A Nobel prize winner, a great man and a great scientist, Erwin Schrödinger has made his mark in physics, but his eye scans a far wider horizon: here are two stimulating and discursive essays which summarize his philosophical views on the nature of the world. Schrödinger's world view, derived from the Indian writings of the Vedanta, is that there is only a single consciousness of which we are all different aspects. He admits that this view is (...) mystical and metaphysical and incapable of logical deduction. But he also insists that this is true of the belief in an external world capable of influencing the mind and of being influenced by it. From 30 May to 1 June Cornell University hosted a small conference on the nature of time, organised by the originally Viennese astro-physicists Hermann Bondi and Thomas Gold. Kurt Gödel did not attend, although roughly 15 years earlier the famous mathematician had made a significant contribution to this field.

This chapter offers an interpretation of Roger Ames' use of the field-focus ontology, tying the topic to Daoist meditation practices.

The purpose of this article is to bring to light a critical question which borders around the decolonial feminism discourse, and in so doing I unveil some salient insights which add valuable contributions to the discourse about the place of feminism in the African context. The motivating problem is the question of subordination of women in Africa. There are many reasons and questions, each deserving thorough examination that have been brought forward for the causes and possible explanations of the phenomenon. (...) The argument I seek to highlight is that cultural distortion through colonisation has led to the valorisation of narratives that perpetuate the subordination of women in Africa. One such narrative is that women are second-class citizens and that they occupy an inferior position in the social, economic and political hierarchies of our society. What will come from this article is that these narratives persist in what we would consider a postcolonial “modern” Africa where women seem to be gaining rights and tapping into spaces that foster equality owing to feminism. However, the subordination of women is still prevalent, even for the “liberated” women. The article will show why the persistence of this problem is proving difficult for the comprehension and acceptance of feminism in African contexts. (shrink)

Wang Shouren affirmed that "the teachings of the sages are nothing but the teaching of mind" (Wang Wencheng gong quanshu: Xiangshan wenji xu [Preface to the Collected Writings of Xiangshan in Complete Works of Wang Wencheng]). He believed that Lu Jiuyuan, in proposing the formulation that the mind equals principle, continued the legacy of the teaching of the mind that had begun in China with the teaching of Yao, Shun, and Yu (the three mythological emperors) and which was exemplified in (...) the saying "The human mind is always in peril; the mind of the natural Way is always hidden; emphasize essentiality, emphasize unity; maintain equinanimously the Middle Internal Path." He thought that this was the correct orthodoxy (zheng tong) passed on by Kong (Confucius), Meng (Mencius), Zhou (Dunyi), and Cheng (Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi). In Mencius's time, Mo Zi advocated reciprocal and mutual compassion (jianai) and benevolence and principledness (ren yi) and asked of people only that in their external actions they attain the goals of sacrificing themselves (literally, wearing their heads thin and tattering their heels) to benefit others. At the same time Gao Zi advocated maintaining benevolence internally and maintaining principledness externally-thus severing the internal from the external. Wang Shouren believed that the popularity of these ideas "greatly devastated the teaching of the mind," and therefore they were criticized by Mencius. When Mencius criticized them, he affirmed that "Benevolence, principledness, propriety (li), and wisdom (zhi) are all not added onto me from the outside (wai li'). I have these qualities already; it is just that I have not given thought to them" ("Gao zi," part 1, of the book Mencius). He also advocated: "There is no other principle of learning save seeking the liberating and opening of the mind (fang xin)" (ibid.). Wang Shouren felt that this meant that Mencius had already proposed the idea that "the mind equals principle"; that Mencius taught that the principles of benevolence, principledness, propriety, and wisdom were nothing but the mind as it already was; that he advocated that the method of learning should not be restricted to seeking an exhaustive understanding of principles from without but should instead be "an inward search in the mind." Wang then believed that when Lu Jiuyuan advocated the idea of "the mind equals principle" he was precisely and directly following through with this fundamental idea of Mencius! When some people thought that Lu Jiuyuan's ideas were different from those of Zhu Xi and "derogated Lu as Chan" i.e., as a form of Buddhist dhyana, or meditation theory, Wang believed, they were entirely ignorant of the actual circumstances of Lu Jiuyuan's writing and merely followed the rumors and joined in a misguided chorus of fools: "like short people watching a play performed on a high stage; they couldn't understand why people were crying or laughing," but were merely following along with whatever they observed as the responses of the audience in the front rows. 유기체적 세계관을 지닌 『회남자』에서 음악은 주로 감정 교류의 매체로서 다루어진다. 비록 『회남자』가 노자의 시각을 이어서 고요함을 중시하지만 고요함 자체보다는 이 고요함으로부터 가능한 이상적 상태, 즉 만물이 전체 체계에 가장 적합한 방식으로 감응하며 상호 영향력을 발휘하는 상태를 지향한다. 감정 교류 매체로서 기능하는 음악은 이러한 상호 영향력을 돕기 때문에 긍정적으로 묘사된다. 이와 달리 감각 자극으로 기능하는 음악은 본성의 고요한 상태를 깨뜨려 외부 세계와 감응하는 것을 방해하기 때문에 부정적으로 평가된다. 『회남자』에 서술된 즐거움 유발과 교화 작용 같은 음악의 순기능은 노자 사상에 유기체적 세계관을 더해 (...) 새로운 음악관을 전개한 것으로 평가할 수 있다. 음악을 듣고 즐거움 같은 타인의 감정을 느끼게 되고, 성왕의 뜻에 감화되는 것은 다양한 개체들이 유기적으로 연결된 세계에서 감응을 통해 상호 영향력을 발휘하는 예로 이해할 수 있다. 음악은 유기체적 세계에서 감응을 돕는 매체이고, 이러한 감응은 노자가 중시한 본성의 고요함이 전제될 때 제대로 이뤄진다. 이전 시기 논의된 음악과 기의 유사성, 감정을 기와 관련시키는 사유에 더하여, 만물이 유기적으로 연결된 세계에서 기를 통해 같은 부류끼리 응한다는 동류상응의 관점을 지닌 한 대 학자들은 음악을 무엇보다 감정 전이의 매체로 여기기 쉬웠을 것이다. 그 결과 『회남자』의 음악론은 음악에 관한 외부 기준과 음악의 효용이 중심을 차지한 이전 시대 음악론과 달리 그 초점을 음악을 생산하고 수용하는 사람의 감정에 놓게 된다. 이 연구는 서경덕 학파인 박순의 철학을 고찰하는데 목적을 둔다. 박순의 철학은 존재하는 사료가 부족하기 때문에 그 전체를 파악하기가 어렵다. 다만 『思菴集』과 『栗谷全書』에서 보이는 3번의 왕복서를 통해 그 윤곽을 파악할 수 있을 뿐이다. 그러나 이 왕복서 속에서 보이는 철학적 담론은 그의 학문적 세계가 독창적임을 짐작케 한다. 아쉽게도 독창적인 주장에 비해 왕복서에 보이는 전거들을 그 핵심만을 이야기하기 때문에 불친절 하다. 이 때문에 그의 스승인 서경덕의 철학적 세계를 요청한 후 그것에 미루어 박순의 주장을 살펴 볼 수밖에 없다. 이 과정에서 곡해나 견강부회 될 수 (...) 있는 여지 또한 존재한다. 하지만 박순의 철학을 일괄 한다는 것에도 이 연구는 충분한 가치를 지닌다고 할 수 있다. 이 연구는 서경덕의 철학을 전개한 후 3번의 왕복서에 나타난 박순과 이이의 주장에 분석 그 내용을 가진다. 특히 太極生兩儀의 개념에 기초하여 이들 사이에 나타난 첨예한 갈등과 논리 구조를 분석하고 있다. 이 과정에서 자연스럽게 박순의 철학적 세계관을 엿 볼 수 있게 된다. 본고에서는 漢代의 세계관에서 經學과 讖緯의 관계를 어떻게 접근할 것인가 하는 문제의식에서 출발한다. 참위의 사상은 黃老學과 天人感應說의 기조 속에서 음양오행의 원리를 활용하여 儒家의 경전을 해석한 특수한 형태의 經學에 속한다. 그 대표적인 책이 『역위』이다. 『역위』에서는 『주역』의 象數易學的 특징인 取象運數의 방식을 활용하여 宇宙의 도식을 그려내었다. 우주는 元氣의 원천으로부터 氣化의 작용으로 흘러가는 세계의 실재를 시공간성으로 표현한 것이다. 우주의 도식은 元氣의 본원과 太易의 범주에 입각하여 세계의 태동과 삼라만상이 생성하는 일련의 과정을 표상한 것이다. 이러한 과정은 太易, 太初, 太始, 太素의 四太說로 설명된다. 이 일련의 과정은 取象의 방식에 (...) 따라 運數의 원리를 활용하여 천지의 개벽과 그 현상을 상징한다. 천지의 틀은 우주의 일부분으로서 시간의 제한성과 공간의 한계성을 지닌 세상의 경계이다. 천지의 개벽은 시간의 연속성에 따라 공간의 통일성을 이루고 공간의 통일성 속에서 시간의 연속성이 진행되는 과정이다. 우주의 본원으로부터 만물이 생성되는 일련의 과정에서 수1의 형식은 분화의 방식으로 작동한다. 이 과정은 1의 數가 발용의 기점이 된다. 1의 수는 실체가 존재하는 상태나 형식을 가리킨다. 1과 2는 서로 대립하는 과정에서 3의 조화로 통일된다. 3의 조화란 3 전체에서 1이 본체가 되고 1의 본체에 2의 기능이 포함되어있다. 그러므로 천지의 시공간적 개벽에는 삶의 旅程에서 앞서 존재하는 경험적 축적을 통해 형성된 인간의식이 담겨있다. 이는 象과 數의 매체를 통해 세계에 대한 앞선 공통적 경험을 나타내는 先驗主義的 성격을 지닌다. 따라서 『역위』의 太易元氣觀에는 유한의 세계에서 무한의 우주를 직관적으로 체험하는 삶의 命運이 투영되어 있다. 여기에는 생명력이 작동하는 방식에 따라 우주 전체의 시공간적 과정 속에서 공동체의 가치화와 가치의 공동체화가 통합되는 인간의식의 차원이 자리잡고 있다. 신비가란 일종의 종교적인 삶을 통해서 신의 현존을 추구하였고, 이를 자신들의 전 삶의 의미로 살았던 사람들이다. 중세의 신비가들은 신비가의 선구자에 해당하는 이들로서 크게 3가지 특징을 지니고 있다. 첫째 이들의 삶은 고통과 고뇌가 가득한 현세의 삶 안에서, 이를 오히려 도약의 발판으로 삼아 영적인 삶을 산출하였고, 보다 큰 완성을 지향하였으며, 신의 모성에 대한 사유를 통해 세계역사에 대한 흔들리지 않는 낙관론을 지니고 있었다. 둘째, 중세의 신비가들은 놀라운 ‘자아의식’을 가지고 있었는데, 이는 신의 모습을 닮은 ‘진정한 자아’ 혹은 ‘근원적인 자아(le moi original)’에 대한 이해이다. ‘근원적인 자아’에 (...) 대한 이해는 이들의 삶이 본질적으로 ‘내면적인 삶’을 형성하게 하는 동기이며, 또한 인간의 절대적인 존엄성에 대한 사상적인 기초를 제공하고 있다. 셋째 신비가들은 신적 현존을 왜곡 없이 수용하기 위하여 자신의 모든 것을 비우면서 ‘무(無)’를 추구하였고, ‘무소유’와 ‘존재양식의 삶’을 형성하였다. 이렇게 이들의 실존은 무가 되기 위해 자신을 비우고, 신의 현존을 충만하게 소유하기 위해 도약하는 역동적이고 변증법적인 삶을 이루었다. 이들의 신비적인 삶은 우리들의 내면에 잠들어 있는 그 무엇을 일깨우면서, 항상 새로운 세계관의 지평을 제시하고, 인간으로 존재한다는 것의 의미를 한층 높이 끌어올려주고 있다. We investigated the influence of personality and culture on effects of mortality salience (MS) over cultural worldview defense (CWVD). We hypothesized that CWVD reactions to MS differ between Germany and Poland because of the higher conservatism of the latter country, and that they are moderated by action vs. state orientation. In this study German (N=112) and Polish (N=72), participants were exposed either to MS or to a control condition (dental pain). Punishment ratings to trivial offences and serious social transgressions were (...) measures of CWVD. Results showed that social transgressions in both conditions were more strongly punished in Poland than in Germany. Additionally, compared to the control condition, under MS action oriented punished serious transgressions more strongly in Germany whereas state oriented punished serious transgressions more strongly in Poland. That is, the effects of MS on CWVD are moderated by personality and culture. We interpret the opposite pattern of punishment to serious social transgressions given by action and state orientedin in Germany and Poland, respectively, according to the higher emotional autonomy of action-oriented persons in either culture. The World In Your Head: A Gestalt View of the Mechanism of Conscious Experience represents a bold assault on one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in science: the nature of consciousness and the human mind. Rather than examining the brain and nervous system to see what they tell us about the mind, this book begins with an examination of conscious experience to see what it can tell us about the brain. Through this analysis, the first and most obvious (...) observation is that consciousness appears as a volumetric spatial void, containing colored objects and surfaces. This reveals that the representation in the brain takes the form of an explicit volumetric spatial model of external reality. Therefore, the world we see around us is not the real world itself, but merely a miniature virtual-reality replica of that world in an internal representation. In fact, the phenomena of dreams and hallucinations clearly demonstrate the capacity of the brain to construct complete virtual worlds even in the absence of sensory input. Perception is somewhat like a guided hallucination, based on sensory stimulation. This insight allows us to examine the world of visual experience not as scientists exploring the external world, but as perceptual scientists examining a rich and complex internal representation. This unique approach to investigating mental function has implications in a wide variety of related fields, including the nature of language and abstract thought, and motor control and behavior. It also has implications to the world of music, art, and dance, showing how the patterns of regularity and periodicity in space and time--apparent in those aesthetic domains--reflect the periodic basis set of the underlying harmonic resonance representation in the brain. In the work of the late Belgian philosopher, logician and freethinker Leo Apostel (1924–1995) the concept of ‘world view’ is extensively developed. From the diverse research of Apostel, I gather and examine the constituents of a world view and their relationships. I propose to understand it as a pluralist and open, rationalised ontology of the ‘world whole’, comprising knowledge systems, valuative ethical systems and concomitant action guiding systems, to a large extent reflecting insight in the (...) exact sciences. The prolific and scattered opus of Apostel renders my account of encompassing world views approximate and incomplete. It merely outlines the intrinsically unfinished project and presents a recent development. This development mainly involves our approach to the phenomenon of emergence from a quantum theoretical perspective. (shrink)

In the last sixty years the West-European religious landscape has changed radically. People, and also religious and humanist communities, in a post-sec¬ular world are challenged to develop a new existential, ethical and spiritual language that fits to their global and pluralistic surroundings. This new world-viewing language could rise out of the reflection on contrast experiences, positive and negative disruptive experiences that question the everyday inter pretations of life. The connection of these articulated reflections on contrast experiences with former (...) world-viewing sources and practices with regard to precarious life could provide new meaning and orientation for individuals and communities. Four different sorts of dialogues can be distinguished, which together I call world-viewing dialogues: contrast experiences and the dialogue with oneself, contrast experiences discussed in small groups, contrast experiences and values in our nowadays society and contrast experiences in dialogue with philosophical and religious traditions from different cultures and ages.
