Guarded by Mystery: Meaning in a Postmodern Age.David Walsh - 1999 - Cua Press.
Clearly we have entered an era of heightened interest in spirituality. The proliferation of books, music, and paraphernalia espousing the way of the spirit is a striking phenomenon. Everywhere there is a new willingness to admit that the categories of rational thought, the authority of science, are no longer adequate to the task of making sense of our lives. A search for meaning has become pervasive. Equally striking has been the rise of experiential religion. Evangelical and fundamentalist churches are the (...)

K. Yu - 2004 - Contemporary Chinese Thought 35 (4):60-75.
In December of last year, a few clowns appeared on the grand and spectacular stage of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. These clowns were the reincarnated ghosts from the Capital Red Guard West City, East City, and Haidian Districts Pickets. They viciously attacked Chairman Mao's revolutionary line, engaged in slander on the Central Cultural Revolution Group, called dear Comrade Jiang Qing names, and sabotaged the organizations under the proletarian dictatorship. They provoked violence, created chaos, searched and confiscated the possessions of (...)

  3. Deciding regular grammar logics with converse through first-order logic.Stéphane Demri & Hans De Nivelle - 2005 - Journal of Logic, Language and Information 14 (3):289-329.
We provide a simple translation of the satisfiability problem for regular grammar logics with converse into GF2, which is the intersection of the guarded fragment and the 2-variable fragment of first-order logic. The translation is theoretically interesting because it translates modal logics with certain frame conditions into first-order logic, without explicitly expressing the frame conditions. It is practically relevant because it makes it possible to use a decision procedure for the guarded fragment in order to decide regular grammar logics with (...)

This document presents Trisduction, a verification architecture for propositional truth grounded in a topological-geometric primary anchor with a mathematical seal closed to an independent mathematical co-seal: three seals on one architecture, linguistic-semantic at Part I, topological-geometric and mathematical issued simultaneously at Part II. The Root Axiom (RA) states that for any element of the universal domain, the substrate-level kinetic-actuation differential ΔE_k(x) is strictly positive. From RA atomic decomposition the framework derives a forced triaxial mapping onto three orthogonal verification axes: Formal-Structural (...)

  5. The Meyler-Fuchs Hybrid Warp Drive.Nicholas Meyler - manuscript
This paper introduces the Meyler-Fuchs Hybrid Warp Drive (MFHD), a finite, positive-energy, subluminal warp metric built on a toroidal plasma shell with classical GRMHD sourcing. The design hybridizes the torsion-lowering M¨obius-parity ansatz from Meyler’s TEPWD framework with the positiveenergy, shift-based constructions of Fuchs and Lentz, enforcing strict guard inequalities that prevent closed timelike curves (CTCs) and superluminality. We then present H-MFHD, a hyperbolic-shift reformulation that replaces static shift fields with dynamically evolving potentials governed by anisotropic wave equations, ensuring causal propagation (...)

A Christian approach to scholarship, directed by the central biblical motive of creation, fall and redemption and guided by the theoretical idea that God subjected all of creation to His Law-Word, delimiting and determining the cohering diversity we experience within reality, in principle safe-guards those in the grip of this ultimate commitment and theoretical orientation from absolutizing or deifying anything within creation. In this article my over-all approach is focused on the one-sided legacy of mathematics, starting with Pythagorean arithmeticism (...)

    Fragments of first-order logic.Ian Pratt-Hartmann - 2023 - Oxford: Oxford University Press.
A sentence of first-order logic is satisfiable if it is true in some structure, and finitely satisfiable if it is true in some finite structure. The question arises as to whether there exists an algorithm for determining whether a given formula of first-order logic is satisfiable, or indeed finitely satisfiable. This question was answered negatively in 1936 by Church and Turing (for satisfiability) and in 1950 by Trakhtenbrot (for finite satisfiability). In contrast, the satisfiability and finite satisfiability problems are algorithmically solvable (...)

The debate has now been going on for more than five years. In spite of extensive and numerous attempts at resolving the controversy, the case seems far from being settled. The aim of this paper is to provide an updated account of the debate, by identifying empirical (...)

Hartman's quandary: Reconciling pluralism and realism for virtue ethics in business.Nisigandha Bhuyan & Arunima Chakraborty - 2022 - Business Ethics, the Environment and Responsibility 32 (1):226-235.
There is considerable consensus on the idea that Aristotelian virtue ethics advocates moral realism. In numerous works, the well-known business ethicist Edwin Hartman grapples with reconciling the unitary vision of life that a particular kind of moral realism advocates and the pluralist respect for diverse cultures and belief systems that comprise our world. This paper closely follows Hartman's efforts to reconcile his liberal values with his guarded support for Aristotelian moral realism. We argue that the realist interpretation of Aristotle's function (...)

  12. Careful, Physicalists: Mind–Body Supervenience Can Be Too Superduper.Joseph A. Baltimore - 2012 - Theoria 79 (1):8-21.
It has become evident that mind–body supervenience, as merely specifying a covariance between mental and physical properties, is consistent with clearly non-physicalist views of the mental, such as emergentism. Consequently, there is a push in the physicalist camp for an ontologically more robust supervenience, a “superdupervenience,” that ensures that properties supervening on physical properties are physicalistically acceptable. Jessica Wilson claims that supervenience is made superduper by Condition on Causal Powers (CCP): each individual causal power associated with a supervenient property is (...)

After over a century of total neglect, the philosophy of Thomas Reid has attracted increasing interest over the past several decades. A new scholarly edition of Reid’s works is underway, with two volumes already available. Even more important than such scholarship is the fact that contemporary philosophers too numerous to list are finding in Reid’s philosophy substantial material useful for their own work in epistemology, philosophy of mind, ethics, and action theory. This book is a welcome addition to the growing (...)

It is not the traditional surveillance society in which government officials follow citizens around because they are concerned about threats to the political order. Instead it is piecemeal surveillance by public and private organizations. Piecemeal though it is, It creates the potential for the old kind of surveillance on an even grander scale. The (...)

“The Thirties”: here this term has nothing to do with ragtime, long-nosed Bugattis, or Maurice Chevalier. The expression instead designates the period in Europe in which three types of power emerged that, despite numerous and important differences, have one thing in common: the claim to destroy the economic, political and spiritual order by which Europe recognized itself and replace it with a “new order.” It is necessary, truthfully speaking, that we agree to extend what we call “the Thirties” a bit (...)

Faithful DNA replication and accurate chromosome segregation are the key machineries of genetic transmission. Disruption of these processes represents a hallmark of cancer and often results from loss of tumor suppressors. PTEN is an important tumor suppressor that is frequently mutated or deleted in human cancer. Loss of PTEN has been associated with aneuploidy and poor prognosis in cancer patients. In mice, Pten deletion or mutation drives genomic instability and tumor development. PTEN deficiency induces DNA replication stress, confers stress tolerance, (...)
