Parents have an influence on the formation of their children’s mate preferences. This research conducted two studies to test the relationship between parents’ education level and the gender role characteristics of ideal mate for college students, and the moderating role of urban-rural residence on this relationship. In study 1, 1,033 participants reported their explicit attitude toward gender role characteristics for an ideal mate via the Chinese Sex Role Inventory-50. In study 2, we recruited 130 participants and used an implicit association (...) test to measure their implicit attitude. Regression-based analyses showed that the higher education level of parents was significantly associated with female students’ mate preferences with high-femininity but low-masculinity traits. For male students, the higher education level of parents was associated with their explicit preferences of mates with high-masculinity but low-femininity traits. The significant moderating effect of urban-rural residence was observed in explicit preference, with the different patterns in gender groups. In conclusion, parents with higher educational attainment might bring up children who are more likely to embrace a partner with non-traditional gender roles. (shrink)

It offers a brief review of a few theoretical and empirical research projects which have had some influence on the 2003 reform of the course of Ideology and Morality. It describes: three basic principles behind this new curriculum, focusing on the developing lives of students; curriculum characteristics with ideological, (...) humanistic, practical and integrative dimensions; and the objectives of developing feelings, attitudes and value orientations, competencies and knowledge. The curriculum is illustrated by four textbook and class‐based examples of respect for parents, self‐esteem, environmental awareness and being a responsible citizen, which offer some insights into contemporary moral education with distinctive Chinese characteristics. Finally, the paper gives an overview of the significance of the moral education curriculum reform and of its ongoing challenges. (shrink)

This article suggests that reading Zhou Dunyi’s 周敦頤 Explanation to the Diagram of Supreme Polarity synchronously instead of diachronically yields a new understanding on the relatedness between infinitude and finitude, or on the One and many. Zhou’s attitude is introduced as a living riddle, in which “Non-Polar and Supreme Polarity” is understood as a new conceptual construct, and one which is issued as a call for action at the end of the text: it is a call to investigate the beginnings (...) and endings of one’s life. In this way, the text demonstrates how a person embodies the cosmological as riddle. The article follows both the diagram and text. It first refers to the riddle, then moves on to its embodiment in the ongoing processes of living as yin-yang 陰陽, the five phases, qian 乾 and kun 坤, and the myriad things, including human beings. According to the approach presented here, it is the sage who is the human embodiment of “Non-Polar and Supreme Polarity.”. (shrink)

This article problematizes the way of thinking schooling in discourse of sign system, which involves opposition, and double gesture of inclusion/exclusion. Drawing on two fundamental texts of Taoism, the Tao Te Ching and Chuang Tzu, this article puts forward the seemingly passive Non-Word and Non-Self to resist the hierarchy ordering of conceptions and man, and to undo duality of binary opposition. It links the history of assessment and PISA to the rethinking of evidence and sign in contemporary movements. The second (...) section proposes teaching as wandering (you, 游), the transcendence into Non-Self with response to men’s natural inquiry, but not artificially manipulating and shaping man by privileging certain knowledge, value, and thoughts over other. Instead of making categories of race, gender, and normal/abnormal, Taoist provides a way of reconsider the self operating on assessing, standardizing, normalizing, correcting and predicting others in school accountability. It is built on the ontology of considering individual as belonging to an ultimate sameness, the oneness. The article concludes with underlying assumption that students are subjected to change, and their difference must be eliminated through standard test. It further questions tactics of reason that educational reform face in the current regime of school accountability. (shrink)

This paper proposes the ontological foundation of Changmyeonghak, a creative-metaphysical system that reconstructs the nature of being through the principles of creativity, spirit, and will. -/- Classical Western ontologies emphasized either rational thought (Descartes), the constructive structure of mind (Kant), the self-unfolding of Spirit (Hegel), or blind volition (Schopenhauer). East Asian traditions emphasized qi, Taiji, and cosmological emergence (Zhou Dunyi, Zhang Zai). Yet none fully explained the dynamic, energetic, and creative continuity that characterizes lived human existence. -/- Changmyeonghak introduces a (...) ‘creative ontology’ in which being is not static substance but creative flow—sensed, resonated with, willed, and enacted through the human mind system. -/- Spirit and will are interpreted as two aspects of one creative force. Wuji (無極) is reframed not as emptiness but as infinite expansion. Human existence is reconceived as participatory mediation in a continuous creative field. This paper formalizes these ideas and establishes the ontological basis for Changmyeonghak as a unified creative-metaphysical framework. (shrink)

This chapter offers an outline of how the Yijing 易經 informed interpretations of nothingness and perfection in Chinese and early modern European discourses. Part one briefly traces the priority of nothingness in the Yijing commentaries of Wang Bi 王弼 and the later Neo-Confucian dyadic dynamic of limitless nothingness (wuji 無極) and the supreme ultimate (taiji 太極). Following Song-Ming era compilations, early modern European missionaries and intellectuals interpreted the Yijing in relation to their own cosmological, metaphysical, and theological models. Part (...) two reexamines Leibniz's growing engagement with the Yijing and Chinese philosophy as a discourse on nothingness and perfection and its theological, ontological, and mathematical significance. Although Chinese influences in the formation of Leibniz's binary mathematics and first metaphysical principles of God and nothingness should not be exaggerated, they became interculturally entangled. Leibniz determined that ancient Chinese wisdom was closest to the truths of natural philosophy and theology because it conceived of the world not through matter but through the fundamental principles and dynamics of perfection and nothingness, expressed by 1 and 0. Leibniz identified his binary arithmetic, and specifically his metaphysical-theological interpretation of its meaning, with the dyadic progression of the Yijing’s hexagrams. Leibniz remained committed to a Christianizing interpretation. Since nothingness could not be generative by itself, it required a transcendent and active principle of perfection that he construed as the hidden truth of Chinese philosophy. (shrink)

A. R. Ammons's poetry demonstrates a profound engagement with oriental philosophy, particularly bearing the traces of I Ching and Dao De Jing, which informs his distinctive poetics of motion. Central to his thought is a metaphysical model grounded in the dynamic interplay among zero, one, and many—corresponding respectively to the notions of "Wuji," "Taiji" and "yin-yang" in the Chinese philosophy of changes. Beyond poetic principle, these elements structure Ammons's exploration of changes as both personal emotion and ecological existential condition, (...) forming what might be called an "E-motion" that links his inner transformation with natural movement. Through recursive patterns, Ammons constructs a poetics that affirms flux and order, offering a unique philosophical vision of poetic being, that is, the idea of change inherent with a balance between permanent change and changelessness. During the past ten years, China’s micro film industry has made a rapid development aided by technological changes. Focusing on three types of micro films, this paper reveals some characteristics of China’s micro films within socialist cultural production with Chinese characteristics. This model departs from a past when the government managed everything during the Planned Economy, but is also different from the models of cultural policy in the West. The micro films examined are A Murder Case Triggered by a Steamed (...) Bun, a parody of film Wuji, market-conspiracy micro films such asImminent and The Only Choice, and social-welfare micro films likeI will give you happiness when I grow up. All of them bring forth the issue of coordination and harmonization of conflict between social-welfare and market efficiency. (shrink)
