation of feminized labour and the technical repertoires of stem cell research renegotiate the productivity limits of female reproductive biology, opening it out to novel and profitable forms of surplus value and enrolling women in complex negotiations over their role in bioeconomic activity. Regenerative ranching emphasizes ecosystem restoration and is informed by holistic decision-making. It offers an opportunity to transform human-animal relations in ranching. However, its implications for animal welfare remain underexplored. This study examined human-animal relations in regenerative ranching in the U.S. Pacific Northwest, using the four lenses from integral theory: individual perceptions, practices, cultural norms, and systemic structures. Through semi-structured interviews with 16 regenerative ranchers who practice holistic decision-making in the Pacific Northwest, and 10 key informants (i.e. NGOs, thought leaders, university (...) professors), participant observation, and thematic analysis, we identified tensions between relational values and practices. Ranchers recognized animal sentience and expressed compassion, but their instrumental language (e.g. labeling cattle as tools) reflected a cognitive dissonance. Practices aligned with relational values, such as low stress animal handling and fence-line weaning, coexisted with culturally rooted stressors (e.g. branding and castration events). Cultural traditions celebrating community bonds prioritized human well-being over animal welfare, while systemic barriers (e.g. mandatory branding laws and market dependencies) appeared to constrain animal welfare improvements. Our findings highlight regenerative ranching’s potential for transforming human-animal relations in ranching. This can be realized by nurturing relational values like care and responsibility and addressing cultural and institutional inertia. We propose integrating animal welfare explicitly into the holistic decision-making framework, advocating for policy reforms, and fostering dialogue with Indigenous Peoples to reconcile ethical, ecological, and economical priorities of regenerative ranching. By acting on their relational values, regenerative ranchers could be role models for compassionate, multispecies coexistence, expanding the true meaning of regeneration in agriculture involving animals. Regenerative business has emerged as a transformative paradigm that moves beyond sustainability, focusing on creating net-positive impacts on ecological, social, and economic systems. Grounded in systems thinking, this study conceptualizes regenerative business through the perspectives of Southeast Asian youth. Using a mixed-methods design, the research first engaged 28 business-oriented university students in a structured concept mapping workshop to generate and cluster perceptions of regenerative business. This was followed by a survey of 238 university students, whose responses provided statistical validation through (...) exploratory factor analysis. Systems thinking offers a holistic framework to understand the interconnections between regenerative business practices and broader socio-ecological systems, emphasizing adaptability, resilience, and feedback loops. The final analysis identified four primary clusters: Impact to Environment, Impact to Society, Innovation Practices, and Regenerative Business Models. Key findings highlight how regenerative businesses operate as adaptive systems that co-evolve with their environments, integrating circular economy principles, social equity, and systemic innovation to drive long-term transformation. This research contributes to the empirical literature on regenerative business by advancing a framework that balances stakeholder needs, fosters collaboration, and embeds regenerative principles within self-sustaining, interdependent systems. By applying systems thinking, this study underscores the necessity of dynamic, multi-layered interventions that ensure businesses transition from harm reduction to active ecological and social regeneration. The findings offer valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and businesses seeking to embed regenerative principles into management practices, fostering resilience and innovation in an increasingly complex global landscape. Regenerative agriculture has been proposed as a sustainable approach that balances environmental and economic trade-offs in farming. However, regenerative agriculture lacks a consistent definition and implementation, and there is a need for context-specific information on adoption. In our study, we evaluated farmer perceptions in an economically depressed region on the Indiana-Ohio border. Guided by diffusion theory, we explored definitions of regenerative agriculture and motivations and barriers to adoption using an online pre-survey (n = 49) and exploratory, in-depth interviews with early (...) adopters (n = 16) who identified themselves as using regenerative agriculture. Early adopters defined regenerative agriculture as principles and practices that support healthier soils, with an emphasis on livestock and cover cropping. Interviewees noted that environmental and economic priorities were more strongly linked in regenerative agriculture versus conventional agriculture. Motivations were primarily environmental (e.g., soil, water, biodiversity), whereas barriers were primarily economic (e.g., start-up costs, marketing). However, community benefits, such as healthier food and farmer wellbeing, were other motivators. Regenerative practices were perceived as highly observable but lacking in support from the broader community. Further, in economically depressed communities, costs were seen as limiting, especially for livestock integration, which was perceived to have lower trialability versus practices like cover crops. Our analysis reveals that although many farmers would not say they use regenerative agriculture, there is increasing engagement with some associated practices. Financial and marketing support and facilitating information sharing between early adopters and other farmers may increase regenerative practices in economically depressed regions of the Corn Belt. Evolution exploits the physics of non‐neural bioelectricity to implement anatomical homeostasis: a process in which embryonic patterning, remodeling, and regeneration achieve invariant anatomical outcomes despite external interventions. Linear “developmental pathways” are often inadequate explanations for dynamic large‐scale pattern regulation, even when they accurately capture relationships between molecular components. Biophysical and computational aspects of collective cell activity toward a target morphology reveal interesting aspects of causation in biology. This is critical not only for unraveling evolutionary and developmental events, but also for (...) the design of effective strategies for biomedical intervention. Bioelectrical controls of growth and form, including stochastic behavior in such circuits, highlight the need for the formulation of nuanced views of pathways, drivers of system‐level outcomes, and modularity, borrowing from concepts in related disciplines such as cybernetics, control theory, computational neuroscience, and information theory. Modern agriculture has increased yields but degraded socio-ecological systems all over the world. Consequently, advocates of regenerative agriculture (RA) aim to regenerate land and transform food systems. We undertook a systematic literature review of 104 peer-reviewed articles to determine how relational values (RVs) might be contributing to RA. RVs are values that emerge from specific human-nature relationships or meaningful relationships between people that happen in nature. Cultivating these values could inspire mindset shifts that support agricultural transformations. This review was guided (...) by our research questions: (1) to what extent have RVs been implicitly or explicitly examined across the RA literature? (2) What implications might RVs have for the transformative potential of RA? Building on prior research, we explored salient articulations of RVs – identity through relationships; good life; sense of place; care; and human connections through nature. The review highlighted the role of Indigenous knowledges in RA; sustaining conditions for RVs; and the valuing of life supporting processes in RA. Our results reflect a distinction between productivist framings of RA that primarily emphasise instrumental values and relational framings of RA that foreground RVs but embrace value pluralism. We propose this distinction is more significant to RA’s transformative potential than the process-outcomes distinction. We suggest that conceptualisations of RA are more likely to contribute to sustainability transformations if they mobilise the (often latently held) RVs evident in the RA literature. Based on these results we develop checking questions for RA advocates to reflexively assess whether key actors are engaged in relational RA. (shrink)

As the term regenerative agriculture caught fire in public discourse around 2019, it was promptly labelled a buzzword. While the buzzword accusation tends to be regarded as negative, these widely used terms also reflect an important area of growing public interest. Exploring a buzzword can thus help us understand our current moment and offer insights to paths forward. In this study, we explored how and why different individuals and groups adopt certain key terms or buzzwords, in this case the term (...) “regenerative agriculture”. We used an interpretivist approach to understand how “regenerative agriculture” is being constructed, interpreted, understood, and employed, drawing from 19 semi-structured interviews conducted with farmers, researchers, private companies, and NGO/nonprofits. Several interviewees felt that regenerative agriculture is making an important societal shift in thinking towards addressing major issues like climate change and parity in our food and agricultural systems. However, farmers in particular felt that the term is being greenwashed, coopting the work they do, and even diluting the meaning. We also found that regenerative agriculture is being advanced as mobilizing “win-wins”—for farmers, for consumers, for society—but that this discourse may be veiling the political and economic agendas of the big companies using the term. Our findings further illustrated the debates over standardizing the term regenerative agriculture, with some contending that there should be room for “continuous improvement” but others felt it is meaningless without a definition. Regenerative Medicine promises to develop treatments to regrow healthy tissues and cure the physical body. One of the emerging developments within this field is regenerative implants, such as jawbone or heart valve implants, that can be broken down by the body and are gradually replaced with living tissue. Yet challenges for embodiment are to be expected, given that the implants are designed to integrate deeply into the tissue of the living body, so that implant and body become one. In this (...) paper, we explore how regenerative implants may affect the embodied experience of implant recipients. To this end, we take a phenomenological approach. First, we explore what insights the existing phenomenological and empirical literature on embodiment offers regarding the experience of illness and of living with regular (non-regenerative) implants and organ transplants. Second, we apply these insights to better understand how future implant recipients might experience living with regenerative implants. Third, we conclude that concepts and considerations from the existing phenomenological literature do not sufficiently address what it might be like to live with an implantable technology that, over time, becomes one with the living body. We argue that the interwovenness and intimate relationship of people living with regenerative implants should be understood in terms of ‘entanglement’. Entanglement allows us to explore the complexities of human-technology relations, acknowledging the inseparability of humans and implantable technologies. Our theoretical foundations regarding the role of embodiment may be tested empirically once more people will be living with regenerative implants. (shrink)

The effects of environmental degradation and climate change are propelling a discourse shift towards regenerative agriculture, yet understanding motivations for implementing regenerative practices on private agricultural lands is still a challenge. We study that challenge within the realm of regenerative ranching, a subcategory of regenerative agriculture. By examining the frequency of values articulated by respondents, a valuation typology stemming from 24 semi-structured interviews with ranchers in Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota is revealed. Instrumental valuations dominated in the studied region (...) in connection to regenerative ranching practices, although some respondents articulated relational and intrinsic valuations tied to their practices. While this study focuses on regenerative ranching, we posit that a better understanding of the interplay between diverse valuations as they relate to private land management practices is vital to promoting more resilient and thoughtful ecosystem governance. Contesting Extinctions: Decolonial and Regenerative Futures critically interrogates the discursive framing of extinctions and how they relate to the systems that bring about biocultural loss. The chapters in this multidisciplinary volume examine approaches to ecological and social extinction and resurgence from a variety of fields, including environmental studies, literary studies, political science, and philosophy. Grounding their scholarship in decolonial, Indigenous, and counter-hegemonic frameworks, the contributors advocate for shifting the discursive focus from ruin to regeneration. -/- .

Although much of regenerative design thinking deals with ecosystem impact reductions, eco-efficiency improvements, and scientific and technological interventions, there is still a conceptual gap and an opportunity, for “arts based regeneration” as a possibility for urban renewal. The Echigo-Tsumari Art Field in Japan serves as an example of a successful attempt at creating a regenerative community and economy through using an art-based intervention in a unique way that stretches across villages and existing rural landscapes. This intervention renewed completely a community (...) through exchanges of a variety of actors in a regional setting. This essay examines the Echigo-Tsumari case as an exemplar of a regenerative regional development and as an alternative complement to the dominant modes of addressing sustainability. 〔都市や地域の〕再生計画概念の大部分が、生態系への影響縮小や環境効率のよい開発、科学的・技術的介入と結びついたものであるにもかかわらず、都市再開発としての“アートを基盤とした再生”にはいまだに概念的な 欠落があり、その実現は将来的見込みとしか見なされていない側面がある。日本の〈越後妻有 大地の芸術祭〉は、自治体再生・経済再生創出の模範的な成功例だ。この芸術祭では、アートを基盤としたユニークな方法による介入が、地元の村々や田園風景の合間を縫って行われた。芸術祭は、地域を支える様々な要素 のやりとりを通して、コミュニティを一新したのである。本小論では、地域再開発の模範例として、また持続可能性への主要なアプローチの補足的代替案として、この越後妻有の事例を考察する。 This article is in Japanese. The innovative field of Regenerative Medicine (RM) is expected to extend the possibilities of prevention or early treatment in healthcare. Increasingly, clinical trials will be developed for people at risk of disease to investigate these RM interventions. These individuals at risk are characterised by their susceptibility for developing clinically manifest disease in future due to the existence of degenerative abnormalities. So far, there has been little debate about the ethical appropriateness of including such individuals at risk in clinical trials. We (...) discuss three main challenges of selecting this participant model for testing RM interventions: the challenge of achieving a proportional risk–benefit balance; complexities in the trial design in terms of follow-up and sample size; and the difficulty of obtaining informed consent due to the many uncertainties. We conclude that selecting the model is not ethically justifiable for first-in-man trials with RM interventions due to the high risks and uncertainties. However, the model can be ethically appropriate for testing the efficacy of RM interventions under the following conditions: interventions should be low risk; the degenerative abnormalities (and other risk factors) should be strongly related with disease within a short time frame; robust preclinical evidence of efficacy needs to be present; and the informed consent procedure should contain extra safeguards with regard to communication on uncertainties. Regenerative agriculture refers to a suite of principles, practices, or outcomes which seek to improve soil health, biodiversity, climate, ecosystem function, and socioeconomic outcomes. However, recent reviews highlight wide heterogeneity in how it is defined. This impedes our ability to understand what regenerative agriculture is and has left the movement open to strategic repurposing by diverse stakeholders. Furthermore, the conceptual franchising of the regenerative agriculture debate by Western culture has omitted discussions surrounding social justice, relational values, and the contribution of (...) Indigenous and local knowledge that does not align with Western-centric producer-consumer frameworks. This is a continuation of injustice by creating barriers to representation and participation, and its confrontation will ultimately be necessary for regenerative agriculture to achieve its transformative potential. This article demonstrates that the farming techniques associated with the regenerative agriculture movement today have been practiced for centuries, and in some cases millennia, by Indigenous and local communities around the world. We propose that current Western academic attempts to define regenerative agriculture have resulted in long lists of practices, principles, and outcomes which fall short of describing the whole, because they lack the relational values component that is so integral to these Indigenous and local knowledge systems. We take an urgently needed, Indigenous-informed approach to defining regenerative agriculture, which confronts current epistemic injustice and prioritizes sociocultural and relational values. Finally, we propose an anti-colonial definition that draws on diverse knowledge systems including Indigenous ecophilosophies and published scientific analyses. (shrink)

It may soon become possible not just to replace, but to re-grow healthy tissues after injury or disease, because of innovations in the field of Regenerative Medicine. One particularly promising innovation is a regenerative valve implant to treat people with heart valve disease. These implants are fabricated from so-called ‘smart’, ‘lifelike’ materials. Implanted inside a heart, these implants stimulate re-growth of a healthy, living heart valve. While the technological development advances, the ethical implications of this new technology are still unclear (...) and a clear conceptual understanding of the notions ‘smart' and ‘lifelike' is currently lacking. In this paper, we explore the conceptual and ethical implications of the development of smart lifelike materials for the design of regenerative implants, by analysing heart valve implants as a showcase. In our conceptual analysis, we show that the materials are considered ‘smart’ because they can communicate with human tissues, and ‘lifelike’ because they are structurally similar to these tissues. This shows that regenerative valve implants become intimately integrated in the living tissues of the human body. As such, they manifest the ontological entanglement of body and technology. In our ethical analysis, we argue this is ethically significant in at least two ways: It exacerbates the irreversibility of the implantation procedure, and it might affect the embodied experience of the implant recipient. With our conceptual and ethical analysis, we aim to contribute to responsible development of smart lifelike materials and regenerative implants. (shrink)

With unbridled exponential economic growth, earth systems and social systems are headed for catastrophic meltdown. Meanwhile, much of humanity is highly dependent on current institutions. Second-order cybernetics can help society come to grips with the enormous demand of adapting existing institutions for a regenerative economy. While the current trajectory of increasing consumption and rapid ecological decay will lead to collapse, the progress achieved by civilization can be vindicated by large-scale investment in regenerating natural capital assets, developing open-source technologies for the (...) public good, and rebuilding local agricultural economies dedicated to health and well-being. It is recommended that regenerative practices are supported by academic institutions centered on place-based service-learning. A regenerative economy, in contrast to a growth economy, is part of the pursuit of the long-term establishment of a steady-state economy. This vision does not limit the possibility that humanity will make outstanding technological progress, explore space or merge with artificial intelligence – but argues that appreciating the nature’s technology provided to humanity through eons evolution, and avoiding short-term self-destruction should be priorities. Development of methods to reawaken the semi‐dormant regenerative potential that lies within adult human tissues would hold promise for the restoration of diseased or damaged organs and tissues. While most of the regeneration potential is suppressed in many vertebrates, including humans, during adult life, urodele amphibians (salamanders) retain their regenerative ability throughout adulthood. Studies in newts and axolotls, two salamander models, have provided significant knowledge about adult limb regeneration. In this review, we present a comparative analysis of salamander and mammalian (...) regeneration and discuss how evolutionarily altered properties of the regenerative environment can be exploited to restore full regenerative potential in the human body. Reprogramming of somatic cells to a pluripotent state holds huge potentials for regenerative medicine. However, a debate over which method is better, somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) or induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, still persists. Both approaches have the potential to generate patient‐specific pluripotent stem cells for replacement therapy. Yet, although SCNT has been successfully applied in various vertebrates, no human pluripotent stem cells have been generated by SCNT due to technical, legal and ethical difficulties. On the other hand, human (...) iPS cell lines have been reported from both healthy and diseased individuals. A recent study reported the generation of triploid human pluripotent stem cells by transferring somatic nuclei into oocytes, a variant form of SCNT. In this essay, we discuss this progress and the potentials of these two reprogramming approaches for regenerative medicine. (shrink)

What is now familiarly referred to as the ‘embryonic stem (ES) cell’ is a recent biological category whose origins lie in research into benign and malignant teratomas carried out in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. In these studies, the question of the normal or pathological character of the ES cell was a matter of considerable debate and indeed the term ES cell was often used interchangeably with that of the embryonal carcinoma (EC) cell. This article argues that the indecisiveness of (...) the entity known as the ES cell—its refusal to commit to established demarcations between the normal and the pathological—continues to haunt the field of stem cell science. Exploring the prehistory of research into ES cells, early theories of cancer (in particular the embryonal theory expounded by Julius Cohnheim) and recent theoretical critiques of the somatic mutation theory, the article not only points to a shift in understandings of the normal and the pathological but asks under what conditions such shifts are able to take place.
