Günther Anders offers one of the first phenomenological analyses of broadcast radio (in 1930) and its transformation of the contemporary experience of music. Anders also develops a reflection on its political consequences as he continues his reflection in a discussion of radio and newsreel, film and television in his 1956 ‘The World as Phantom and Matrix’. A reflection on the consequences of this transformation brings in Friedrich Kittler’s reflection on radio and precision bombing. A further reflection on (...) Jean Baudrillard’s notion of ‘speech without response’ permits a review of digital culture and the self-creation of the digital consumer absorbed in what Anders named a schizo-topia, that is, today, an autistic culture of distraction, displacement, and self-driven surveillance. During the communist era, Radio Free Europe (RFE) was Romania's favorite radio station. This paper analyzes the role of RFE in everyday life in the strictly controlled Romanian communist state by looking at the broadcasts of RFE's Romanian Department, their audience, and their impact. Drawing largely on the RFE archives at the Vera and Donald Blinken Open Society Archives (OSA) and the former secret police files at the National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives (CNSAS), it (...) investigates how radio waves mediated and channeled information while preparing people to embrace political and cultural change. The paper focuses on the circulation of knowledge, media confluences, and human agency. The rituals that developed around the secrecy which governed the listening process, the personal requests, attitudes, and opinions expressed in letters to RFE, and oral and written testimonies, coupled with the disproportionate and, at times, extreme reactions of the communist state, together reveal the carving out of individual spaces that allowed for the preservation of the “self” during Nicolae Ceausescu's dictatorship. At such critical historical moments, the connection became visible. Through an analysis of recent media representations in which RFE figures, such as Cold Waves, this study also looks at how RFE shaped personal memories of communist times. (shrink)

While to political theorists in the United States ‘community radio’ may seem a quaint holdover of the democratization movements of the 1960s, community radio has been an important tool in development contexts for decades. In this paper I investigate how community radio is conceptualized within and outside of the development frame, as a solution to development problems, as part of development projects communication strategy, and as a tool for increasing democratic political participation in development projects. I want (...) to show that community radio is an essential tool of democratization and democracy outside of the development frame. To do so, I will bring out the conceptual and structural dimensions of community radio through examples of existing community radios, both those which are independently created and those which have been created as development projects. These structural and conceptual elements provide community radio the potential to realize the goals of development practice while avoiding characteristic pitfalls. These ‘pitfalls’ of development are also pitfalls of democratization and democracy in existing democratic states, and include: depoliticization, limited participation, particularly of marginalized groups. En este contexto de crisis, examinamos, mediante técnicas de análisis de contenido, la presencia de la arqueología en programas de radio y estudiamos los recursos lingüísticos que hacen a la comunicación capaz de emocionar, aumentado las posibilidades de éxito de la divulgación científica. Partiendo de esta premisa es posible inferir que la radio constituye un recurso útil y valioso para consolidar competencias para la convivencia social en los estudiantes de educación media. Para alcanzar el objetivo propuesto el trabajo se enmarca en una investigación de tipo documental. The objective of the radio science investigations is to extract the maximum scientific information from the data provided by the radio and radar systems on the Viking Orbiters and Landers. Unique features of the Viking missions include tracking of the landers on the surface of Mars, dual-frequency S-and X- band tracking data from the orbiters, lander-to-orbiter communications system data, and lander radar data, all of which provide sources of information for a number of scientific investigations. In my work on Dutch and French colonial radio history and its intersection in South-East Asia, I examine how the crackle traces a history of failures. This framing of colonial radio history through the lens of failure stems from a refusal to repeat history on the terms given by colonial archival materials. I approach the crackle as a glitch, an active refusal to seamlessly perform the self-congratulatory discourse of colonial success broadcasted and recorded on shortwave radio. In (...) my period of focus, around 1945, the above-mentioned colonial regimes continuously attempted and failed to eradicate crackles from shortwave radio broadcasts. I argue that this struggle against the crackle reveals the fantasy of closeness and immediacy that the radiophonic crackle disrupted. The crackle derailed the colonial discursive regime and exposed its internal incoherences. The crackle, incidentally, traces a history of resistance as it became the site of a symbolic and material struggle for decolonization. (shrink)

In radio, spokesperson credibility is a resource that can improve the effectiveness of a message, and its analysis requires the study of how voice qualities influence the listener. The aims of this study are to design and test the suitability of a scale of radio spokesperson credibility, and to analyse the effect of the phonoaesthetic function – that is, how a spokesperson’s gender, vocal pitch, accent and their interactions affect their credibility. We conducted a 2 × 2 × (...) 2 experimental design via eight radio programmes in which we inserted a radio spot as stimulus material. The hypotheses were tested on a sample of 987 Spanish radio listeners, and the advertised service was blood donation. The results allowed the validation of a scale of spokesperson credibility, traditionally used in audiovisual media, formed by three dimensions (attractiveness, expertise and trustworthiness), and provide several implications for the selection of a spokesperson for radio. As the Philippines continues to grapple with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, new modalities of instruction are being devised by the administration of Rodrigo Duterte, through the Department of Education (DepEd). Among these are what the DepEd provided as self-learning modules (SLMs) combined with “alternative learning delivery modalities” which include radio-based instruction (DepEd 2020). The SLMs and radiobased instruction are the most common modalities of learning, being the most accessible especially for the poor students of the country. This (...) paper will examine the pedagogical and political dimensions of a radio-based instruction. Coming from the tradition of philosophy of technology that emphasizes the political nature of technology, I will argue how the logic of radio broadcasting predetermines a specific pedagogy and form of communication. I will further argue how this predetermined form of communication carries the danger of being an effective support for authoritarianism. (shrink)

Researchers have multiple ways to collect primary data, each one having its particular ethics implications that must be reflected on and accommodated in the research design and implementation. In this paper, we reflect on the ethical implications of employing a radio phone-in program as a method of data collection. Specifically, we report on our experiences of using radio phone-ins to obtain timely data on a topical issue: the impacts on citizens of policies banning certain informal economic activities in (...) Lagos, Nigeria. We theorize our work with reference to participatory communication, reflecting on how radio phone-ins are available to citizens to communicate their views. This process gives voice and empowerment to citizens, especially those who are marginalized, reducing imbalances in power in political debate. We further argue that when researchers collect data not only for their own research interests and outputs (“research of policy”), but also to develop a body of evidence to try to engage with, feed into and influence policymaking (“research for policy”), how they use the information gathered, and not only from radio phone-ins, raises fundamental questions around research ethics and integrity, with researchers mediating between callers and the politicians who may be the intended audience for their contributions. Careful reflection by researchers is needed to ensure research participation empowers citizens when debating current issues, rather than serving to reinforce power imbalances, with researchers and how they use participants’ information in seeking to influence policy. This essay explores the political significance of two largely unexplored texts on American radio that Adorno originally composed in English after emigrating to the United States: Current of Music: Elements of a Radio Theory and The Psychological Technique of Martin Luther Thomas’ Radio Addresses. Here, productively complicating the traditional image of him, Adorno translates his theory to a broader public in ways that reflect a desire to understand and inform democratic citizenship as enacted at the level of (...) the everyday customs, conventions, and habits of the people. Ultimately, Adorno’s writings on radio in the United States show how he tries to strengthen the substantive practice of democracy through a unique form of democratic leadership as democratic pedagogy that represents the practical enactment of an early version of negative dialectics. With this justification for Adorno’s complicated commitments to democracy in mind, we might begin to read him as a twentieth-century democratic theorist and productively turn to an unlikely thinker, not just to read a message in a bottle but to help us chart our current position and navigate our future course. Diese Konstellation zeigt sich immer wieder anders, exemplarisch in der künstlerischen Praxis der historischen Avantgarden, im Radiolehrstück von Bertolt Brecht (1898–1956), in Clement Greenbergs (1903–1994) Radiovorträgen, im Radiodenken von Frantz Fanon (1925–1961), in Ulrike Meinhofs (1934–1976) Radiofeatures und in der Radiotheorie der Schizoanalyse. Dabei bedeutet die Schizoanalyse eine grundlegende Rekonfiguration künstlerischen und politischen Handelns nach 1968, mit der das Schizoradio einhergeht. Nachdem zuvor die entsprechende (...) Radiotheorie der Schizoanalyse skizziert worden ist, geht es nun also um die spezifische Qualität ihrer Aktivismen. Konkret eingebettet werden diese in die revolutionären Narrative des Langen Zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts. Die Darstellung im Rahmen des Kapitels gliedert sich dazu in drei Denkbewegungen: Zuerst werden Konzepte aus dem Diskurs zu den politischen Bewegungen, die im Schizodiskurs immer wieder zur Sprache kommen, geklärt. Dann gilt es, die unterschiedlichen Tendenzen des Schizo(radio)aktivismus aufzufächern. In welcher Form treten sie zutage? Wie unterscheiden sie sich? Und in welchen Etappen lassen sie sich in ein historisches Narrativ gruppieren? In einer dritten Denkbewegung geht es dann um Félix Guattaris (1930–1992) Überlegungen zum ästhetischen Paradigma. Situiert wird es im Hinblick auf das Schizoradio. Das Kapitel schließt mit einem Exkurs, in dem die Kritik, die Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak (*1942) gegenüber der Schizoanalyse vorträgt, in Bezug zum Schizoradio diskutiert wird. (shrink)

In 1938, following his extensive engagement with Husserl’s philosophy in Oxford, Adorno was hired to work in Paul Lazarsfeld’s interdisciplinary Princeton Radio Research Project. The methodological conflict between Adorno and Lazarsfeld, which ensued, has often been addressed in literature under the headlines of “administrative” versus “critical” research. While „administrative research” serves a public or private institution interested in investigating media communication, focusing primarily on quantitative measurements, „critical research” tackles media phenomena by simultaneously exposing their broader social context as well (...) as their entanglement with administrative research. The present chapter focuses on Adorno’s revaluation of phenomenology in this specific context, showing how phenomenology can become a useful methodological tool both for countering “administrative” tendencies in contemporary media studies and for reflecting the mutual entanglement between the study of media and their production. While previous studies highlight the dynamic nature of identity co-construction, how and especially why speakers construct and shift their own multiple identities still remains understudied. The present study argues that identity is part of speaker communicative resources as evidenced by radio program hosts’ strategic employment and shift among their different identities to facilitate their interactional purposes. Based on data drawn from radio medical consultations, this article attempts to reveal the dynamic adaptability of hosts’ identity construction. It is found (...) that in general, hosts of medical consultation programs construct three identities for themselves, namely an authoritative expert identity, a caring friend identity and a sales representative identity; the three identities constructed are respectively adaptable to power relationships, solidarity and role relationships between hosts and callers in conversation; the three identities shift in conversations to facilitate callers’ purchasing acts. Women’s participation in community radio is critical to maintaining local interest in community development initiatives. In Northern Ghana, women have historically been excluded from the public sphere and the dialogues that lead to the transformation of their communities. Community radio presents an opportunity for rural women to participate in the public sphere. However, the use of radio listenership clubs for rural women to participate in community radio has not been thoroughly understood. This study assessed how (...) class='Hi'>radio listenership clubs help harness the participation of women in the activities of community radio stations in Northern Ghana. Five randomly selected community radio stations and a hundred randomly selected women listeners were used in a series of focus group discussions and purposive semi-structured interviews to collect data between January and May 2021. The study revealed that, through RLCs, women create content and alliances which aid the diffusion of agricultural technology, by listening to and producing their own programmes. RLCs expand women’s access to media and reduce the vulnerabilities of women in the household and village setting. We recommend the establishment of more women-focused radio listenership clubs. Die Periodisierung hilft dabei nicht nur einzelne Tendenzen des Schizoradios für die Darstellung zu unterteilen, sondern auch Unterschiede zu benennen und historisch (...) bedingte Schwerpunktverlagerungen nachzuvollziehen. The social phenomenon, marginal and claimant of the „free radios“ offering an anarchic character rediscovers quickly its proper laws of regulation which are essentially economic. At the experiences of associatives radios succeed the experiences of business radios with a very clear tendency at the concentration by the integration of the radios (...) in national networks. A review of Susan Merrill Squier's Communities of the Air - Radio Century, Radio Culture.

In diesem Buch wird eine umfassende Radiotheorie der Schizoanalyse formuliert, die auf wenig erforschten Texten, Praktiken und Archivmaterial basiert. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Relevanz der Schizoanalyse für den ästhetischen Diskurs des 20. Jahrhunderts, insbesondere im Kontext der Radiokunst. Der Autor untersucht die Positionierung dieser Theorie zwischen Theater- und Medienwissenschaften und analysiert deren Beziehung zur Geschichte und Ästhetik des Radios. Durch die Verbindung des mikropolitischen Gestenbegriffs von Deleuze und Guattari mit Konzepten des Gestischen aus dem Lehrstück und deren Verortung in einer (...) Phänomenologie der Zeit jenseits des Tragischen wird ein neuer theoretischer Rahmen geschaffen. Zudem werden bisher unbekannte auditive Objekte für die Historisierung und Kanonisierung der Radiotheorie entdeckt. Methodisch stützt sich die Arbeit auf Performanceanalyse, Medienarchäologie und Interviews mit Akteuren des Feldes. Das Buch leistet einen entscheidenden Beitrag zur Erforschung eines weitgehend unerforschten, aber zentral historisch relevanten Themas und definiert neue theoretische Konzepte für Theorie und Praxis. Der Autor Ferdinand Klüsener ist künstlerischer Leiter des Anderer Kunstverein e.V. und hat über sechzig Projekte in den Bereichen Theater, Audiowalk, Austellung und Hörspiel im professionellen Rahmen realisiert. Er promovierte an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Adorno’s phenomenological study of radio offers a sociology of music in a political and cultural context. Situating that phenomenology in the context of Adorno’s philosophical background and the world political circumstances of Adorno’s collaboration with Paul Lazarsfeld on the Princeton Radio Project, illuminates both Adorno’s Current of Music and the Dialectic of Enlightenment with Max Horkheimer and the ‘Culture Industry’. Together with an analysis of popular music in social practice/culture, this article also explores Adorno’s spatial reflections on Paul (...) Bekker’s notion of the community-building power of the symphony, including his reflection on the radio face which he elaborated in terms of both time and the physiognomics of the time-space of sound, private and communal, and adds connections with today’s Internet and related media. It argues that some of the themes of Reichenbach’s logical empiricism can be illuminated by looking at them in relation to his work as a radio engineer during and after World War One. This paper investigates the unique educational relevancy of Walter Benjamin’s radio broadcasts. While much has been written about Benjamin’s approach to both children’s literature and children’s theatre, his own pedagogical practice as a radio pedagogue remains largely marginalized in these discussions. In order to address this gap in the literature, I focus on the implications of shifting from the largely visual world of children (celebrated in color illustrations) to the auditory world of radio. Through a careful reading (...) of the radio scripts, I argue that a perceptual alteration unique to the sonic medium of radio jumpstarts historical thinking in children. The following pedagogical principles which I extract from the radio broadcasts support and enhance this mode of historical materialist education. In conclusion, the article argues for the ongoing relevancy of Benjamin for thinking through the pedagogical implications of new information technologies within a postmodern era such as podcasts. In doing so, it challenges the theoretical positions of marxist and "political economy of media" analysts who focus largely on the structure of economic and social power within the media. This paper examines the process of modelling a complex empirical phenomenon in modern astrophysics: extended extragalactic radio sources. I show that modelling is done piecemeal, addressing selected striking or puzzling features of that phenomenon separately and individually. The result is various independent and separate sub-models concerned only with limited aspects of the same phenomenon. Because the sub-models represent features of the same physical phenomenon, they need to be reasonably consistent with each other - a criterion not always fully adhered (...) to - and there needs to be a way to conceptually `re-unite' the sub-models to form an overall-model. Visualisation, that is, supplying a concrete interpretation of abstract, theoretical sub-models, aids this modelling process. My case study further endorses the view that modelling is `work in progress', i.e. a form of developing knowledge whereby models represent, not replicate, a phenomenon. (shrink)

Radio drama is often considered an incomplete or ‘blind’ artform because it creates worlds through sound alone. The charge of incompleteness, I suggest, rests upon the orthodox empiricist conception of sensation as the receipt of separate modalities of sensory impression. However, alternative theories of sensation are offered by phenomenology and—of particular importance to this study—the restructuring of cognition that takes place in these theories plays a central role in phenomenology's account of artistic expression. The significance of this phenomenological link (...) between cognition and expression is that it can provide the basis for a more positive evaluation of the aesthetics of radio drama. From a phenomenological perspective, the alleged ‘incompleteness’ of sound becomes an -exemplary form of the process whereby material elements in an artwork interact with or beckon towards one another to express a world. In this paper, I (i) show how Merleau-Ponty's ‘invitational’ account of the senses meets the charge of ‘blindness’, (ii) -demonstrate how radio drama employs the aesthetic interactions that, from the theoretical standpoints of Merleau-Ponty and Dufrenne, are definitive of expression in art, and (iii) indicate how some of my claims for the aesthetics of radio drama are supported by recent accounts of metaphor in music. Blaustein explores the phenomenon of listening to the radio play. The idea put forth by the author is that the radio play engages perception, treating the latter in a broad sense. Perception is not necessarily restricted to seeing; rather, it is understood as being cross-modal, as involving different senses. The main sense involved in the case of radio plays is hearing, which enables one to listen to the radio. Radio listeners are drawn into radio (...) plays as media of hearing. Instead of vision, listeners engage their “acousion,” a term coined by Blaustein to capture the perceptual distinctness of hearing; acousion is the auditive perception of radio plays. Listening to a radio play is a lived experience or a psychic phenomenon, precisely due to the activeness of acousion. Listeners do not only passively perceive or hear auditive data. They also engage their imaginative faculties, presenting to themselves, mentally, the world of the action; by so doing, listeners enable the act of listening. According to Blaustein, presentations, even imaginative ones, are basic. By listening to a radio play, the listener imaginatively presents the world of the action to themselves, as if they were watching a theater play. However, going beyond the realm of presentations, other factors are examined, e.g., the listener’s focus is turned into the world represented—the world within—, which is given to them via auditive data and dialogue. Whereas literature on satellites and outer space exploration has usually been dominated by vision, humankind’s initial encounter with the Earth’s first artificial satellite, Sputnik I, was overwhelmingly sonic. Tracking was originally enabled by the signal continuously transmitted by its radio beacon. Embedded in the International Geophysical Year (IGY) citizen science programs, radio amateurs played a crucial role in receiving the signal and assisting professional scientists in tracking the satellite in its initial phases. Their established existence as a distinctive (...) worldwide community of skilled operators and experimenters made hams special allies to IGY scientists and, in many respects, set them apart from other groups of amateur scientists. This essay focuses on radio amateurs’ practices and spaces of listening to Sputnik within the wider framework of the IGY. In transcending national and terrestrial boundaries, Sputnik’s signal shaped new spatialities at a variety of scales: from the macroscales of the globe and outer space to the intimate microscale of the domestic radio shack. Focusing on radio amateurs’ personal experiences and on the invisible agencies of Sputnik’s signal, the essay uses sound as a way into the sociocultural, political, and scientific importance of the IGY. Dieses Kapitel widmet sich – infolge der vorhergegangenen theoretischen Kapitel – der Diskussion von praktischen Beispielen für eine schizoanalytische Radiopraxis. Die Beispiele, oder Analysegegenstände werden in diesem Kapitel hinzugezogen, um die Radiotheorie der Schizoanalyse, die hier extrapoliert wird, aus dem Feld der Radiopraxis zu ergänzen. In der Gesamtanordnung geht es dabei nicht darum, ein irgendwie hierarchisches Verhältnis zwischen Theorie und Gegenstand herzustellen. Die ausgewählten Analysegegenstände illustrieren in diesem Sinne nicht die Theorie, sondern ergänzen vielmehr das Patchwork der schizoanalytischen Radiotheorie, die (...) hier immer wieder aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven narrativiert wird.
