Si le concept husserlien de passivité a fasciné toute une génération de philosophes (Merleau-Ponty, Landgrebe, Levinas, Henry), il a rarement fait l'objet d'une étude qui adopte la perspective du fondateur de la phénoménologie. Sa célébrité a comme masqué sa spécificité, créant une sorte de doctrine officielle de la passivité qui a, en fin de compte, peu de choses à voir avec la pensée et les intentions de Husserl. En effet, là où les phénoménologues contemporains voient dans la passivité la zone (...) d'ombre où le programme d'une phénoménologie transcendantale et subjective s'effondrerait, Husserl considère, de son côté, qu'elle appartient sans reste à la sphère de la constitution et qu'elle consolide par conséquent son transcendantalisme. Loin d'être un domaine de sens irréductible à la rationalité, elle représente même le fondement des opérations de la pensée catégoriale. C'est en son sein que doivent être cherchées les « sources » des formes supérieures de la logique. Toute passive et préconsciente qu'elle soit, l'expérience antéprédicative appartient sans reste pour Husserl au sujet transcendantal et ne le destitue donc pas de sa position centrale et primordiale. Ce travail s'attache ainsi à suivre cette genèse du catégorial à partir de l'expérience passive et à montrer qu'elle entre dans le projet général, qui a été toujours celui de Husserl, d'asseoir la phénoménologie transcendantale sur le socle originaire de l'expérience du monde. Contemporary ecology and phenomenology share a critical impulse to move beyond the dualism between human beings and the world. Mikel Dufrenne’s work participates in this effort by positing Nature as the originary ground preceding both subject and object. Through the human being’s affec­tive and sensible affinity with the world, this anterior and difficult-to-conceive Nature is disclosed as the common source of both poles. Dufrenne not only theorizes this ontological background, but also sees in it the foundation for a transformation of (...) our ethical and aesthetic relation to nature. His concept of “affinity” plays a pivotal role in articulating an ecophenomenology capable of overcoming ontological dualism without abandoning phenomenological rigor. However, Dufrenne’s speculative move toward a Nature conceived as infinite and inexhaustible raises important questions in light of contemporary ecological thought. Can a philosophy grounded in an unbounded generative power respond adequately to the finitude of ecological systems and the plan­etary limits we now confront? This article revisits Dufrenne’s philosophy of Nature in order to assess its relevance—and its limits—for an ecophenome­nology attuned to both ontological depth and ecological urgency. (shrink)

Si la réforme projetée du droit de la responsabilité civile dans son dernier état n’innove guère en maintenant l’opposition de principe entre les responsabilités civiles contractuelle et extracontractuelle, elle rompt toutefois avec le droit positif en consacrant non seulement une option de responsabilité pour la victime d’un dommage corporel mais aussi une action subsidiaire pour les tiers au contrat victimes de sa mauvaise exécution, ce qui conduit, dans les faits, à limiter considérablement l’intérêt de la distinction entre les deux ordres (...) de responsabilité. L’édiction de règles communes aux deux modèles de responsabilité semble corroborer plus encore l’affaiblissement du principe de la distinction qui est pourtant loin d’avoir dit son dernier mot, comme en atteste une analyse minutieuse des textes proposés par les réformateurs. In this article, we wish to clarify the way of being and appearing of ambiences. This is achieved, first of all, by distinguishing them from lived experiences on the one hand, and external things, on the other; then, by making the hypothesis of a third mode of being which comes from what stands between the subjects and the objects and which belongs to neither one nor the other. Finally, our proposal aims at showing that if atmospheres are properties of situations (...) even before subjects feel them, then they feel them anyway only as these intrinsic and presubjective properties. Loin de désigner la manière dont nous ressentons les situations variables de notre expérience, les ambiances expriment les qualités expres­sives et tonales de ces situations. Ainsi, du point de vue d’une écophénomé­nologie des ambiances, il est absolument inutile de distinguer apparaître en soi et apparaître pour nous, de poser, avant l’apparition d’une phénoména­lité subjective d’une conscience, une phénoménalité asubjective du monde, puisque, dans la manifestation de toute ambiance, ces distinctions n’ont plus court.

I examine the role played in Schürmann’s philosophy by the notion of epoch. This means showing on one side that his critique of the philosophy of history begins from a particular conception of history centered on the demise of the hegemonies, and on the other that this ultimate epoch of history itself escapes the history of hegemonies. This demonstration puts in question the ontological paradigm of the contingent, the anarchic foundation of tragic philosophy.

In this article, we’ll be looking to see if any landscape has an ambience. In doing so, we first highlight what in the landscape is opposed to ambience, namely detachment and distance, and then indicate that it is thanks to this detachment that the viewer’s participation in the landscape is possible as ambience. In this way, we attempt to show that any landscape, taken in an narrow aesthetic sense, implies a complementary double operation of withdrawal and fusion, contemplation and atmosphere, (...) but that it cannot be totally identified with an atmosphere, however holistic it may be. Against a backdrop of transformations in the employment market, career changes are on the rise. This paper explores the subject’s experience of this transition, seen as an « in-between » situation. It highlights the need for support during this transition. The professional position adopted by support workers who use the biographical narrative is presented here as that of a craftsman, working alongside the person receiving support to construct the meaning of their life story.

Notre article reprend la distinction du milieu et de l’ambiance qu’avait étudiée en son temps Leo Spitzer. Il vise à accentuer la différence entre une conception objectiviste de l’environnement et une conception qui laisse place à la résonance affective de ce qui nous entoure. L’ambiance est un milieu rendu sensible par sa présence affective et influente. Pour ce faire, notre travail questionne le concept de « médiance » d’Augustin Berque qui prétend réformer le concept trop physicaliste et déterministe de milieu (...) et en montre néanmoins les limites, en plaidant pour une médialité ambiancielle qui se serait définitivement détachée des références à la structure sujet-objet et à l’idée d’un conditionnement psycho-physique du milieu. Dans cet article, nous tentons de clarifier le statut ontologique des ambiances. Car si, bien souvent, leur description ne pose pas de problèmes majeurs, leur interprétation philosophique donne lieu à des divergences de vue. Pour ce faire, nous comparons les ambiances d’un côté avec les vécus, de l’autre avec des choses et concluons à leur nature indépendante. Ce qui nous autorise à postuler un troisième genre d’être et à comprendre comment les ambiances peuvent exister dès lors sans lien direct avec (...) des sujets et des objets. This article compares Jean-Luc Marion and Bruce Bégout through a shared question: how can phenomenology be freed from its historical confinement within objecthood and theory of knowledge? It argues that, despite the absence of any direct dialogue, both thinkers seek to describe phenomena irreducible to intentional constitution, and both turn to aesthetic experience as a privileged model. Their paths nevertheless diverge. Marion interprets saturated phenomena as a reversal of intentionality, whereas Bégout moves further upstream and thinks mersion as a pre-intentional (...) mode of appearing prior to the split between subject and world. The article therefore opposes saturation and mersion, signification and expression, and the gifted and the intoned subject. It concludes that Bégout does not simply refute Marion but radicalizes his project by relocating phenomenality before relation itself. (shrink)

The early 2000s saw a wave of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of new urate-lowering therapies (ULTs) used in the management of gout. These trials compared the novel medications with placebo or relatively low doses of allopurinol. In 2016, Shmerling raised concerns about the design of these trials, advocating for more ethical gout trials that “i) limit enrolment to individuals with gout refractory to appropriately dosed conventional therapies, ii) eliminate placebo arms, iii) routinely provide anti-inflammatory prophylaxis to reduce (...) gout flares, and iv) allow appropriate up-titration of urate-lowering treatments in comparator arms.” In this viewpoint, we revisit ethical principles and standards for contemporary phase III and IV ULT clinical trials. Bruce Bégout (born in 1967) is one of the most original figures in contemporary French phenomenology. Both writer and philosopher, he first evokes diverse “ambiances” in his literary work before advancing a phenomenology in which “air” is the primary medium of experience and sense of smell the privileged access to ambiance. In Le concept d’ambiance: Essai d’éco-phénoménologie [The concept of ambiance: Essay in eco-phenomenology], he distinguishes three ways of approaching such phenomena—dialogical, synthetic, and autochthonous—and adopts the autochthonous stance, which treats (...) ambiance as an autonomous, a priori, atmospheric field felt rather than seen. I first summarize these distinctions, and then situate his own autochthonous, from-within account within the phenomenology of atmosphere, showing how it reframes rationality by treating some objects of knowledge as inherently ambiguous and resistant to objectification. Finally, I argue that, for Bégout, “ambient sense of smell” (flair ambianciel), as a function of breathing, discloses the tone of situations more immediately than vision—clarifying why the air we co-breathe grounds our primary experience of ambiance. En avril 2024, la Faculté des Lettres de l'Université de Coimbra et son département de philosophie ont eu l'honneur d'accueillir le philosophe Bruce Bégout. La visite de Bruce Bégout, figure de proue de la philosophie contemporaine, a été organisée avec le soutien de l'Unité de recherche - Centro de Estudos Clássicos e Humanísticos ainsi que du Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra (CAPC) et de l'ANOZERO – Bienal de Arte Contemporânea de Coimbra. Pendant son séjour à Coimbra, Bruce Bégout a (...) présenté une importante conférence intitulée « Climat et Ambiance. Réflexions sur l'influence de ce qui nous environne ». Dans le prolongement de cet événement, le philosophe a généreusement accepté de nous accorder une interview. Nous la présentons dans les pages suivantes, témoignant ainsi de notre admiration pour un projet philosophique vigoureux, original et protéiforme qui nous fait sans cesse réfléchir. (shrink)

Cet article vise à réfléchir au concept d’ambiance et à sa relation avec les phénomènes psychopathologiques, en revisitant l’interprétation de l’œuvre d’Eugène Minkowski par Bruce Bégout. Il s’agit de démontrer comment les ambiances représentent un élément constitutif de la vie, indissociable de la structure vécue du trouble mental, ainsi que des relations et orientations qui constituent la recherche et l’intervention médicales contemporaines. Dans ce sens, nous explorerons l’espace « mersive » des ambiances et leur relation avec « l’espace de la (...) nuit », en parcourant la dynamique des ambiances dans l’intégration de l’espace et du temps vécus, pour ensuite analyser la dépression comme une possible « perturbation de l’ambiance ». Notre objectif ultime sera d’établir la « dimension ambiencielle » comme prérequis à une science « ample » et « humaine ». (shrink)

Segundo Bruce Bégout, são as análises minuciosas de Biran sobre o tema da afetividade e das tonalidades afetivas que merecem ser consideradas no contexto do debate contemporâneo em torno do tema das atmosferas. No entanto, a leitura de Bégout neste contexto é crítica em relação à abordagem de Biran. (...) Neste texto, gostaria de discutir este ponto específico e argumentar que, no âmbito do biranismo, o tema das atmosferas não é fácil de classificar. (shrink)

This paper explores the importance of hope as a determining factor for patients to participate in first-in-human trials for synthetic biology therapies. This paper focuses on different aspects of hope in the context of human health and well-being and explores the varieties of hope expressed by patients. The research findings are based on interview data collected from stable gout and diabetes patients. Three concepts of hope have emerged from the interviews: hope as certainty ; hope as reflective uncertainty ; (...) hope as self-therapy. The purpose of the paper is twofold. First, it aims to underline the significance of hope in patients’ medical decision-making, as well as the beneficence of hope for patients’ well-being, and for progress in research. Second, it shows how philosophical investigations—in particular Descartes—explore the phenomenon of hope and provide medical empirical research with profitable insights and tools. (shrink)
