This article examines how emerging technologies – particularly artificial intelligence – disrupt the moral and institutional foundations of contemporary military practice. While strategic documents from the United States, NATO, and other major actors anticipate profound institutional transformation driven by AI, their treatment of ethics largely confines itself to legal compliance and technical safeguards, leaving the ethical role of military leadership in managing disruptive change underexamined. Drawing on Seumas Miller’s distinction between social institutions that are merely instrumental to collective goods and (...) those whose defining ends are constitutive of such goods, the article argues that the military belongs to the latter category. Because the military’s core function – defending the sovereignty of a polity – is itself morally significant, technological disruption of its organizational structures simultaneously constitutes ethical disruption. The article thus reconceives change management during periods of technological transition as calling for a specific kind of military prudence, a practical wisdom exercised within and through the institution’s role-mediated ethical practices. By analyzing three concrete modes of techno-moral disruption, the article shows how AI may reshape ethical standards, redistribute professional knowledge, and alter organizational ethos, and why navigating these transformations responsibly is a central task of military virtue. Cognitive scientific explanations can take either a mechanistic or design perspective. Some recent philosophical works propose to apply the mechanistic perspective to the influential mental file framework. The design perspective, however, remains underexplored. This paper takes on this task, arguing that mental files have been designed by natural selection to efficiently represent property cluster structures in the environment—such as objects and kinds—to facilitate our learning about them. This paper discusses the semantically parenthetical use of clauseembedding verbs such as see, hear, think, believe, discover and know. When embedding verbs are used in this way, the embedded clause carries the main point of the utterance, while the main clause serves some discourse function. Frequently, this function is evidential, with the parenthetical verb carrying information about the source and reliability of the embedded claim, or about the speaker’s emotional orientation to it. Philosophers of science have variously tried to characterize how-possibly explanations (HPEs) and distinguish them from how-actually explanations (HAEs). I argue that existing contributions to this debate have failed to pay attention to the different, but complementary, functions possibilities play in scientific explanations. To bring these functions to the fore, I introduce a distinction between what I call elucidating and embedding HPEs. While elucidating HPEs specify and demonstrate possible processes for a given research target, embedding HPEs demonstrate how the (...) research target fits into a space of suitably constrained possibilities. I specify both functions of HPE with reference to two case studies from origins-of-life research. I contrast my distinction with an alternative proposal by Wirling and Grüne-Yanoff (2024) to highlight that focusing on the functions, rather than types, of possibilities in explanation is better suited to account for key scientific practices. This paper introduces a universal Meta-Language framework that integrates human, mathematical, programming, and animal languages across time. Each linguistic unit (word) is modeled as a topological knot with a fingerprint and an associated Seifert surface, embedded within a cryptographically committed graph. Using zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs), we demonstrate that every word either reaches a designated conceptual region or faces extinction. Leveraging Zeckendorf's theorem, we establish that embedding matrices derived from Seifert surfaces can be uniquely represented in Fibonacci dimensions, providing a (...) structured and scalable growth pattern for semantic embeddings. Hahn’s embedding theorem asserts that linearly ordered abelian groups embed in some lexicographic product of real groups. Hahn’s theorem is generalized to a class of residuated semigroups in this paper, namely, to odd involutive commutative residuated chains which possess only finitely many idempotent elements. Clinical ethics committees support ethical decision-making in healthcare. In the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), their adoption is growing, but factors shaping implementation and daily functioning remain underexplored. Development has been uneven, and little is known about what drives it. This qualitative study examined influences on committee adoption, implementation, and routine practice. Semi structured expert interviews were conducted with committee representatives and researchers, then analysed using thematic qualitative text analysis in MAXQDA, identifying six key themes. The adoption is driven by (...) bottom-up and top-down initiatives, external pioneers, societal debates, certification demands, and resources. Efficient implementation relied on leadership, protected time and funding, committee member role clarity, and visibility through early activities. Everyday functioning depended on member motivation, clinician acceptance, staffing, training, networking, and regulatory and cultural factors. Evaluation of their activities was frequently emphasized but often constrained by limited resources. Legal and regulatory requirements were also debated: mandates could promote establishment but risk tokenism, making softer mechanisms preferable. Future directions emphasized professionalization, billing options, care integration, organizational models, and systematic evaluation. Sustainable, high-quality committee functioning requires coordinated action across policy and institutional levels, alongside clinician engagement and evaluation capacity. These empirically grounded insights provide practical strategies for managers and policymakers to strengthen clinical ethics infrastructure in the DACH context. (shrink)

Personal Information Management Systems (PIMS) aim to facilitate the sharing of personal information and protect privacy. Efforts to enhance privacy management, aligned with established privacy policies, have led to guidelines for integrating transparent notices and meaningful choices within these systems. Although discussions have revolved around the design of privacy-friendly systems that comply with legal requirements, there has been relatively limited philosophical discourse on incorporating the value of privacy into these systems. Exploring the connection between privacy and personal autonomy illuminates the (...) instrumental value of privacy and highlights the importance of intentionally embedding the value of privacy into these systems. To translate the value of privacy into concrete design requirements, this study constructs a values hierarchy consisting of values, norms, and design requirements. After analyzing the relationships between privacy and autonomy and identifying norms, the design requirements translated from the norms associated with the components of personal autonomy are specified at the lowest layer. These requirements include a design to prevent unauthorized access and dark patterns and to provide effective and efficient notices and choices. The findings contribute to expanding the requirements for designing the aspect of privacy as a legal requirement to incorporate the value of privacy into systems. (shrink)

This study examines whether embedding predicates’ semantic type affects the acceptability of internally headed relative clauses (IHRCs) in Korean. Existing studies on Korean IHRCs have primarily focused on their highly limited distribution, employing three research approaches to understand their restricted use: (i) explaining their formal restrictions using a set of rules; (ii) describing how they are used with naturally occurring data; (iii) refuting their existence as an independent construction in Korean by providing alternative explanations for how the interpretation of (...) IHRCs is construed. Although these approaches have significantly enhanced the understanding of the use of IHRCs in Korean, whether a specific semantic type of embedding predicates renders an IHRC construal in a more acceptable manner has not been explored. To address this research gap, we conducted an acceptability judgment task. The results showed significantly higher acceptability, compared to the control condition, for predicates implying physical contact between entities but not for those that do not. This finding may indicate that Korean IHRCs serve as an example of a partially productive or verb-class-specific construction. This study contributes to the understanding of partial productivity or local generalization in language use and the interaction between a human and an object. (shrink)

Nursing is characterized by ethical complexity, emotional intensity, and relational asymmetry. While bioethics is often included in nursing curricula, it is frequently taught in a fragmented or purely normative manner, leaving students insufficiently prepared to interpret and inhabit the moral dimensions of care. To describe a three-year educational pathway in Medical Humanities, philosophical anthropology, and bioethics developed for pediatric nursing students at the University of Genoa – Istituto Giannina Gaslini, and to explore the ethical themes articulated by students. The structure (...) of the program, which integrated philosophical anthropology, ethics of care and vulnerability, narrative practices, and dialogical pedagogy, was outlined. A thematic analysis was conducted on students’ written reflections which were presented at a public conference at the end of the program. Students’ reflections reveal the emergence of a coherent ethical sensibility structured around key themes: embodied care, vulnerability as a shared human condition, relational presence, the moral significance of everyday clinical gestures, and the integration of technology within caring relationships. The educational experience fostered reflective depth, interpretive sensitivity, and an understanding of ethics as lived moral practice rather than abstract rule application. An integrated, humanistic approach to bioethics education can meaningfully contribute to the formation of pediatric nurses capable of ethical presence, moral judgment, and relational responsibility. Students can be helped to cultivate an ethically attuned professional identity responsive to vulnerability and care. (shrink)

We prove two embedding and extension theorems in the context of the constructive theory of metric spaces. The first states that Cantor space embeds in any inhabited complete separable metric space (CSM) without isolated points, X, in such a way that every sequentially continuous function from Cantor space to ℤ extends to a sequentially continuous function from X to ℝ. The second asserts an analogous property for Baire space relative to any inhabited locally non‐compact CSM. Both results rely on (...) having careful constructive formulations of the concepts involved.As a first application, we derive new relationships between “continuity principles” asserting that all functions between specified metric spaces are pointwise continuous. In particular, we give conditions that imply the failure of the continuity principle “all functions from X to ℝ are continuous”, when X is an inhabited CSM without isolated points, and when X is an inhabited locally non‐compact CSM. One situation in which the latter case applies is in models based on “domain realizability”, in which the failure of the continuity principle for any inhabited locally non‐compact CSM, X, generalizes a result previously obtained by Escardó and Streicher in the special case X = C[0, 1].As a second application, we show that, when the notion of inhabited complete separable metric space without isolated points is interpreted in a recursion‐theoretic setting, then, for any such space X, there exists a Banach‐Mazur computable function from X to the computable real numbers that is not Markov computable. The emergence of ethical concerns surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) has led to an explosion of high-level ethical principles being published by a wide range of public and private organizations. However, there is a need to consider how AI developers can be practically assisted to anticipate, identify and address ethical issues regarding AI technologies. This is particularly important in the development of AI intended for healthcare settings, where applications will often interact directly with patients in various states of vulnerability. In this (...) paper, we propose that an ‘embedded ethics’ approach, in which ethicists and developers together address ethical issues via an iterative and continuous process from the outset of development, could be an effective means of integrating robust ethical considerations into the practical development of medical AI. We generalize two classical results on cylindric algebra to certain expansions of cylindric algebras where the extra operations are defined via first order formulas. The first result is the Neat Embedding Theorem of Henkin and the second is Monk's classical non-finitizability result of the class of representable algebras. As a corollary we obtain known classical results of Johnson and Biro published in the Journal of Symbolic logic.

This article contributes to the discussion on how transformative and Indigenous paradigms can be incorporated into policy and practice. It shows how these paradigms can be meaningfully integrated into the design and delivery of education programmes to ensure that interventions are not only technically effective but also relational, participatory, and emancipatory, especially in contexts characterised by historical marginalisation and structural inequality. Using the dual lenses of Mertens’ Six Steps for Transformative Research and Chilisa’s Eight Rs of Indigenous Inquiry, this article (...) examines the South African Kha Ri Gude (Tshivenda for “Let Us Learn”) Literacy Campaign as a national example that embodies these principles. Delivered in all 12 official South African languages, including South African Sign Language, the campaign reached over 4.7 million adults through a decentralised, community-based model delivered by approximately 40,000 volunteers. Drawing on my experience as CEO of the campaign, this article presents a praxis-oriented reflection on the potential of transformative and Indigenous paradigms for implementing large-scale education interventions that achieve both redress and epistemic justice. This article affirms that embedding these paradigms from inception to evaluation can help realise a project’s transformative potential. (shrink)

Knowledge graphs entity typing aims to predict the potential types to an entity, that is,. Recently, several embedding models are proposed for KG entity types prediction according to the existing typing information of the tuples in KGs. However, most of them unreasonably assume that all existing entity typing instances in KGs are completely correct, which ignore the nonnegligible entity type noises and may lead to potential errors for the downstream tasks. To address this problem, we propose ConfE, a novel (...) confidence-aware embedding approach for modeling the tuples, which takes tuple confidence into consideration for learning better embeddings. Specifically, we learn the embeddings of entities and entity types in separate entity space and entity type space since they are different objects in KGs. We utilize an asymmetric matrix to specify the interaction of their embeddings and incorporate the tuple confidence as well. To make the tuple confidence more universal, we consider only the internal structural information in existing KGs. We evaluate our model on two tasks, including entity type noise detection and entity type prediction. The extensive experimental results in two public benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed model outperforms all baselines on all tasks, which verify the effectiveness of ConfE in learning better embeddings on noisy KGs. Explanations in genetics have intriguing aspects to both biologists and philosophers, and there is no account that satisfactorily elucidates such explanations. The aim of this article is to analyze the kind of explanations usually given in Classical (Transmission) Genetics (CG) and to present in detail the application of an account of explanation as ampliative, specialized nomological embedding to elucidate the such explanations. First, we present explanations in CG in the classical format of inferences with the explanans as the premises (...) and the explanandum as the conclusion and compare them with explanations in other paradigmatic explanatory fields such as Classical Mechanics. Second, we summarize the main aspects discussed in the literature with regard the peculiarities of genetic explanations. Third, we introduce the account of scientific explanation as ampliative, specialized nomological embedding making use of Sneedian structuralism, in particular the notions of theory-net, fundamental law or guiding principle, specialization, and special laws. Finally, we apply this account to the case of CG and show that this analysis sheds light to the intriguing aspects of genetic explanations and remove most of their alleged oddities. (shrink)

Situated approaches to affectivity overcome an outdated individualistic perspective on emotions by emphasizing the role embodiment and environment play in affective dynamics. Yet, accounts which provide the conceptual toolbox for analyses in the philosophy of emotions do not go far enough. Their focus falls (a) on the present situation, abstracting from the broader historico-cultural context, and (b) on adopting a largely functionalist approach by conceiving of emotions and the environment as resources to be regulated or scaffolds to be used. In (...) this paper, I argue that we need totake situatedness seriously: We need (a) to acknowledge that emotions are not situated in undetermined “contexts” but in concrete socio-culturally specific practices referring to forms of living; and (b) to agree that not only are context and emotionsusedfor the sake of something else but also that the meaning-disclosive dimension of affective intentionality is structured by situatedness as well. To do so, I offer a multidimensional approach to situatedness that integrates the biographical and cultural dimensions of contextualization within the analysis of situated affective dynamics. This approach suggests that humans affectively disclose meaning (together) which is at once product and producer of specific forms of living – and these are always already subjects of (politically relevant) critique. Multiplex networks have been widely used in information diffusion, social networks, transport, and biology multiomics. They contain multiple types of relations between nodes, in which each type of the relation is intuitively modeled as one layer. In the real world, the formation of a type of relations may only depend on some attribute elements of nodes. Most existing multiplex network embedding methods only focus on intralayer and interlayer structural information while neglecting this dependence between node attributes and the topology (...) of each layer. Attributes that are irrelevant to the network structure could affect the embedding quality of multiplex networks. To address this problem, we propose a novel multiplex network embedding model with high-order node dependence, called HMNE. HMNE simultaneously considers three properties: intralayer high-order proximity of nodes, interlayer dependence in respect of nodes, and the dependence between node attributes and the topology of each layer. In the intralayer embedding phase, we present a symmetric graph convolution-deconvolution model to embed high-order proximity information as the intralayer embedding of nodes in an unsupervised manner. In the interlayer embedding phase, we estimate the local structural complementarity of nodes as an embedding constraint of interlayer dependence. Through these two phases, we can achieve the disentangled representation of node attributes, which can be treated as fined-grained semantic dependence on the topology of each layer. In the restructure phase of node attributes, we perform a linear fusion of attribute disentangled representations for each node as a reconstruction of original attributes. Extensive experiments have been conducted on six real-world networks. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in cross-domain link prediction and shared community detection tasks. (shrink)

Given the recent interest in the fragment of system $\mathbf{F}$ where universal instantiation is restricted to atomic formulas, a fragment nowadays named system ${\mathbf{F}}_{\textbf{at}}$, we study directly in system $\mathbf{F}$ new conversions whose purpose is to enforce that restriction. We show some benefits of these new atomization conversions: they help achieving strict simulation of proof reduction by means of the Russell–Prawitz embedding of $\textbf{IPC}$ into system $\mathbf{F}$, they are not stronger than a certain ‘dinaturality’ conversion known to generate a (...) consistent equality of proofs, they provide the bridge between the Russell–Prawitz embedding and another translation, due to the authors, of $\textbf{IPC}$ directly into system ${\mathbf{F}}_{\textbf{at}}$ and they give means for explaining why the Russell–Prawitz translation achieves strict simulation whereas the translation into ${\mathbf{F}}_{\textbf{at}}$ does not. It is meaningful for a researcher to find some proper collaborators in complex academic tasks. Academic collaborator recommendation models are always based on the network embedding of academic collaborator networks. Most of them focus on the network structure, text information, and the combination of them. The latent semantic relationships exist according to the text information of nodes in the academic collaborator network. However, these relationships are often ignored, which implies the similarity of the researchers. How to capture the latent (...) semantic relationships among researchers in the academic collaborator network is a challenge. In this paper, we propose a content-enhanced network embedding model for academic collaborator recommendation, namely, CNEacR. We build a content-enhanced academic collaborator network based on the weighted text representation of each researcher. The content-enhanced academic collaborator network contains intrinsic collaboration relationships and latent semantic relationships. Firstly, the weighted text representation of each researcher is obtained according to its text information. Secondly, a content-enhanced academic collaborator network is built via the similarity of the weighted text representation of researchers and intrinsic collaboration relationships. Thirdly, each researcher is represented as a latent vector using network representation learning. Finally, top- k similar researchers are recommended for each target researcher. Experiment results on the real-world datasets show that CNEacR achieves better performance than academic collaborator recommendation baselines. (shrink)

Public companies in the US stock market must annually report their activities and financial performances to the SEC by filing the so-called 10-K form. Recent studies have demonstrated that changes in the textual content of the corporate annual filing can convey strong signals of companies’ future returns. In this study, we combine natural language processing techniques and network science to introduce a novel 10-K-based network, named Lazy Network, that leverages year-on-year changes in companies’ 10-Ks detected using a neural network (...) class='Hi'>embedding model. The Lazy Network aims to capture textual changes derived from financial or economic changes on the equity market. Leveraging the Lazy Network, we present a novel investment strategy that attempts to select the least disrupted and stable companies by capturing the peripheries of the Lazy Network. We show that this strategy earns statistically significant risk-adjusted excess returns. Specifically, the proposed portfolios yield up to 95 basis points in monthly five-factor alphas, outperforming similar strategies in the literature. (shrink)

We follow along the line of research begun with the pioneering work Maksimova and Rybakov (1974) which has initiated comparative analysis of the lattices of normal extensions of S4 and of intermediate logics. Grounding on the Gödel–McKinsey–Tarski embedding, for any S4-logic, we define the notion of $$\tau $$ τ -decomposition and that of a modal component of the logic. Then, we investigate conditions, when a modal logic has its least modal component.

The number of scientific publications is growing exponentially. Research articles cite other work for various reasons and, therefore, have been studied extensively to associate documents. It is argued that not all references carry the same level of importance. It is essential to understand the reason for citation, called citation intent or function. Text information can contribute well if new natural language processing techniques are applied to capture the context of text data. In this paper, we have used contextualized word (...) class='Hi'>embedding to find the numerical representation of text features. We further investigated the performance of various machine-learning techniques on the numerical representation of text. The performance of each of the classifiers was evaluated on two state-of-the-art datasets containing the text features. In the case of the unbalanced dataset, we observed that the linear Support Vector Machine achieved 86% accuracy for the “background” class, where the training was extensive. For the rest of the classes, including “motivation,” “extension,” and “future,” the machine was trained on less than 100 records; therefore, the accuracy was only 57 to 64%. In the case of a balanced dataset, each of the classes has the same accuracy as trained on the same size of training data. Overall, SVM performed best on both of the datasets, followed by the stochastic gradient descent classifier; therefore, SVM can produce good results as text classification on top of contextual word embedding. In recent years, many face image feature extraction and dimensional reduction algorithms have been proposed for linear and nonlinear data, such as local-based graph embedding algorithms or fuzzy set algorithms. However, the aforementioned algorithms are not very effective for face images because they are always affected by overlaps and sparsity points in the database. To solve the problems, a new and effective dimensional reduction method for face recognition is proposed—sparse graph embedding with the fuzzy set for image classification. (...) The aim of this algorithm is to construct two new fuzzy Laplacian scattering matrices by using the local graph embedding and fuzzy k-nearest neighbor. Finally, the optimal discriminative sparse projection matrix is obtained by adding elastic network regression. Experimental results and analysis indicate that the proposed algorithm is more effective than other algorithms in the UCI wine dataset and ORL, Yale, and AR standard face databases. (shrink)

This paper concerns the proper definition of embeddings in purely category-theoretical terms. It is argued that plain category theory cannot capture what, in the general case, constitutes an embedding of one structure in another. We discuss three available solutions to this problem: variants of monics, concrete categories, and allegories. The first and last of these are found to be unable to solve the problem, and the second to be philosophically unsatisfactory. Instead, we introduce a theory of forms and relators, (...) which, like allegory theory, attempts to abstract from relation algebras in the way that categories abstract from monoids, but which does not have the shortcomings we have identified in allegories. Based on data from interviews with CSR and HR professionals, this paper discusses possibilities for embedding corporate social responsibility (CSR) into human resource management (HRM). It examines how employee-related aspects can be addressed under the remit of CSR and how such interfaces work. Further, it argues that although HRM is responsible for employee issues such as diversity, equality, work-life balance, CSR has some implications for HRM. Thus, CSR helps to embed the social and ethical concerns of employees within HRM (...) policies and practices and promotes socially responsible HRM. However, such a relationship is subject to CSR-related variables, such as the scope of CSR and variation among industries. Multinational companies (MNCs) can have positive and negative impacts on the human rights situation of a country. More and more MNCs have made a commitment to respect human rights. So far, little research has been done on how MNCs can embed their commitment and which factors determine its success. This paper therefore aims to describe and learn from the process of embedding human rights in six subsidiaries of the multinational oil company Royal Dutch Shell (in short, Shell), operating in (...) different parts of the world. The paper contains a conceptual proposal, its key idea being that the successful functioning of a rule embedding artifact designed to regulate a practice (not pertaining to its use) produces the same result as the successful performance of the rule-invoking non-communicative actions belonging to the practice in case.

The goal of this paper is to encourage participants in the debate about the locus of cognition (e.g., extended mind vs embedded mind) to turn their attention to noteworthy anthropological and sociological considerations typically (but not uniquely) arising from transhumanist and posthumanist research. Such considerations, we claim, promise to potentially give us a way out of the stalemate in which such a debate has fallen. A secondary goal of this paper is to impress trans and post-humanistically inclined readers to embrace (...) (or at least seriously reflect on) the extended mind thesis as a potential gamechanger to the state of play in their own debates. We start off (Sect. 1) by reviewing two crucial ideas (homo faber and plasticity of the body schema) that are instrumental in setting up the dispute between extended and embedded. We then summarise (Sect. 2), the stalemate between these two competing accounts of cognition, and review some of the dialectics underlying it. In Sect. 3, to get out of the stalemate, we propose to focus on a series of important anthropological and sociological considerations derived from and related to trans and posthumanist research. In doing so, we claim (Sect. 4) that an extended approach to cognition becomes anthropologically preferable and morally as well as socially more desirable than an embedded one. (shrink)

Many modern theories of indicative conditionals treat them as restricted epistemic necessity modals. This view, however, faces two problems. First, indicative conditionals do not behave like necessity modals in embedded contexts, e.g., under ‘might’ and ‘probably’: in these contexts, conditionals do not contribute a universal quantification over epistemic possibilities. Second, when we assess the probability of a conditional, we do not assess how likely it is that the consequent is epistemically necessary given the antecedent. I propose a semantics which solves (...) both problems, while still accounting for the data that motivated the necessity modal view. The account is based on the idea that the semantics of conditionals involves only a restriction of the relevant epistemic state, and no quantification over epistemic possibilities. The relevant quantification is contributed by an attitude parameter in the semantics, which is shifted by epistemic modals. If the conditional is asserted, the designated attitude is acceptance, which contributes a universal quantification, producing the effect of a restricted necessity modal. (shrink)

The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the semantic relation between continental drift and plate tectonics. The numerous attempts to account for this case in either Kuhnian or Lakatosian terms have been convincingly dismissed by Rachel Laudan, who nevertheless acknowledged that there was not yet a plausible alternative to explain the so called “geological revolution”. Several decades later, the epistemological side of this revolution has received much attention, while the semantic relation between drift theory and plate tectonics has remained (...) mainly unexplored. In studying this case under a new light, the notion of embedding, as distinguished from other sorts of intertheoretical relations :11–27, 2011), will have a particular significance. After formally analyzing the relationship between continental drift and plate tectonics, it will become evident that the models of drift theory are part of the models of plate tectonics, thereby fulfilling the conditions for embedding. All theoretical concepts from drift theory are presupposed in some theoretical concepts from plate tectonics, and all empirical concepts of the former are shared by the latter. Furthermore, all the successful paradigmatic applications of continental drift are also successful applications of plate tectonics. As a consequence, under the label “geological revolution”, we actually find a salient historical case of cumulative progress across theory change. (shrink)

Creativity has long been understood as individual talent, exceptional ability, or the result of momentary innovation. Yet the most enduring forms of creation throughout history cannot be fully explained through inspiration alone. Creation has continued through structures capable of sustaining, deepening, and repeatedly reproducing creative production across time. This paper introduces Expertise-Embedded Architecture (EEA) as a judgment architecture for sustained creative production. EEA structures the generative conditions through which human creativity, intention, and judgment continue to operate across individuals, organizations, and (...) time. Within this framework, creativity is approached as something that emerges prior to formal language or systems. Human beings first sense creation, respond to it emotionally, and bring it into reality through intention. Through repeated acts of execution, thought gradually becomes structured, judgment develops recurring patterns, and intention acquires directionality. This accumulated continuity forms what this paper describes as founding thought and founding spirit. To sustain this continuity within organizations, this paper presents Brand DNA Architecture as a causal generative structure composed of Spirit, Ideology, Purpose, Vision, Role, and Mission. Brand DNA Architecture is approached as a generative mechanism through which creative intention continuously develops into organizational judgment, execution, and expansion. EEA functions as an architecture through which these generative structures become embedded into organizations in repeatable and sustainable forms. Human beings remain the origin of creativity, intention, and responsibility. Within EEA, AI operates as a structural alignment mechanism that supports the directional continuity of creative and organizational flows. Ultimately, this paper proposes that sustainable human creativity continues through structures capable of preserving directionality while allowing continuous generation across time. In this sense, EEA presents a framework through which human creative spirit may persist, expand, and contribute to civilization beyond individuals alone. (shrink)

This paper argues that we need to re-think the semantics/pragmatics distinction in the light of new evidence from embedding of irony. This raises a new version of the old problem of ‘embedded implicatures’. I argue that embedded irony isn’t fully explained by solutions proposed for other embedded implicatures. I first consider two strategies: weak pragmatics and strong pragmatics. These explain embedded irony as truth-conditional content. However, by trying to shoehorn irony into said-content, they raise problems of their own. I (...) conclude by considering how a modified Gricean model can explain that irony embeds qua implicature. This leads us to prefer a local implicature model. This has important consequences for how we draw the semantics/pragmatics distinction. (shrink)

In recent years, business ethics and economic scholars have been paying greater attention to the development of commons organizing. The latter refers to the processes by which communities of people work in common in the pursuit of the common good. In turn, this promotes commons organizational designs based on collective forms of common goods production, distribution, management and ownership. In this paper, we build on two main literature streams: the ethical approach based on the theory of the common good of (...) the firm in virtue ethics and the economic approach based on the theory of institutions for collective action developed by Ostrom’s research on common-pool resources to avert the tragedy of the commons. The latter expands to include the novel concepts of new commons, “commoning” and polycentric governance. Drawing on the analysis of what is new in these forms of organizing, we propose a comprehensive model, highlighting the integration of two sets of organizing principles—common good and collective action – and five problem-solving processes to explain the main dimensions of commons organizing. We contribute to business ethics literature by exploring the convergence between the ethical and economic approaches in the development of a commons organizing view. (shrink)

In this work, we put forth the observation that some V2 languages are sensitive to the category of the XP moved in first position, only in cases of embedded V2, but not in main clause V2. This shows: a) that embedded V2 can be different from main clause V2 and b) that different types of XPs do not undergo the same restrictions when moving to the left periphery. We propose an analysis of these differences in terms of relativized minimality.

Expressivism faces four distinct problems when evaluative sentences are embedded in unassertive contexts like: If lying is wrong, getting someone to lie is wrong, Lying is wrong, so Getting someone to lie is wrong. The initial problem is to show that expressivism is compatible with - being valid. The basic problem is for expressivists to explain why evaluative instances of modus ponens are valid. The deeper problem is to explain why a particular argument like - is valid. The deepest problem (...) is to explain the meanings of evaluative conditionals like . Expressivists can solve the initial and basic problems simply by acknowledging that evaluative sentences have minimal truth aptness, but the deeper and deepest problems require more. The deepest problem cannot be solved even with the semantics of Gibbard and Blackburn, as is shown by an extension of Dreier’s hiyo argument. (shrink)

We use imperatives to refute a naïve analysis of update potentials (force-operators attaching to sentences), arguing for a dynamic analysis of imperative force as restrictable, directed, and embeddable. We propose a dynamic, non-modal analysis of conditional imperatives, as a counterpoint to static, modal analyses. Our analysis retains Kratzer's analysis of if-clauses as restrictors of some operator, but avoids typing it as a generalized quantifier over worlds (against her), instead as a dynamic force operator. Arguments for a restrictor treatment (but against (...) a quantificational treatment) are mustered, and we propose a novel analysis of update on conditional imperatives (and an independently motivated revision of the standard ordering-semantics for root modals that makes use of it). Finally, we argue that imperative force is embeddable under an operation much like dynamic conjunction. (shrink)

ABSTRACTWide-ranging semantic flexibility is often considered a magic cure for contextualism to account for all kinds of troubling data. In particular, it seems to offer a way to account for our intuitions regarding embedded perspectival sentences. As has been pointed out by Lasersohn [2009. “Relative Truth, Speaker Commitment, and Control of Implicit Arguments.” Synthese 166 : 359â374], however, the semantic flexibility does not present a remedy for all kinds of embeddings. In particular, it seems ineffective when it comes to embeddings (...) under operators with truth evaluative adverbs such as ‘correctly believes that’ and ‘incorrectly believes that’ and under factive verbs. This paper takes a closer look at the problematic embedding data with respect to predicates of personal taste. It argues that there is indeed no semantic solution for contextualism but a pragmatic way out. (shrink)

Neural population activity in sensory cortex is organized on low-dimensional manifolds, but it is unclear why such manifolds should arise and what determines their geometry. We address this sensory representation problem by modeling cortical populations as recurrent circuits driven by low-dimensional, regular sensory dynamics (e.g. motion on a circle, head direction, multi-frequency tones on tori). By combining tools from generalized synchronization and delay-embedding theory, specialized to this quasiperiodic regime, we show that contracting recurrent networks generically develop smooth internal manifolds (...) that embed the sensory dynamics. The dimensional requirement is modest and depends only on the intrinsic dimension d of the effective sensory manifold, not on the complexity of the external world: a hidden dimension N>2d suffices (e.g. N≥3 for a circle, N≥5 for a two-frequency torus; bounds compatible with Whitney and Takens' embedding theorems). -/- We then prove a prediction–separation result that links representational geometry directly to predictive performance, without assuming knowledge of contraction rates: if the circuit can predict future sensory inputs with small error, then states with different futures must be separated in neural state space, up to a resolution set by the prediction error. The resulting scale-limited embeddings naturally give rise to categorical boundaries, metameric equivalence of distinct stimuli, and discrimination thresholds. -/- Numerical experiments with trained tanh recurrent networks driven by head-direction-like and multi-frequency signals recover ring- and torus-shaped hidden manifolds with the expected topology; state separation improves sharply when N crosses the 2d+1 threshold. Training typically pushes the networks beyond the strict contraction regime where the theory guarantees faithful embedding, yet convergence consistent with generalized synchronization and manifold recovery persist, indicating that our conditions are sufficient but not necessary. -/- Together, these results provide a mechanistic account of why low-dimensional sensory manifolds emerge in recurrent circuits and how prediction constrains their resolution, grounded in dynamical systems embedding theory and consistent with empirical findings on cortical population dynamics. Altruism and solidarity are concepts that are closely related to organ donation for transplantation. On the one hand, they are typically used for encouraging people to donate. On the other hand, they also underpin the regulations in force in each country to different extents. They are often used indistinctly and equivocally, despite the different ethical implications of each concept. This paper aims to clarify to what extent we can speak of altruism and solidarity in the predominant models of organ donation. (...) It also raises the ethical question of whether these categories are adequate as a basis for such models, bearing in mind that organs are a scarce resource and that a shortage of them may mean that fewer lives are saved or improved. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize public health surveillance by analyzing large datasets to detect outbreaks. However, privacy, consent, and governance issues persist. While the International Health Regulations do not explicitly mention the use of AI in infectious disease surveillance, transparent processes, accountability, and public trust are key for responsibly integrating AI in pandemic preparedness.

Organizations such as the EU High-Level Expert Group on AI and the IEEE have recently formulated ethical principles and (moral) values that should be adhered to in the design and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI). These include respect for autonomy, non-maleficence, fairness, transparency, explainability, and accountability. But how can we ensure and verify that an AI system actually respects these values? To help answer this question, I propose an account for determining when an AI system can be said to embody (...) certain values. This account understands embodied values as the result of design activities intended to embed those values in such systems. AI systems are here understood as a special kind of sociotechnical system that, like traditional sociotechnical systems, are composed of technical artifacts, human agents, and institutions but—in addition—contain artificial agents and certain technical norms that regulate interactions between artificial agents and other elements of the system. The specific challenges and opportunities of embedding values in AI systems are discussed, and some lessons for better embedding values in AI systems are drawn. (shrink)

A full separation theorem for the derivable rules of intuitionistic linear logic without bounds, 0 and exponentials is proved. Several structural consequences of this theorem for subreducts of (commutative) residuated lattices are obtained. The theorem is then extended to the logic LR + and its proof is extended to obtain the finite embeddability property for the class of square increasing residuated lattices.
