Moral circles represent the figurative boundaries that distinguish the human and non-human entities that are considered to have moral worth from the entities that are considered to lack moral worth. The extent to which individuals have wide-reaching boundaries is referred to as moral expansiveness. Investigations into the psychological processes that underlie moral circle decision-making and moral expansiveness are only just beginning. Through two studies, we investigated the mediating role of moral emotions as a potential mechanism linking individual differences in moral (...) expansiveness with pro-environmental outcomes. In Study 1, anger mediated the link between moral expansiveness and pro-environmental behavioural intentions. We replicated and extended this finding in Study 2 using two culturally distinct samples (the United States and Japan). Unlike anger, the mediating effect of disgust depended on the culture and specific form of moral judgment. The mediating effect of disgust was significant only in the United States and in relation to pro-environmental and prosocial decision-making for in-groups. Together, these findings provide some of the first evidence of the psychological mechanisms linking moral expansiveness to subsequent pro-environmental decision-making and highlight anger as a crucial emotional component. As a continuation of ideas initiated in [19], we study bi-colored (generic) expansions of geometric theories in the style of the Fraïssé–Hrushovski construction method. Here we examine that the properties $NTP_{2}$, strongness, $NSOP_{1}$, and simplicity can be transferred to the expansions. As a consequence, while the corresponding bi-colored expansion of a red non-principal ultraproduct of p-adic fields is $NTP_{2}$, the expansion of algebraically closed fields with generic automorphism is a simple theory. An algebraically expandable (AE) class is a class of algebraic structures axiomatizable by sentences of the form $\forall \exists! \mathop{\boldsymbol {\bigwedge }}\limits p = q$. For a logic L algebraized by a quasivariety $\mathcal {Q}$ we show that the AE-subclasses of $\mathcal {Q}$ correspond to certain natural expansions of L, which we call algebraic expansions. These turn out to be a special case of the expansions by implicit connectives studied by X. Caicedo. We proceed to characterize all the AE-subclasses of (...) abelian $\ell $ -groups and perfect MV-algebras, thus fully describing the algebraic expansions of their associated logics. (shrink)

Induced by intake of the psychedelic substances LSD, psilocybin, DMT and mescaline, psychedelic experiences have been extensively described by subjects as entailing a most unusual increase in the scope and quality of their consciousness. Accordingly, psychedelic experiences have been widely characterised as an “expansion of consciousness.” This article poses the following question, as yet unaddressed in contemporary philosophy and the tradition of phenomenology: to what exactly does “expansion of consciousness” refer as a general characterisation of psychedelic experiences, and (...) what role might attention play therein? On the basis of Aron Gurwitsch’s phenomenology of attention, the following thesis is presented: (a) “expansion of consciousness” refers to a particular restructuration of consciousness in psychedelic experiences. (b) This occurs by means of certain extreme transformations in direction, scope, mode and degree of attention. In order to explicate this thesis, the characteristic features of psychedelic experiences that pertain to expansion of consciousness and attention are first systematically identified from a survey of subject reports. Second, it is demonstrated that the few previous attempts to understand expansion of consciousness in terms of attention as a filter/reducing-valve, spotlight or zoom-lens each fail to explain how consciousness is structured in psychedelic experiences. Third, it is argued that psychedelic expansion of consciousness is a general restructuration of consciousness by means of extreme attentional transformations. In conclusion, brief consideration is given to the question of whether psychedelic expansion of consciousness can have epistemic and ethical value for life. (shrink)

We show in particular that the theory of the ordered field of real numbers augmented by all restricted analytic functions and all real power functions admits elimination of quantifiers and has a universal axiomatization. We derive that every function of one variable definable in this structure, not ultimately identically 0, is asymptotic at + ∞ to a real function of the form x (...) cxr, c ≠ 0; in particular, this structure is polynomially bounded. This paper proposes a new Separabilist account of thick concepts, called the Expansion View (or EV). According to EV, thick concepts are expanded contents of thin terms. An expanded content is, roughly, the semantic content of a predicate along with modifiers. Although EV is a form of Separabilism, it is distinct from the only kind of Separabilism discussed in the literature, and it has many features that Inseparabilists want from an account of thick concepts. EV can also give non-cognitivists (...) a novel escape from the Anti-Disentangling Argument. §I explains the approach of all previous Separabilists, and argues that there’s no reason for Separabilists to take this approach. §II explains EV. §III fends off objections. This paper examines how alternative forms of organising integration in resource-scarce environments expand across settings, by considering the role of local embeddedness and an ethic of care in enabling this expansion. It builds on theories of imitation in organization studies in combination with theories of ethics of care and bricolage applied to welfare and migration studies. The paper is informed by the case of Yalla Trappan, a work cooperative of immigrant women in the city of Malmö, Sweden, and the (...) attempts to diffuse this organization and its methods to other cities in the country. The findings indicate that the expansion of alternative forms of integration into resource-scarce contexts is enabled by simultaneous practices of imitation and bricolage, ingrained in an ethic of care. The article shows, first, how many important practices were developed by imitating accounts of the original ideas, through a broadcasting mode of imitation. Next, it explains why the local translation of these practices in resource-scarce contexts, consisting of ‘bricolage work’ based on material, market, institutional, human, and cultural elements, was necessary. The conclusion is that the expansion of novel forms of integration requires imitation, but of a kind that involves the bricolage of local translations. Such bricolage is always collective (which does not diminish the importance of individual agency), multi-spatial and not just local, and wrapped in an ethic of care, rather than in an economic logic. The article concludes by discussing the implications of these findings with the ethics of migration. (shrink)

Our main result states that (Z,+,0,R) is superstable whenever R is enumerated by a regular sequence. We give two proofs of this result. One relies on a result of E. Casanovas and M. This paper is a contribution toward developing a theory of expansions of semi-Heyting algebras. It grew out of an attempt to settle a conjecture we had made in 1987. Firstly, we unify and extend strikingly similar results of [ 48 ] and [ 50 ] to the (new) equational class DHMSH of dually hemimorphic semi-Heyting algebras, or to its subvariety BDQDSH of blended dual quasi-De Morgan semi-Heyting algebras, thus settling the conjecture. Secondly, we give a criterion for a unary (...) class='Hi'>expansion of semi-Heyting algebras to be a discriminator variety and give an algorithm to produce discriminator varieties. We then apply the criterion to exhibit an increasing sequence of discriminator subvarieties of BDQDSH . We also use it to prove that the variety DQSSH of dually quasi-Stone semi- Heyting algebras is a discriminator variety. Thirdly, we investigate a binary expansion of semi-Heyting algebras, namely the variety DblSH of double semi-Heyting algebras by characterizing its simples, and use the characterization to present an increasing sequence of discriminator subvarieties of DblSH . Finally, we apply these results to give bases for “small” subvarieties of BDQDSH , DQSSH , and DblSH. (shrink)

Expansion into Eastern European markets has been a key strategy of the world’s major tobacco companies. This paper explores the tactics used by the companies in furthering that goal, reports on the reactions of the host country governments, and addresses some of the ethical questions that are raised.

For centuries, the processes of social differentiation associated with Modernity have often been thought to intensify the need for site-specific forms of role training and knowledge production, threatening the university’s survival either through fragmentation or through failure to adapt. Other lines of argument emphasize the extent to which the Modern system creates and relies on an integrated knowledge system, but most of the literature stresses functional differentiation and putative threats to the university. And yet over this period the university has (...) flourished. In our view, this seeming paradox is explained by the fact that modern society rests as much on universalistic cosmological bases as it does on differentiation. The university expands over recent centuries because – as it has from its religious origins – it casts cultural and human materials in universalistic terms. Our view helps explain empirical phenomena that confound standard accounts: the university’s extraordinary expansion and global diffusion, its curricular and structural isomorphism, and its relatively unified structure. All of this holds increasingly true after World War II, as national state societies made up of citizens are increasingly embedded in a world society constituted of empowered individuals. The redefinition of society in global and individual terms reduces nationally bounded models of nature and culture, extends the pool of university beneficiaries and investigators, and empowers the human persons who are understood to root it all. The changes intensify universalization and the university’s rate of worldwide growth. For the university’s knowledge and “knowers,” and for the pedagogy that joins them together, the implications are many. The emerging societal context intensifies longstanding processes of cultural rationalization and ontological elaboration, yielding great expansions in what can and should be known, and in who can and should know. These changes in turn alter the menu of approved techniques for joining knowledge and knower as one. The “knowledge society” that results is distinguished by the extraordinary degree to which the university is linked to society. But it is also distinguished by the degree to which society is organized around the university’s abstracted and universalized understandings of the world and its degree-certified graduates. (shrink)

We also show that Truss' condition guarantees the existence of a countable structure consisting of automorphisms ofMwhich can be considered as an atomic model of some theory naturally associated toM. The exponential expansion of per capita incomes over the last centuries in tech driven economies like that of the U.S. is the most recent in a long series of social creations marked by one or another exponential expansion. The origins of the deep attraction to these enhancements are found in the evolutionary heritage of our expanded cognitive and affective capacities. These evolved capacities have always marked the exponentially rising learning curve in the rapid language acquisition of young humans. (...) They have also played a role in the emergence of religion as an explanation scaffolding from our context of origin onwards. After the exodus from our context of origin into larger and larger populations, they helped shape the emergence of the inflated ascriptive inequality that grew as individuals struggled to find a framework to make and assess status claims at these larger social scales. Among many other changes, the exponential expansion of per capita income averages over the last centuries in economies that first embraced systematic technological innovation and diffusion provided an alternative material enhancement for status differentiation throughout a population. The contrasting labor-saving and disruption costs of this fourth enhancement have played a role in the remarkably steady pattern of a multi-century per capita growth rate average in the U.S. of just under 2% per year. We study invariant local expansion operators for conflict-free and admissible sets in Abstract Argumentation Frameworks (AFs). Such operators are directly applied on AFs, and are invariant with respect to a chosen ‘semantics’ (that is, w.r.t. each of the conflict-free/admissible sets of arguments). Accordingly, we derive a definition of robustness for AFs in terms of the number of times such operators can be applied without producing any change in the chosen semantics.

The argument is made that the rapid pace of change in digital technology and its accelerated dissemination leaves modern individuals with no choice but to master, “tame,” and employ these technologies in communicative practice for the benefit of collective progress. It is shown that the expansion of communication means, linked to the challenges of digitalization, interacts with traditional issues such as indoctrination, political manipulation, and information warfare, provoking new difficulties in finding relevant methods and formats for engaging individuals. It (...) is argued that life in a world radically transformed by digital technologies requires the development of a range of competencies that allow individuals to take advantage of the opportunities and avoid the pitfalls associated with functioning in a digital environment. The ability to be creative is often considered a unique characteristic of conscious beings and many efforts have been directed at demonstrating a relationship between creativity and the personality construct of psychoticism. The present study sought to investigate this link explicitly by focusing on discrete facets of creative cognition, namely the originality/novelty dimension and the practicality/usefulness dimension. Based on Eysenck’s conceptualisation of psychoticism as being characterised by an overinclusive cognitive style, it was expected that higher levels of psychoticism would accompany (...) a greater degree of conceptual expansion and elevated levels of originality in creative imagery, but would be unrelated to the practicality/usefulness of an idea. These hypotheses were confirmed in 80 healthy participants who were contrasted based on their EPQ psychoticism scale scores. Our findings suggest that the link between psychoticism and creativity is based on associative thinking and broader but weak top-down activation patterns rather than on goal-related thinking. The new paradigm in cosmology identifies information as the fundamental element of the universe. This concept is beautifully illustrated in Dr. Jude Currivan’s book, The Cosmic Hologram: In-formation at the Center of Creation (Currivan, 2017). The book presents a novel approach to visualizing information as the building block of reality and its evolution throughout time. This discovery has been in the making for millennia, drawing upon ancient philosophy and early scientific endeavors throughout history. In the Western philosophical tradition, one of (...) the most significant schools of thought was Stoicism. Stoicism comprises three interconnected parts: Physics, which addresses the nature, structure, and laws of the universe alongside aspects of psychology; Logic, which deals with language, epistemology, and our understanding of the world; and Ethics, the most well-known component, which emphasizes living a good life through virtue and aligning oneself with nature and reason (Durand et al., 2023). Among these three components, physics has been largely discredited by modern science and most contemporary philosophers, leading to a greater emphasis on ethics, which aligns well with the values of Western secular societies and shares similar traits with some Eastern philosophical traditions. This paper revisits the key concepts of the neglected Stoic physics to highlight its relevance and contribution to the evolution of modern scientific discoveries in cosmology. We will explore how this philosophical school, influenced by Plato’s academia and the Socratic method, established a practical and intuitive cosmological system. This made Stoicism one of the most influential philosophical schools in Western history, and as we will demonstrate, it contained the original informational elements necessary for modern science to develop its current understanding of the universe. Therefore, we will trace the entropic evolution of Stoic Cosmogony3 as a crucial contributor to the successes of science, as it can be clearly applied to the latest theories in cosmology. I will also argue that popular attempts to update Stoicism by disregarding aspects of the philosophy's orthodoxy that, on the surface, seem antiquated and false, miss the mark entirely and are ironic, considering the Stoic discipline of managing impressions so as not to act impulsively. I would advise the authors of such ideas to be more Stoic. (shrink)

We present a theory that copes with the dynamics of inconsistent information. A method is set forth to represent possibly inconsistent information by a finite state. Next, finite operations for expansion and contraction of finite states are given. No extra-logical element — a choice function or an ordering over (sets of) sentences — is presupposed in the definition of contraction. Moreover, expansion and contraction are each other's duals. AGM-style characterizations of these operations follow.

The extension of the rule of industrial property over living organisms and their components – genes and cells, both human and non-human – since the end of the 1970s, has gone along with the emergence of new markets in science, biotechnology and in health. The article argues that the filing of patents to protect private claims on living matter is a development which promotes the establishment of a monopoly control over inventions (...) in the fields of medicine and agronomy, while at the same time fostering a restriction in exchanges within the scientific community. The article therefore argues the case for a declaration that genomes, human and non-human, be considered as a common good, in terms both of the research carried out for the improvement of plants and health and of the accessibility of the medical innovations resulting from such research. We study groups definable in tame expansions of ω-stable theories. Assuming several tameness conditions, we obtain structural theorems for groups definable and interpretable in these expansions. As our main example, by characterizing independence in the pair, where K is an algebraically closed field and G is a multiplicative subgroup of K× with the Mann property, we show that the pair satisfies the assumptions. In particular, this provides a characterization of definable and interpretable groups in in terms of algebraic groups in (...) K and interpretable groups in G. (Such sequences always exist under some reasonable extra assumptions on ℜ, in particular, if ℜ is exponentially bounded or if the language is countable.) Then (ℜ, (S)) is d-minimal, where S ranges over all subsets of cartesian powers of the range of φ.

We investigate expansions of Heyting algebras in possession of a unary term describing the filters that correspond to congruences. Hasimoto proved that Heyting algebras equipped with finitely many normal operators have such a term, generalising a standard construction on finite-type boolean algebras with operators. We utilise Hasimoto’s technique, extending the existence condition to a larger class of EHAs and some classes of double-Heyting algebras. Such a term allows us to characterise varieties with equationally definable principal congruences using a single equation. (...) Moreover, in the presence of a dual pseudocomplement operation, discriminator varieties are characterised by a pair of equations. We also prove that a variety of dually pseudocomplemented EHAs with a normal filter term is semisimple if and only if it is a discriminator variety. This generalises two known results, one by Kowalski and Kracht for finite-type varieties of BAOs, and the other by the present author for dually pseudocomplemented Heyting algebras without additional operations. Extending the zengcheng kaifangfa 增乘開方法 for square and cube roots, Jia Xian 賈憲 (11th cent.) introduced the triangle for binomial expansions, or binomial coefficients for extractions of nth roots. Using tianyuanshu 天元術 and the zengcheng kaifangfa for polynomial equations in thirteenth-century China, the theory of equations became the most important development in the history of Chinese mathematics. Interpolations by difference sequences were introduced in the Shoushili 授時曆 (1281). Zhu Shijie 朱世傑 completed the Suanxue qimeng 算學啓蒙 (1299) and Siyuan yujian 四元玉鑑 (...) (1303). In the latter, he showed that the triangle for binomial expansions gives rise to the fundamental structures for solving equations and the theory of finite series. Along with these, we discuss the contributions to the theory of equations and finite series in Joseon 朝鮮 (1392–1910) Korea. We deal with the contributions of Hong Jeong-ha 洪正夏 (1684–1727) in his Gu-il jib 九一集 (1713–1724) and then those of Lee Sang-hyeog 李尙爀 (b. 1810) in his Igsan 翼算 (1868). (shrink)

The standard inferential scheme of traditional assertoric syllogistic, based on the initial chapters of Aristotle’s Prior Analytics, employs single-premissed deductions, i.e., principles of immediate inference, in the reduction of imperfect valid moods to perfect moods. G. W. Leibniz (among others) has attempted to replace this scheme with his own version of syllogistic reduction (the core of which is, again, based on Aristotle’s observations on syllogistic transformation), in which the principles of immediate inference themselves are modelled as (and hence justified by (...) means of) valid syllogisms. This paper examines the place of this modelling, i.e. syllogistic expansion, of immediate inferences in Leibniz’s scheme of syllogistic reduction (which he describes in his Nouveaux Essais and presents in one of his papers on syllogistic), and shows through this examination that the tenability of the whole scheme actually hinges on the interpretation to be given for the categorical propositional forms. Expansive body posture is the most commonly studied and widely described in psychological literature. For many years, expansive posture was universally identified as a pose of power, but more recent research has revealed that the link between expansive posture and power may be moderated by gender, culture or even contextual cues. Our findings show that with little variation added to expansive posture it does not necessarily lead to the sense of power, and may actually trigger the opposite effect: a feeling (...) of submissiveness. In three studies, persons assuming their body in a standing-at-attention posture were perceived as being more obedient (Experiment 1), thus participants who expanded their body in a standing-at-attention manner (although actually doing a non-obedient unrelated task) displayed greater compliance to requests (Experiment 2) and declared greater submissiveness toward social norms (Experiment 3). We discuss how the cultural and interpersonal context imprinted in specific body posture can modify the feedback of innate and universal body states. (shrink)

This paper seeks to address two key questions: (1) What is core to consequentialism? and (2) How might consequentialism best be expanded beyond its core commitments? A dizzying variety of consequentialist theories have been proposed in recent years—maximizing, satisficing, or scalar; restrictive, sophisticated, or subjective; global or local; agent-neutral or agent-relative; welfarist, recursive, or violation-minimizing. Through critically exploring these various options, I will dispute two dogmas of contemporary consequentialism: that there’s nothing more to blameworthiness than the question whether it would (...) promote value to express blame, and that the only normative question that arises regarding one’s character (or motive, or decision procedure) is whether it promotes value. One may be a consequentialist—a utilitarian, even—about action, while taking other normative resources to be essential for explaining our moral lives more broadly. I thus argue for a new expanded view, Fitting Consequentialism, that is richer than the extant views on offer. (shrink)

Epistemology should take seriously the possibility of rationally evaluable changes in conceptual resources. Epistemic decision theory compares belief states in terms of epistemic value. But it's standardly restricted to belief states that don't differ in their conceptual resources. I argue that epistemic decision theory should be generalized to make belief states with differing concepts comparable. I characterize some possible constraints on epistemic utility functions. Traditionally, the epistemic utility of a total belief state has been understood as a function of the (...) epistemic utility of individual (partial) beliefs. The most natural ways of generalizing this account generate a kind of repugnant conclusion. I characterize some possible alternatives, reflecting different epistemic norms. (shrink)

We develop a probabilistic criterion for belief expansion that is sensitive to the degree of contextual fit of the new information to our belief set as well as to the reliability of our information source. We contrast our approach with the success postulate in AGM-style belief revision and show how the idealizations in our approach can be relaxed by invoking Bayesian-Network models.

The university is in a state of crisis. This crisis has both quantitative and qualitative, or structural, aspects. Additionally, there are predicaments unique to Japanese universities as well as difficulties being faced by universities worldwide. The main focus of this paper is to explain the dire situation that contemporary Japanese universities are confronting and to suggest ways to overcome it. However, it will also touch upon the broader crisis facing universities in the 21st century.

We study a variant of converses of the Banach fixed point theorem and its connection to tameness in expansions of a real closed field. An expansion of a real closed ordered field is said to have the Banach fixed point property when, for every locally closed definable set E$E$, if every definable contraction on E$E$ has a fixed point, then E$E$ is closed. Let R$\mathfrak {R}$ be an expansion of a real closed field. We prove that if R$\mathfrak (...) {R}$ has an o‐minimal open core, then it has the Banach fixed point property; and if R$\mathfrak {R}$ is definably complete and has the Banach fixed point property, then it has a locally o‐minimal open core. The Expanse does not provide an easy answer to the vexing question on making a decision when competing, but considering conflicts of values on the show can help us reason about tough choices in real life. Sometimes, scientific progress conflicts with the prudential value of self-preservation. This chapter explains three ways of understanding value conflicts: as situations in which every option is forbidden, situations in which every option is permissible, or situations in which some options are obligatory and some options (...) are forbidden. The idea that all these different kinds of value can be traded with a common currency is tempting. But contra Keats, beauty is not truth; and it certainly is not goodness, as Tolstoy says. Epistemic, moral, prudential, and aesthetic values are very different. (shrink)

ABSTRACT This paper is concerned with the civic significance and cultivation of three constructs that involve different ways of having an expansive and virtuous concern for others. Identification with all humanity involves caring for an expansive domain of others, identifying with humanity generally and not just with one’s ingroup. Others-centeredness involves caring about others to an expansive extent, putting others’ interests ahead of one’s own. Last, the virtues of intellectual dependability involve caring for an expansive range of others’ goods, including (...) their intellectual goods. Our aims are to explain the nature of these traits in further detail, to present evidence of their relationship to certain kinds of civic engagement, and to identify strategies for cultivating them and educating for them.
