In company with its sister volume, Arts-Based Research Across Textual Media in Education explores arts-based approaches to research across media, including film and comics-related material, from a variety of geographic locations and across a range of sub-disciplines within the field of education. The authors aim to highlight some of the approaches that are not always centered in arts-based research. How might a design approach be applied to Research? Following Glanville’sGlanville, Ranulph observation that design and researchResearch are fundamentally related and that design methodsDesignmethods may be applied across domains, we framed a case study of the perceptual effects of alternate contemporary lighting technologies at an architectural scale to show how a designer/researcher could approach this kind of investigation. Design proceeds in complex domains with incomplete data and open questions. It is often concerned with the singular or unique solution rather (...) than with generalizability. Its products are applied under hybrid and dynamic, rather than controlled, conditions. Rather than work with subjects approximating a general population, informants were recruited with more extensive or diverse experiences than our own. Color perception was investigated in large-scaled installations allowing for locomotion and full visual immersion in a color-field. The effort was not to frame hypotheses for confirmation or refutation but probe the phenomena for insights. Combining images with music is a music visualization to deepen the knowledge and understanding of music information. This study briefly introduced the concept of music visualization and used a convolutional neural network and long short-term memory to pair music and images for music visualization. Then, an emotion classification loss function was added to the loss function to make full use of the emotional information in music and images. Finally, simulation experiments were performed. The results showed that the improved deep learning- (...) class='Hi'>based music visualization algorithm had the highest matching accuracy when the weight of the emotion classification loss function was 0.2; compared with the traditional keyword matching method and the nonimproved deep learning music visualization algorithm, the improved algorithm matched more suitable images. The multi-modal tasks have started to play a significant role in the research on artificial intelligence. A particular example of that domain is visual–linguistic tasks, such as visual question answering. The progress of modern machine learning systems is determined, among other things, by the data on which these systems are trained. Most modern visual question answering data sets contain limited type questions that can be answered either by directly accessing the image itself or by using external (...) data. At the same time, insufficient attention is paid to the issues of social interactions between people, which limits the scope of visual question answering systems. In this paper, we propose criteria by which images suitable for social interaction visual question answering can be selected for composing such questions, based on psychological research. Humans have been exploring colors since ancient times, but relatively complete color systems appeared one after another in the twentieth century. Even without language and other information exchanges, colors can still convey information and stimulate emotions. Therefore, color can have both physical and psychological effects on people. In this context, this paper studies the visual representation of painting colors based on psychological factors. The article studies the theory of personality traits and introduces the related content of visual (...) psychology. To explore the relationship between each variable and color psychology and the visual representation of painting colors, a binary logistic regression analysis is performed. The colors in the post-impressionist paintings of Van Gogh and Gauguin is contrasted, and experiments on psychological factors and color research is conducted. The factors that affect the color tone of the picture and the influence of psychological factors on the judgment of color brightness are investigated. Finally, the correlation analysis of personality trait dimension and irrational behavior is carried out. The experimental results of the article show that after the analysis of variance, the significance levels of regression model 1 and model 2 both reach 0.000, and the adjusted R squares are 0.319 and 0.356, respectively. In this study, regression model 2 was selected as the final model. According to Model 2, the standardized regression coefficients of agreeableness and neuroticism are 0.438 and -0.251, respectively, and the significance of the regression coefficients are 0.000 and 0.021, respectively. Visual research methods like photography and digital storytelling are increasingly used in health and social sciences research as participatory approaches that benefit participants, researchers, and audiences. Visual methods involve a number of additional ethical considerations such as using identifiable content and ownership of creative outputs. As such, ethics committees should use different assessment frameworks to consider research protocols with visual methods. Here, we outline the limitations of ethics committees in assessing projects with a (...) class='Hi'>visual focus and highlight the sparse knowledge on how researchers respond when they encounter ethical challenges in the practice of visual research. We propose a situated approach in relation to visual methodologies that encompasses a negotiated, flexible approach, given that ethical issues usually emerge in relation to the specific contexts of individual research projects. Drawing on available literature and two case studies, we identify and reflect on nuanced ethical implications in visual research, like tensions between aesthetics and research validity. The case studies highlight strategies developed in-situ to address the challenges two researchers encountered when using visual research methods, illustrating that some practice implications are not necessarily addressed using established ethical clearance procedures. A situated approach can ensure that visual research remains ethical, engaging, and rigorous. (shrink)

The COVID-19 pandemic posed a logistical problem to our normal ways of engaging in participatory visual research. Our in-person art, activism and archiving with 2SLGBTQ+ Atlantic Canadian youth pivoted to use distanced engagement strategies that met the demands of the pandemic. We sought to create networks of solidarity while we were apart. Monthly, over the course of a year, we mailed out themed packages of art supplies and directions to fifty-five 2SLGBTQ+ youth situated in the Canadian provinces of (...) New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. Participants then created the artworks, photographed them and contextualised them through text. While the resulting co-curated digital archive includes multiple mediums, here we focus on the participants’ zines and dioramas for what they taught us about 2SLGBTQ+ youth’s identities, activism, beliefs, friends, home, family, fears, strengths and futures. The digital archive of our artwork deconstructs, explores and affirms identities and functions to build solidarity during a time of increased isolation. We argue that collaboratively building the digital archive was a feminist act of reclamation and a declaration of youth queer activism. (shrink)

One of the crucial fields of study that is getting more attention is association rule mining. It is crucial to databases' knowledge discovery (KDD). KDD and association rule mining have a very broad use. It has evolved at a rapid rate over the past fifteen years. Association Rule Mining is a novel technology, although it is still in the discovery and development stages. Differentiating association rules between components in a significant video library is critical in the field of video data mining. Although benefits of design perception have been documented from the perspective of consumers on a large scale, but the perspective of employees has been ignored. This study aims to investigate the impact of design elements on employee-brand-based equity under the mediating role of the green concept. For this purpose, data are collected from the employees of the manufacturing sector and 346 responses are used for an inferential purpose. These data were collected using the survey research method through the (...) convenience sampling technique. Data has been analyzed through Smart PLS by applying the structural equation modeling technique. After assessing the measurement and structural model, the results obtained indicate that design elements of products in the manufacturing industry can influence the perception of employees and it can foster positive behavior among employees in the shape of employee-brand-based equity. Visual consent forms have been identified as a comprehensive and engaging method to obtain informed consent. These forms include imagery to explain concepts and enhance user understanding, meeting the growing need for inclusive consent methods that are lacking in traditional text-based consent forms. This visual consent study investigates the use of a visual consent approach among participants of the Raine Study, exploring their evaluation of both visual and traditional consent methods across conceptual categories of engagement, (...) comprehension, and perception. Findings suggest that both consent methods were similarly effective in supporting participants’ comprehension, engagement, and perceptions of the research process and assessments, diverging from outcomes of existing literature. Future comparative research within other longitudinal cohorts is warranted to determine if the results of this study are unique to the Raine Study or are generalizable across similar long-term studies. Recent decades have witnessed the rapid evolution of robotic applications and their expansion into a variety of spheres with remarkable achievements. This article researches a crucial technique of robot manipulators referred to as visual servoing, which relies on the visual feedback to respond to the external information. In this regard, the visual servoing issue is tactfully transformed into a quadratic programming problem with equality and inequality constraints. Differing from the traditional methods, a gradient-based recurrent neural network (...) for solving the visual servoing issue is newly proposed in this article in the light of the gradient descent method. Then, the stability proof is presented in theory with the pixel error convergent exponentially to zero. Specifically speaking, the proposed method is able to impel the manipulator to approach the desired static point while maintaining physical constraints considered. After that, the feasibility and superiority of the proposed GRNN are verified by simulative experiments. Significantly, the proposed visual servo method can be leveraged to medical robots and rehabilitation robots to further assist doctors in treating patients remotely. (shrink)

The 2018 Common Rule aimed to address this challenge by requiring a key information section, a “concise and focused” presentation of important and relevant study information. In our ongoing work, we developed a template and toolkit to improve the presentation of key information by incorporating health literacy best practices, including color and visual icons. (...) The goal of this study is to assess the impact of the visual key information (KI) pages at both the research coordinator and participant level.MethodsWe will conduct a stepped-wedge cluster randomized trial across three academic centers in the USA. We will randomize twelve research coordinators to six intervention sequences to use either usual care materials or the visual KI page when enrolling participants eligible for their independent research trials. Primary outcomes will be assessed at the research coordinator level and include organizational willingness and readiness to adopt the visual KI intervention and the feasibility, acceptability, and appropriateness of the intervention. Changes in these outcomes will be compared before implementation (baseline) and after implementation (post-recruitment). Secondary outcomes will be assessed at the participant level and include knowledge of study information, satisfaction with consent information, decisional conflict about joining the trial, and trial enrollment. We will use a two-sided Wilcoxon signed-rank test to compare the difference in primary outcomes. We will use multivariable linear regression models to investigate the effect of the consent intervention on the secondary outcomes.DiscussionThis study will evaluate the implementation of an intervention designed to improve informed consent processes using a visual KI page. ObjectiveBy establishing an ethical assessment framework to evaluate the medical ethical reasoning ability of medical students, systematically reveal the current actual situation and problems of medical ethics education in medical schools, and provide empirical evidence and improvement directions for optimizing the medical ethics education system and enhancing educational effectiveness.MethodThis study was based on the Medical Ethics Intermediate Concept Measurement (MD-ICM) questionnaire developed by Ponsopa Pinijphon from the University of Alabama in the United States. For the first time in China, (...) it conducted a localization and cultural adaptation of the questionnaire. The questionnaire covers principles such as patient autonomy, confidentiality, beneficence, and fair distribution. The survey subjects were selected through a multi-stage random sampling method. A database was established using EpiData 3.1 software, and the data were statistically analyzed using SPSS 21.0 software.ResultStudents who have studied medical ethics performed significantly better in making correct reasoning decisions compared to those who haven’t; in terms of “the teaching methods of the Medical Ethics Course”, students who chose scenario simulation and audio-visual learning methods scored significantly higher in ethical reasoning ability than those who chose theoretical lectures and case analysis; in terms of “the assessment methods of the Medical Ethics Course”, students who chose ethical reasoning tests and did not undergo test assessment scored significantly higher in ethical reasoning ability than those who chose theoretical concept tests and case reflection essays; in terms of “the learning needs of the Medical Ethics Course”, students with learning needs usually have stronger ethical emotions and ethical awareness.ConclusionThe medical ethics reasoning ability of medical students is significantly influenced by their medical ethics learning experiences, teaching methods of courses, assessment methods, and learning needs. Currently, there are shortcomings in medical ethics education in medical colleges. To enhance the ethical reasoning ability of medical students, it is necessary to strengthen the foundational position of medical ethics education, optimize the practice-oriented teaching mode, improve the diversified formative evaluation, and create a supportive educational atmosphere. With the development and application of information technology, the digitization of information management and the virtualization of physical models have become very important technical application fields in the world. The establishment of the 3D landscape model and the realization of the 3D geographic information system are based on this, and there is not only a wide range of development prospects in many aspects such as urban planning and management, planning and design, local government construction, housing industry development, land monitoring (...) and management, and environmental monitoring and evaluation. There are not only research studies and formulations but also a practical significance in other analysis, evaluation, decision making, and other departments. In recent years, the research of 3D city modeling has been developed rapidly, and most of the existing 2D-GIS can be transformed into 3D visual landscape. Based on the three-dimensional geographic information system and desktop drawing software AutoCAD, this paper takes the two-dimensional line drawing of a residential district as the base map, expounds the design process of the three-dimensional simulation model of the urban community from the aspects of map preprocessing, building simulation model construction, texture mapping, and virtual visualization, and discusses the problems encountered in it. The main contributions of this paper are that this technology puts forward a new solution for the integrated corridor operation and maintenance management, greatly improves the intelligent management level of the integrated corridor operation and maintenance work, and simplifies the complex integrated corridor operation and maintenance management. Road accidents have increased rapidly in recent years for a variety of reasons. Analyzing and visualizing road accidents through heatmaps can help improve policies for their prevention by informing about areas with a high-risk of road accidents. The purpose of this research is to build a model for the analysis and visualization of road accidents through heatmaps. Information about road accidents is extracted from the news of the main online media portals through scripts in the Python language and Web (...) Scraping techniques. From the extraction of about 30,000 articles from news portals for one year, only 829 were selected in the end that provided information about road accidents. As a result, and contribution of this research, a corpus was built with the geographic coordinates of road accidents and on this data our model was applied for the analysis and visualization of high-risk areas of road accidents using heatmaps. The visualization of heatmaps was done through a Python script, where it was applied to the geographic coordinates of road accidents. (shrink)

In recent years, research applying a gender perspective has proliferated and has contributed to reversing the androcentric view that has traditionally prevailed in the study of ancient societies. However, these important advances remain insufficient, especially with regard to the representation of diversity or of the participation of women in tasks outside the household context. In addition, these initiatives have rarely crossed the borders between specialized academic fields. In this situation, the Arsmaya Research Group believes that an effective way (...) to spread this new knowledge in society is through the creation of images that depict the role of women in ancient societies.As a result of our expertise in the fields of archaeology, architecture, ethnography, and the study of images, here we present two visual reconstructions of the past made by our group and the collaboration of artist Érika Meijide Jansen: one from the Maya Culture, depicting a room in the Royal Palace of K’anpat (Chilonché, Guatemala), and the other from the Iberian Culture, a recreation of an imaginary pottery workshop of the city of Edeta (modern-day Llíria, Valencia, Spain) in which women appear engaged in artistic activities. Both representations are based on verifiable and fairly accurate historical data. The repertoire of objects, materials and techniques reproduced in both pictures is supported by the archaeological evidence, architectural studies, critical reviews of the discourses, and ethnographic studies carried out by the authors. This exploration aims to study the emotion recognition of speech and graphic visualization of expressions of learners under the intelligent learning environment of the Internet. After comparing the performance of several neural network algorithms related to deep learning, an improved convolution neural network-Bi-directional Long Short-Term Memory algorithm is proposed, and a simulation experiment is conducted to verify the performance of this algorithm. The experimental results indicate that the Accuracy of CNN-BiLSTM algorithm reported here reaches 98.75%, which is at least 3.15% (...) higher than that of other algorithms. Besides, the Recall is at least 7.13% higher than that of other algorithms, and the recognition rate is not less than 90%. Evidently, the improved CNN-BiLSTM algorithm can achieve good recognition results, and provide significant experimental reference for research on learners’ emotion recognition and graphic visualization of expressions in an intelligent learning environment. This paper firstly extracts the humanised design elements of urban small and micro public space from the connotation of urban small and micro public space and humanised design, and applies its design elements to actual projects. The questionnaire is taken as the main source of research data in this paper, and the independent variables, dependent variables and control variables are additionally set. Combining the research data with mathematical and statistical methods, we explore the interaction relationship between the humanised (...) design of urban micro and small public spaces and the subjective well-being of residents. It is found that the regional characteristics of the humanised design elements of urban small and micro public spaces have the greatest influence on subjective well-being, with a regression coefficient of 0.418. In addition, it can be concluded that site selection, regional characteristics, scale, and visual mentality have significant correlation on life happiness, life satisfaction, and economic satisfaction, satisfying P. ABSTRACT Although considerable efforts have been made to summarize the behavioral ethics literature, a quantitative visualization is necessary to generate an overall understanding of research on unethical behavior in organizations. Using CiteSpace, this study conducts a bibliometric review and visualizes the intellectual base of the unethical workplace behavior field. Based on a dataset of 8765 unethical‐behavior‐related publications collected from the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) database from 1993 to 2023, we identify landmark studies, analyze key research themes, (...) visualize the network of major theories, and track the evolution of research on unethical behavior in organizations via co‐citation and co‐occurrence analysis. After tracking the developmental trajectory and outlining the current state of the art, we identify potential trends in research on unethical workplace behavior and suggest some important research directions. Our bibliometric review generates a clear visualization of unethical behavior in organizations, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of this body of literature. These findings also offer valuable insights for managers seeking to address unethical behavior in their organizations and highlight implications for policymakers aiming to promote ethical workplace environments. This study delves into the aesthetic characteristics of neo-deconstructionist fashion design. Three deconstructionist denim brands are selected for analysis to explore the expressive methods and techniques within their designs. Through an examination of previous studies, it is concluded that the aesthetic characteristics of neo-deconstructionism encompass diversity, fun, pursuit of new experiences and communication. The playfulness of this movement manifests in the ironic metaphors of irregular designs and experimental patterns. It utilizes fashion as a medium to convey positive messages and establishes (...) both spiritual and visual communication with people, thus inspiring them to reevaluate themselves and the society and to pursue new experiences from the diversity of Neo-Deconstructivist fashion aesthetics. As a result of this study, four fashion designs were created, with two of them being produced. The findings of this study can serve as fundamental data for the development of neo-deconstructivist denim fashion design and offer extensive inspiration for the creativity in denim design. (shrink)

This study aims to reveal the pedagogical thinking patterns, intuitive orientations toward learning theories, and professional identity formation of prospective Religious Culture and Moral Knowledge (RCMK) teachers by analyzing their cognitive representations of the concept of “learning” through drawing-based visual data. The research is grounded in the assumption that learning is a multilayered experience intertwined with meaning-making, value construction, and identity formation, extending beyond the acquisition of knowledge. In this respect, it is assumed that visual representations, (...) similar to verbal narratives, offer rich and often implicit indicators of how individuals conceptualize learning; therefore, the drawings produced by the participants in response to the prompt “Can you draw learning?” were treated as a qualitative data source for uncovering their mental models. The research was designed qualitatively, employing participant drawings as the data collection tool and applying thematic analysis based on document analysis. The study group consists of first-year prospective RCMK teachers enrolled at the Faculty of Theology, Kırşehir Ahi Evran University. At the beginning of the 2024–2025 academic year, each participant was asked to produce a single drawing representing “learning,” resulting in 70 visual artifacts. Sixteen drawings that did not meet eligibility and interpretability criteria were excluded, and the final analysis was conducted on 54 drawings (analytical dataset, n=54). Following preliminary coding, the coding framework was refined, and thematic classifications were structured under three overarching categories: “Traditional,” “Modern,” and “Hybrid,” with all percentages reported based on the analytical dataset. Bruner’s cognitive representation theory and Kolb’s experiential learning cycle jointly informed the interpretive framework. The findings show that 59.3% of the participants conceptualize learning within a traditional teacher-centered and knowledge-transmission-oriented paradigm; 31.5% adopt hybrid patterns that combine traditional and contemporary indicators; and 9.3% demonstrate a modern approach emphasizing experience, interaction, and contextual sensitivity. Traditional representations predominantly included books, libraries, classroom-board arrangements, and teacher figures, visualizing learning as an accumulative and transmissive process. Modern representations highlighted nature/environment, social interaction, play/collaboration, and everyday life contexts, positioning learning as a multi-actor, affective process that transcends classroom boundaries. Hybrid representations reflected a transitional mindset wherein classical elements such as classrooms and books coexist with technology, collaboration, and experiential motifs, indicating the gradual evolution of pedagogical cognition. The study integrates visual data with descriptive quantitative indicators (frequency–percentage) and in-depth content-symbol analyses, thereby presenting an intensive mixed-qualitative thematic approach. Codes, themes, and decision rules were connected to an audit trail; boundary cases and operational definitions were refined through peer debriefing, thus enhancing credibility, dependability, and confirmability. Ethical approvals were secured, informed consent was obtained, and all visual materials were anonymized and used solely for scientific purposes. Overall, the results demonstrate that while text- and teacher-centered assumptions remain dominant in the mental learning maps of prospective teachers, hybrid representations indicate a meaningful potential for renewal through the incorporation of interaction, nature/context, collaboration, and technology. The findings emphasize the need to systematically structure experiential, visual, and creative activities (e.g., metaphor/drawing workshops, rubric-based drawing analysis, micro-teaching modules aligned with Kolb’s cycle) within teacher education. The study acknowledges its limitations, including a homogeneous sample from a single institution and context-dependent interpretations of visual data; transferability rather than generalizability is emphasized. The research ultimately contributes to strengthening the use of visual data in religious education studies, offering both theoretical implications and practical insights for future teacher education design. Driven by the rural revitalisation strategy, the construction of ‘beautiful countryside’ has been actively pursued across various regions. However, rural brands still face challenges such as single development models, serious homogenisation,and insufficient market competitiveness. In response to these challenges, this study examines the fruit industry in Fengxian District, Shanghai, exploring how visual identity design can enhance brand uniqueness and market competitiveness, thereby promoting regional economic development.The study begins with an in-depth analysis of the current state of the fruit industry (...) in Fengxian District. Despite having rich agricultural resources and a superior ecological environment, Fengxian's fruit brands struggle to stand out in the highly competitive market, particularly against the brands from Chongming County and neighboring regions like Zhejiang and Jiangsu. Through literature review, field research, interviews, and questionnaires, this study comprehensively assesses the status and challenges of Fengxian's fruit brands, delving into their brand resources, environment, and cultural advantages to provide a scientific foundation for visual identity design.Based on these insights, the study proposes a visual identity design strategy for Fengxian fruit brands, aiming to create a unique and recognisable brand image by clarifying brand positioning and integrating regional culture and ecological strengths. The strategy seeks to visually convey the high quality and uniqueness of Fengxian fruits, enhancing consumer identification and loyalty to the brand. The results indicate that a well-planned visual identity design significantly enhances the market competitiveness of Fengxian fruit brands and provides a scientific basis for policy formulation, thereby promoting the sustainable development of the fruit industry in Fengxian District. This study not only offers practical strategies for enhancing Fengxian fruit brands but also serves as a reference model for rural Fruit branding nationwide, contributing to the broader goal of rural revitalisation. As AI systems increasingly shape urban mobility futures, the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion have become central to responsible design. While race, gender, and age have been extensively studied, people with reduced mobility (PRM) remain underrepresented in empirical research on AI and autonomous vehicles (AVs). This article addresses this critical gap by investigating how disability and intersecting social categories are perceived and attended to in the visual framing of AV from an ethical standpoint. Our aim is to (...) understand how people cognitively perceive PRM in automated decision-making contexts, and what this reveals about inclusive AI-based mobility design. We conducted a large-scale online eye-tracking experiment (N = 1272) combined with a survey to assess visual attention toward PRM in AV. Results reveal that PRM are consistently overlooked in visual attention compared to other demographic categories. Cluster analysis identified three distinct profiles of perception: High Disability Awareness, Adaptive Disability Evaluators, and Low Disability and Diversity Awareness, the latter encompassing most respondents. These insights were validated in an in-lab experiment with data science experts. Despite broad endorsement of fairness, justice, and diversity as guiding values in AV development, actual gaze behavior suggests a disconnect between normative commitments and perceptual engagement. We argue that this “blind spot” in AI-based mobility reflects deeper ableist assumptions embedded in algorithmic perceptions and raises ethical concerns. To counter this, we call for inclusive, cross-sectoral advisory boards that include PRM communities, ensuring that algorithmic designs not only reflect diversity but ethically see it. (shrink)

This study focuses on user experience from the perspective of big data to complete the aggregation, clustering, and visual presentation of knowledge. Using a combination of sample literature review, visualization technologies, knowledge map analysis, Carrot2 clustering, and other methodologies, this study intends to examine user experience from three perspectives: research state, hotspots, and trends. First, based on the double-map overlay, core institutions, core countries, core authors, core journals, and core references distribution research, the knowledge flow, (...) class='Hi'>research power, and research subjects of user experience are analyzed. Secondly, through keyword clustering analysis, this research intuitively presents the research topics of user experience and reveals the research hotspots and the evolution path of research methods. Finally, with the help of the subject clustering algorithm, the emerging trends of user experience research are predicted: the immersive experience upgrade of multi-scenario integration, the innovative design of multi-role collaboration, and the cross-disciplinary interactive exploration of multi-discipline. The paper describes an innovative structured workshop methodology in garden-based-learning called “Nature in Your Face” aimed at provoking a change in citizens behavior and engagement as a consequence of the emotional activation in response to disruptive artistic messages. The methodology challenges the assumption that the change needed to meet the carbon targets can be reached with incremental, non-invasive behavior engineering techniques such as nudging or gamification. Instead, it explores the potential of disruptive communication to push citizens out of their (...) comfort zones and into creative modes of re-creating futures. This is done by confronting us with consequences of consumption by means of art and eco-visualizations. The aim being to achieve awareness, mental flexibility, and spurring debate. Thus, we invite them to react – and act upon these reactions by communicating their feelings or thoughts. This is used as an entrance point for broader and/or deeper engagement in a structured three-step methodology; Framing: A disruptive element is introduced into the local environment. This triggers an emotional reaction, which then is taken up in a process of framing the problem and working with solutions. Twisting: in a guided process, the initial energy from the emotional confrontation is twisted into a creative exploration of innovative solutions, from the perspective of the children. Using: The last stage is using the developed solutions in the local social system. The methodology is being applied in cooperation with a primary school, and is iteratively adjusted and evaluated in a formative, action-research based approach scenario. NiYF is to stimulate societal engagement through deliberately confronting stakeholders with unexpected and potentially upsetting appearances of nature, climate effects, or carbon-neutral lifestyle scenarios. We have verified the practical usefulness and potential of the methodology and found that NiYF triggers societal engagement and transition, negotiating responsibilities and unlocking action potentials. We also found that eco-anxiety, denial, self-efficacy and cognitive dissonance form children’s understanding of plastic. The project marks a paradigm shift from creating knowledge to using knowledge to create action, and a focus on learning from evaluating and adapting the approach in the field. (shrink)

Online data collection with infants raises special opportunities and challenges for developmental research. One of the most prevalent methods in infancy research is eye-tracking, which has been widely applied in laboratory settings to assess cognitive development. Technological advances now allow conducting eye-tracking online with various populations, including infants. However, the accuracy and reliability of online infant eye-tracking remain to be comprehensively evaluated. No research to date has directly compared webcam-based and in-lab eye-tracking data from infants, similarly (...) to data from adults. The present study provides a direct comparison of in-lab and webcam-based eye-tracking data from infants who completed an identical looking time paradigm in two different settings. We assessed 4-6-month-old infants in an eye-tracking task that measured the detection of audio-visual asynchrony. Webcam-based and in-lab eye-tracking data were compared on eye-tracking and video data quality, infants’ viewing behavior, and experimental effects. Results revealed no differences between the in-lab and online setting in the frequency of technical issues and participant attrition rates. Video data quality was comparable between settings in terms of completeness and brightness, despite lower frame rate and resolution online. Eye-tracking data quality was higher in the laboratory than online, except in case of relative sample loss. Gaze data quantity recorded by eye-tracking was significantly lower than by video in both settings. In valid trials, eye-tracking and video data captured infants’ viewing behavior uniformly, irrespective of setting. Despite the common challenges of infant eye-tracking across experimental settings, our results point toward the necessity to further improve the precision of online eye-tracking with infants. Taken together, online eye-tracking is a promising tool to assess infants’ gaze behavior but requires careful data quality control. The demographic composition of both samples differed from the generic population on caregiver education: our samples comprised caregivers with higher-than-average education levels, challenging the notion that online studies will per se reach more diverse populations. In combination with whole report and partial report tasks, the Theory of Visual Attention (TVA) can be used to estimate individual differences in five basic attentional parameters: The visual processing speed, the storage capacity of visual short-term memory, the perceptual threshold, the efficiency of top-down selectivity, and the spatial bias of attentional weighting. TVA-based assessment has been used in about 30 studies to investigate attentional deficits in a range of neurological and psychiatric conditions: (a) neglect and (...) simultanagnosia, (b) reading disturbances, (c) aging and neurodegenerative diseases, and most recently (d) neurodevelopmental disorders. The article introduces TVA based assessment, discusses its methodology and psychometric properties, and reviews the progress made in each of the four research fields. The empirical results demonstrate the general usefulness of TVA-based assessment for many types of clinical neuropsychological research. The method’s most important qualities are cognitive specificity and theoretical grounding, but it is also characterized by good reliability and sensitivity to minor deficits. The review concludes by pointing to promising new areas for clinical TVA-based research. (shrink)

This article presents a selective review of recent design PhDs that identify and analyse the methodological innovation that is occurring in the field, in order to inform future provision of research training. Six recently completed design PhDs are used to highlight possible philosophical and practical models that can be adopted by future PhD students in design. Four characteristics were found in design PhD methodology: innovations in the format and structure of the thesis, a pick-and-mix approach to research design, (...) situating practice in the inquiry, and the validation of visual analysis. The article concludes by offering suggestions on how research training can be improved. By being aware of recent methodological innovations in the field, design educators will be better informed when developing resources for future design doctoral candidates and assisting supervision teams in developing a more informed and flexible approach to practice-based research. Background Despite the bourgeoning of digital tools for bioethics research, education, and engagement, little research has empirically investigated the impact of interactive visualizations as a way to translate ethical frameworks and guidelines. To date, most frameworks take the format of text-only documents that outline and offer ethical guidance on specific contexts. This study’s goal was to determine whether an interactive-visual format supports frameworks in transferring ethical knowledge by improving learning, deliberation, and user experience.Methods An experimental comparative study (...) was conducted with a pre-, mid-, and post-test design using the online survey platform Qualtrics. Participants were university based early-stage health researchers who were randomly assigned to either the control condition (text-only document) or the experimental condition (interactive-visual). The primary outcome variables were learning, (measured using a questionnaire), deliberation (using cases studies) and user experience (measured using the SED/UD Scale). Analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and mixed-effects linear regression.Results Of the 80 participants, 44 (55%) used the text-only document and 36 (45%) used the interactive-visual. Results of the knowledge-test scores showed a statistically significant difference between participants’ post-test scores, indicating that the interactive-visual format better supported understanding, acquisition, and application of the framework’s knowledge. Findings from the case studies showed both formats supported ethical deliberation. Results further indicated the interactive-visual provided an overall better episodic and remembered user experience compared with the text-only document.Conclusions Our findings show that ethical frameworks formatted with interactive and visual qualities provide a more pleasing user experience and are effective formats for ethics learning and deliberation. These findings have implications for practitioners developing and deploying ethical frameworks and guidelines (e.g., in educational or employee-onboarding settings), in that the knowledge generated can lead to more effective dissemination practices of normative guidelines and health data ethics concepts. Much of the current imaging literature either denies the existence of wakeful non-mental imagers, views non-imagers motivationally as 'repressors' or 'neurotic', or acknowledges them but does not fully incorporate them into their models. Neurobiologists testing for imaging loss seem to assume that visual recognition, describing objects, and free-hand drawing require the forming of conscious images. The intuition that 'the psyche never thinks without an image.... the reasoning mind thinks its ideas in the form of images' (Aristotle) has a long (...) tradition in philosophical psychology, from Aristotle through the British empiricists to the British-empiricist-inspired introspection paradigm of Titchener. The massive shift in early experimental psychology to the introspective-antagonistic paradigm of Watson's behaviourism, may have sprung from the contrary intuition that no one thinks in mental images. In both cases, people seemed to assume that what is in one's own mind is in everybody's mind. A third, mediating, intuition - that some people do not think with conscious mental imagery -- seems to be confirmed by empirical studies on many levels. From the early imagery interviews of Francis Galton through many modern surveys, including my own, a consistent diversity of self-reports on ones own mental imagery abilities suggests that some 2-5% of people are very poor- or non-visual- imagers who, yet, maintain normal visual recognition abilities. Brownfield has become one of the critical issues in modern cities. Over the past few decades, a considerable number of papers on brownfield research have been published. This study reviewed 773 documents themed with “brownfield” in the Web of Science core database between 1980 and 2020 and used the CiteSpace software to sort out the spatial and temporal distribution, knowledge groups, subject structures and hotspot fields, and evolutionary trends of global brownfield research. The analysis focuses on distribution of (...) lead authors and their institutions, high-frequency categories and keywords, high influential journals, author contribution, and evolutionary trends based on coword analysis, coauthor analysis, cocitation analysis, and cluster analysis of documents. On the basis of the aforementioned keywords, clusters, and citation bursts analysis, this paper establishes a multidisciplinary framework for brownfield research, suggesting the main research directions for the future development, which provides theoretical support and practical guidance for the research direction of future brownfield research. BackgroundProblem-Based Learning is an instructional method of hands-on, active learning centered on investigating and resolving messy, real-world problems. This study aims to systematically analyze the current status and hotspots of PBL research and provide insights for research in the field.MethodsProblem-based learning-related publications were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection using “Problem-Based Learning”. Annual publications, countries, institutions, authors, journals, references, and keywords in the field were visually analyzed using the R, VOSviewer, and Microsoft Excel (...) 2019 software.ResultsA total of 2,790 articles and reviews were analyzed, with a steady increase in publications in the field of PBL. Overall, the United States was the major contributor to the study of PBL. Van Der Vleuten CPM was the key researcher in this field. Moreover, most of the publications were published in Medical Education. Keyword analysis showed that current research hotspots focus on the extensions of PBL teaching mode, application of PBL teaching method, and reform of PBL.ConclusionResearch on PBL is flourishing. Cooperation and exchange between countries and institutions should be strengthened in the future. These findings will provide a better understanding of the state of PBL research and inform future research ideas. (shrink)

Visual working memory is a construct hypothesized to store a small amount of accurate perceptual information that can be brought to bear on a task. Much research concerns the construct's capacity and the precision of the information stored. Two prominent theories of VWM representation have emerged: slot-based and continuous-resource mechanisms. Prior modeling work suggests that a continuous resource that varies over trials with variable capacity and a potential to make localization errors best accounts for the empirical data. (...) Questions remain regarding the variability in VWM capacity and precision. Using a novel eye-tracking paradigm, we demonstrate that VWM facilitates search and exhibits effects of fixation frequency and recency, particularly for prior targets. Whereas slot-based memory models cannot account for the human data, a novel continuous-resource model does capture the behavioral and eye tracking data, and identifies the relevant resource as item activation. The article explores the phenomenon of visual and aesthetic thinking as an emerging managerial competence and an integral component of management culture in the hospitality industry. Moving beyond traditional rational approaches, the study conceptualizes visual-aesthetic thinking as a form of managerial intelligence that integrates cognitive, sensory, and cultural dimensions of decision-making. It emphasizes that visual perception, color, composition, and spatial design function as non-verbal management tools capable of structuring team behavior, stimulating creativity, and reinforcing brand identity. (...) class='Hi'>Based on content analysis and comparative review of international and Ukrainian research, the authors identify four structural dimensions of this phenomenon: visual culture as a channel of managerial communication, the cognitive-aesthetic nature of decision-making, the aesthetic environment as a managerial instrument, and visual-aesthetic thinking as a marker of advanced leadership culture. The study demonstrates how managers in hotels and restaurants utilize visual codes, design elements, and aesthetic cues to create multisensory service environments that enhance staff motivation, improve customer experience, and promote emotional coherence within teams. The authors argue that the aestheticization of management contributes to organizational stability, cognitive economy, and the emotional sustainability of service personnel. The findings expand theoretical understanding of aesthetic intelligence in management and suggest practical implications for leadership development, staff adaptation, and the design of emotionally engaging service spaces in the hospitality sector. Global warming and other climate issues seriously threaten global sustainable development. As citizen environmental behavior can have a positive impact on the environment, it is of great theoretical significance and practical reference value to study the impact of psychological distance theory on citizen environmental behavior. This study obtained 2,633 related studies from 1980 to 2020 from the Web of Science as research objects, and used CiteSpace, VOSviewer, Netdraw, and other software programs to perform a bibliometric analysis, which can show (...) the complex relationship implied in the citation, intuitively grasp the development context and hot frontier in this field, and help scholars better study citizen environmental behavior. The results and conclusions are as follows. The related research covered three periods: infancy, growth, and outbreak. Chronologically, the relevant research evolved from building models to analyze the impact of environmental enrichment on human environmental behavior, to studying the motivation behind citizen environmental behavior, and finally to paying attention to sustainable development. A cluster analysis of high-frequency keywords identified three research hotspots: “drivers of psychological distance of environmental change perception on citizen environmental behavior,” “impact of social distance on adolescents’ behavior,” and “construal level theory and citizen green behavior.” Based on these findings, possible future research directions were identified, including changing from a single theory to a combination of multiple theories to comprehensively study citizen environmental protection behavior; analyzing the motivation of citizen environmental behavior and summarizing the general motivation of environmental behavior according to its internal relationship; and determining how to narrow the global psychological distance, strengthen the awareness of the community of human destiny, and explore the establishment of an efficient global climate cooperation mechanism. BackgroundDepression is common psychiatric morbidity in breast cancer survivors, seriously affecting patients’ quality of life and mental health. A growing body of research has investigated depression in breast cancer. However, no visual bibliometric analysis was conducted in this field. This study aimed to visualize the literature to identify hotspots and frontiers in research on breast cancer and depression.MethodsThe publications related to depression in breast cancer were retrieved in the Web of Science Core Collection between 1 January 2002 (...) and 17 March 2022. VOSviewer was used to identify co-occurrences and collaborations among countries, institutions, and keywords. CiteSpace was used to detect keyword bursts.ResultsA total of 7,350 articles and reviews related to depression in breast cancer were identified. From 2002 to 2022, the United States and the People’s Republic of China were the most productive countries in this field. The University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of Toronto were the most productive institutions in this field. The Journal of Psycho-oncology, followed by Supportive Care in Cancer and the Journal of Clinical Oncology, had the most publications on depression in breast cancer. Of the top 10 journals, seven were from the United States, two were from England, and one was from Germany. Five research hotspots of depression in breast cancer were identified by co-word analysis. Research on post-traumatic growth, spiritual interventions, cognitive-behavioral therapy, physical activity, and symptom cluster management of depression in breast cancer was relatively mature in the core hotspots. Burst detection of keywords on depression in breast cancer showed the latest hotspots, such as mental health, cancer survivor mortality, and activity.ConclusionThe research on depression in breast cancer is growing. Attention should be paid to the latest hotspots, such as mental health, cancer survivor, mortality, exercise, and physical activity. (shrink)

Enterprise Network has increasingly gained popularity in academia. Over the past few decades, a substantial amount of EN studies have been published in China. Drawing upon a sample of 603 papers retrieved from the Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index database between 1998 and 2020, this study aims to delve into the status quo, knowledge base, research focus, and evolutionary trends of EN research in China. A multifaceted bibliometric analysis was performed using CiteSpace. The findings mainly indicate that the (...) research on EN in China has a clear development context, and the research content gradually changes from macro to micro. In addition to foreign Social Network theories, the research results of domestic scholars have become the basic knowledge in this field. The research includes these topics: the conceptualization of EN, EN as indicators of enterprise development, EN’s impact on start-ups, mechanisms of EN’s effect and governance of EN. The potential direction for future research has been identified as the integration between EN and other forms of networks, and the structure of EN. (shrink)

The subject of this article is the works of the Russian artists of the late XIX – early XX centuries in the context of problematic of symbolism and Art Nouveau, as well as the scientific foundation that has developed as yet in studying this topic. Research methodology is based on the conceptual synthesis of classical art history approaches towards the analysis of artistic material with the theoretical interdisciplinary methods of humanities, such as iconology and hermeneutics, as well as (...) the contextual-associative method developed by the author. The goal of this article consists in determination of the peculiarities of symbolism in Russia due to the transformation of the attitude towards the spiritual problematic of art of the turn of the XIX – XX centuries, which is relevant for the modern art history. The author is firs in the Russian art history to conduct a comprehensive analytical overview of the development stages of symbolism in the Russian visual art based on the years-long work with the archival materials, scientific publications, and works of the Art Nouveau authors stored in the museum funds, many of which after 1917 appeared to be on the periphery of attention of art historians due to ideological reasons. The revealed individual characteristics of symbolism as a holistic artistic phenomenon, created on the level of modern humanistic knowledge, determine the novelty of this work and can valuable in further study of symbolism and Art Nouveau. Broadening of representations on the Russian art of the late XIX – early XX centuries, allow returning the heritage of the symbolist artists into the context of art, which is of undeniable importance from the perspective of restoration of natural logic of the development of the history of art in Russia, making this publication valuable in various fields of study of art and culture. Purpose This paper aims to describe the popular trends and methods and ICT tools used for mapping and visualization of scientific domains as a research methodology which is attracting more and more interest from scientific information and science studies professionals. Science mapping or bibliometric mapping is a spatial representation of how disciplines, fields, specialties and individual documents or authors. The researchers analysed Bibexel, Pajek, VOSViewer, programmes used for processing and visualization of bibliographic and bibliometric data, within the framework of (...) the implementation of IRNet research network project and activities and presented several examples of visualisation. Design/methodology/approach Among the main indicators of research effectiveness – bibliometric indicators – is a powerful information tool to support the development of science. Practical research methods were prepared using the programs: Bibexel (metadata analyses), program Pajek: graph editing and visualization of the graph structure of co-authorship – using the method of Kamada-Kawai and VOSviewer: a computer program for creating maps based on network data and for visualizing and exploring these maps. The main features of VOSviewer can be summarized for creating maps based on network data, visualizing and exploring maps. Findings The cited references and keywords are used to analyse in particular the intellectual base used by the research field or to analyse documents that cite the same references. Originality/value The authors of the paper, who are researchers of the European IRNet project and international research network, described and analysed certain bibliographic results of these activities using methods of mapping and visualization of scientific domains.
