To what extent should we focus on implicit bias in order to eradicate persistent social injustice? Structural prioritizers argue that we should focus less on individual minds than on unjust social structures, while equal prioritizers think that both are equally important. This article introduces the framework of transactive memory into the debate to defend the equal priority view. The transactive memory framework helps us see how structure can emerge from individual interactions as an irreducibly social product. If this is right, (...) then debiasing interventions are structural interventions. I argue that there is an affective injustice in gendered and racialized oppression. To account for this, we must deny the opposition of affect and intentionality often assumed in the philosophy of emotion and the affective turn: while affect and intentionality are not opposed in principle, affective intentionality may be refused uptake in oppressive practices. In section 1, I read Merleau‐Ponty’s theory of the body schema as a theory of affect that accommodates my account of affective injustice and aligns (...) with accounts of affect transmission and circulation in feminist philosophies of the affective turn. This is crucial for understanding Fanon’s contribution to the theory of the body schema, in which it is susceptible to historical‐racial “affective disorders.” In sections 2–4, I distinguish three types of affective injustice: affective marginalization, exploitation, and violence. In section 2 I develop an intersectional feminist account of this distinction drawing on Lorde and Lugones and raise questions about the limits of framing the issue of affective injustice in terms of intentionality as opposed to a more psychoanalytic conceptual vocabulary that accommodates the displacement of affective force. In sections 3 and 4, I explore these affective injustices through an analysis of Fanonian concepts, showing how the theory of the body schema can accommodate not only affective intentionality but also the oppressive disjunction of affect and intentionality, as well as forms of affective injustice that exceed the oppressive disabling of sense‐making and involve the exploitative and violent displacement of affective force. It connects both fields and offers a proper theoretical foundation for the contemporary developments of Epistemic Logic regarding the dynamics of information. It builds a bridge between the view of Awareness Justification Internalism, and a dynamic approach to Awareness Logic. The book starts with an introduction to the main topics in Epistemic Logic and Epistemology and reviews the disconnection between the two fields. It (...) analyses three core notions representing the basic structure of the conceptual schema: “Epistemic Awareness”, “Knowledge” and “Justification”. Next, it presents the Explicit Aware Knowledge Schema, using a diagram of three ellipses to illustrate the schema, and a formal model based on a neighbourhood-model structure, that shows one concrete application of the EAK-Schema into a logical structure. The book ends by presenting conclusions and final remarks about the uses and applications of the EAK-Schema. It shows that the most important feature of the schema is that it serves both as a theoretical correlate to the dynamic extensions of Awareness Logic, providing it with a philosophical background, and as an abstract conceptual structure for a re-interpretation of Epistemology. Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology of Perception (2012 [1945]) opens with a detailed critique of traditional philosophical accounts of sensation, generally understood as having Husserl's “content-apprehension schema” among its targets. The schema sees perception as resulting from the interpretation (“apprehension” or “apperception”) of “raw” sensory contents (or “hyle”). Both the schema's plausibility and the extent of Husserl's later reliance on it remain subjects of significant debate. In this paper, I reconstruct the schema's evolution across Husserl's corpus and argue—against a (...) popular interpretation by Boehm (1966) and Sokolowski (1970)—that Husserl never completely rejected its validity for an analysis of perception, but simply restricted its scope of application. I argue that this model still offers a plausible framework for understanding perception and provides fertile ground for collaboration between phenomenology and the empirical sciences. I conclude by addressing Merleau-Ponty's objection that sensations, or hyletic data, are undiscoverable through direct reflection, and thus have no place in phenomenological analysis. Rather than forcing a rejection of this notion, I argue this signals that Merleau-Ponty's conception of phenomenology is too narrow: to reconstruct the early genesis of the conscious subject, phenomenologists need to rely on methods other than direct reflection. Since the 1950s, philosophers and AI researchers have held that disambiguating natural language sentences depended on common sense. In 2012, the Winograd Schema Challenge was established to evaluate the common-sense reasoning abilities of a machine by testing its ability to disambiguate sentences. The designers argued only a system capable of “thinking in the full-bodied sense” would be able to pass the test. However, by 2023, the original authors concede the test has been soundly defeated by large language models which (...) still seem to lack common sense of full-bodied thinking. In this paper, we argue that disambiguating sentences only seemed like a good test of common-sense based on a certain picture of the relationship between linguistic comprehension and semantic knowledge—one typically associated with the early computational theory of mind and Symbolic AI. If this picture is rejected, as it is by most LLM researchers, then disambiguation ceases to look like a comprehensive test of common-sense and instead appear only to test linguistic competence. The upshot is that any linguistic test, not just disambiguation, is unlikely to tell us much about common sense or genuine intelligence. (shrink)

The concept of cuteness, which can evoke positive emotions in people, is an essential aspect to consider in artificial intelligence design. This study aimed to investigate whether the use of baby schema designed avatars in computer-mediated communication elicits higher positive attitudes than neutral avatars and whether the ethnicity of the cute avatars influences individuals' perceived level of cuteness. 485 participants from Israel and Japan viewed six avatar images, including three baby schema avatars of different visual characteristics and ethnicities (...) (Caucasian, Asian, and Black) and three neutral avatars. Participants rated their attitudes on each avatar, and the results revealed that the baby schema designed avatars were rated cuter, more likable, approachable, and pleasant than the neutral mature avatars. Cultural differences were also evident, as the Caucasian baby schema avatar was rated cuter among Japanese participants, while the Asian and Black baby schema avatars were rated cuter among Israeli respondents. The study findings suggest that cute avatar design can serve as a powerful tool for promoting positive interactions in computer-mediated communication, especially in cultures that highly value cuteness, such as Japan. However, the subjective nature of cuteness is evident as attitudes toward cuteness varied significantly across cultures and individuals. This research highlights the significance of cultural diversity and emphasizes the importance of considering cuteness as a crucial aspect of artificial intelligence design, particularly when creating avatars intended to elicit positive emotions from users. Therefore, designers should be mindful of potential cultural and individual differences in the perception of cuteness while developing avatars for various applications. (shrink)

The following leverages a queer(ed) somaesthetic lens to analyze the protagonist of "Poor Things" (2023), Bella Baxter, as a figure of deviance. Bella's body, as a queer(ed) space, serves as a vehicle for learning through the sensual erotic, a source of social discourse on personhood, morality, and autonomy, and a space where others project hegemonic norms of beauty, gender, and sexuality. The article further examines queerness through her identity, actions, gender, and sexuality and challenges conventional norms, making her body a (...) site for exploration and expression of deviation. Finally, the article examines the role of power, policing, and violence as a by-product of deviance, drawing parallels between Bella's experiences and those of queer people and other marginalized groups. By exploring Bella's character, the paper illuminates "Poor Things" (2023) as a compelling commentary on queer(ed) and embodied discussions of identity, autonomy, and personhood. (shrink)

According to Conceptual Metaphor Theory, the Source-Path-Goal schema constitutes a central concept in cognition. Apart from literally structuring “movement”, SPG also shapes our understanding of “purposive activity”, including questing and story-telling. A problem in CMT, however, is that the existence of image schemas is almost exclusively postulated on the basis of verbal expressions. To examine the claim that people recruit image schemas such as SPG to make sense of life, it is essential to examine non-verbal modalities. Animation has highly (...) medium-specific opportunities to exploit SPG by its emphasis on “manner of movement” and “balance”. Three animation films exemplifying MOVEMENT, QUEST, and STORY are analyzed in terms of SPG to chart how they exploit this schema. We end the paper by positioning our findings with respect to recent discussions about image schemas in Hampe and by suggesting avenues for further research. (shrink)

This paper concerns the study of Corporate Responsibility and its role in building positive attitudes and intentions of customers and employees towards organisations. It adopts a stakeholder perspective to the study of Corporate Responsibility (Waddock 2002; Wood and Jones 1995; Freeman 1984) and conceptualises its impact by positioning it within Fishbein and Ajzen’s (1975) generic framework of beliefs, attitudes and intentions (the theory of reasoned action).An empirical research model is developed in which Corporate Responsibility is established as a concept that (...) is expressed in the experiences, observations and beliefs of customers and employees. The concept as defined is a key driver of customer and employee positive attitudes and intentions towards a business. The research model is tested empirically using a quantitative survey design in thecontext of a financial service organisation in the UK. Data is analysed through application of the Partial Least Squares (PLS) structural equation modelling technique.The findings indicate that the Corporate Responsibility-related experiences, observations and beliefs of customers and employees significantly impact the development of positive attitudes and intentions towards the organisation. The findings also indicate that beliefs about Corporate Responsibility partially mediate the relationships between experiences, observations and positive attitudes. (shrink)

We present a logically detailed case-study of Darwinian evolutionary explanation. Special features of Darwin’s explanatory schema made it an unusual theoretical breakthrough, from the point of view of the philosophy of science. The schema employs no theoretical terms, and puts forward no theoretical hypotheses. Instead, it uses three observational generalizations—Variability, Heritability and Differential Reproduction—along with an innocuous assumption of Causal Efficacy, to derive Adaptive Evolution as a necessary consequence. Adaptive Evolution in turn, with one assumption of scale (‘Deep (...) Time’), implies the observational generalization of Adaptation. It is a fascinating methodological task to regiment the premises and make the reasoning both rigorous and clear. Doing so reveals how surprisingly small an amount of mathematics is needed in order to carry out the argument. The investigation also reveals the crucial role played by heritability, and how heritability itself admits of Darwinian explanation. (shrink)

The research aim is to predict popular psychology based on perfectionism, cognitive style, and emotional schema. The population of the study included men, and women aged 20 to 60 living in the city. According to Krejcie & Morgan’s table, 383 people were selected using a non-proportional stratified random sampling method. To collect data, a popular psychology questionnaire, Hill’s perfectionism questionnaire, Leahy’s emotional schema questionnaire, and Witkin’s cognitive style test were employed. The results showed that there was a significant (...) and positive impact of perfectionism (The Beta coefficient = 0.18, p-value < 0.05) and emotional schema (The Beta coefficient = 0.30, p-value < 0.05) on popular psychology; while there was no correlation between cognitive style and popular psychology which its equation can be presented as PP = 0.3ES + 0.18P + 1.11. Regarding the model, R2 = 0.14 indicates that the model explains 14% of the variances in popular psychology. (shrink)

This article examines how cultural schema theory has been employed to explore some aspects of Aboriginal English oral discourse. The merit of this approach lies in the explanatory tools provided by cultural schema theory in accounting for those features of oral discourse in Aboriginal English which are distinctive and which often impair its lucidity to non-Aboriginal speakers. In particular, we have focused on the exploration of recurrent semantic and formal patterning across a large body of narratives, evidence of (...) speakers' use of indigenous schemas in associative responses as well as in processing oral narrative, and schema maintenance in discourse in non-traditional settings and in the context of non-traditional subjects. This new volume on logic follows a recognizable format that deals in turn with the topics of mathematical logic, moving from concepts, via definitions and inferences, to theories and axioms. However, this fresh work offers a key innovation in its ‘pyramidal’ graph system for the logical formalization of all these items. The author has developed this new methodology on the basis of original research, traditional logical instruments such as Porphyrian trees, and modern concepts of classification, in which pyramids are the (...) central organizing concept. The pyramidal schema enables both the content of concepts and the relations between the concept positions in the pyramid to be read off from the graph. Logical connectors are analyzed in terms of the direction in which they connect within the pyramid. Additionally, the author shows that logical connectors are of fundamentally different types: only one sort generates propositions with truth values, while the other yields conceptual expressions or complex concepts. On this basis, strong arguments are developed against adopting the non-discriminating connector definitions implicit in Wittgensteinian truth-value tables. Special consideration is given to mathematical connectors so as to illuminate the formation of concepts in the natural sciences. To show what the pyramidal method can contribute to science, a pyramid of the number concepts prevalent in mathematics is constructed. The book also counters the logical dogma of ‘false’ contradictory propositions and sheds new light on the logical characteristics of probable propositions, as well as on syllogistic and other inferences. Why might it be beneficial for adults to process fractions componentially? Recent research has shown that college-educated adults can capitalize on the bipartite structure of the fraction notation, performing more successfully with fractions than with decimals in relational tasks, notably analogical reasoning. This study examined patterns of relational priming for problems with fractions in a task that required arithmetic computations. College students were asked to judge whether or not multiplication equations involving fractions were correct. Some equations served as structurally inverse (...) primes for the equation that immediately followed it. Students with relatively high math ability showed relational priming both with and without high perceptual similarity. Students with relatively low math ability also showed priming, but only when the structurally inverse equation pairs were supported by high perceptual similarity between numbers. Several additional experiments established boundary conditions on relational priming with fractions. These findings are interpreted in terms of componential processing of fractions in a relational multiplication context that takes advantage of their inherent connections to a multiplicative schema for whole numbers. In much of modern scholarship, the notion of datong 大通 in Zhuangzi’s famous zuowang 坐忘 (sitting in disregard) passage is often interpreted as either Dao or a mental/spiritual state of an ideal person, a person who has obtained Dao. In either case, however, the association between datong and such interpretation lacks detailed justification resulting from an insufficiently understood relation between datong and its immediately preceding statements. Different from the more common readings, I propose a cognitive approach based on an image (...) schema related to non-obstruction. In order to demonstrate the philosophical importance of this schema, I will first briefly point out the problems of previous scholarship regarding the zuowang passage. Second, I will introduce the image schema related to non-obstruction based on a number of examples taken from the Zhuangzi. Finally, I will apply this methodology and introduce a cognitive experience-based interpretation of the zuowang passage. (shrink)

In this paper, I explicate and discuss performance-similarity reasoning as a strategy for mechanism schema evaluation, understood in Lindley Darden’s sense. This strategy involves inferring hypotheses about the mechanism responsible for cognitive capacities from premises describing the performance of those capacities; performance-similarity reasoning is a type of Inference to the Best Explanation, or IBE. Two types of such inferences are distinguished: one in which the performance of two systems is compared, and another when the performance of two systems under (...) intervention is compared. Both types of inferences are illustrated with examples taken from cognitive science. I conclude that performance-similarity reasoning is an important strategy for evaluating mechanistic hypotheses. This study examined the performances of three groups of participants in interpreting metaphors in three different conditions: congruent gesture-prime conditions, opposite gesture-prime conditions, and no-prime conditions. In congruent gesture-prime conditions, each metaphor was preceded by the congruent gestural representation of metaphor schema. In opposite gesture-prime conditions, each metaphor was preceded by the opposite gestural representation of metaphor schema. The results showed that participants of congruent gesture-prime conditions had the best performance in interpreting metaphors, while participants of opposite gesture-prime (...) conditions had the worst performance. It is suggested that metaphor schema is an important part of metaphorical meaning of a metaphor. Therefore, when this part of meaning is activated by a gestural prime, metaphor comprehension is facilitated. Furthermore, when a schema is used to metaphorically describe a concept or an event, that schema and the neural network that represents it become one part of a larger interconnected neural network that represents the meaning of the metaphor. It could mean that the activation of one part of it could facilitate the activation of the whole of the network. Finally, it is emphasized that a gesture that depicts the schema of a metaphor is in fact the embodied realization of that metaphor. (shrink)

Questo articolo s’interroga sulle ragioni del loro ordine gerarchico: _ praedicatores _ all’apice, _ continentes _ in una posizione intermedia e _ coniugati _ all’ultimo gradino dello schema. A partire da un’analisi di queste tre figure, l’articolo pone in evidenza la loro (...) relazione con le nozioni di vita attiva e di vita contemplativa. In particolare, le configurazioni della gerarchia tra azione e contemplazione emergono come decisive nella comprensione dell’ordine ecclesiologico dei _ tres ordines fidelium _. Tali configurazioni sono illustrate tramite i concetti di ordine e contrordine. Difatti, se da una parte Gregorio ammette generalmente la superiorità della vita contemplativa su quella attiva ( ???? ordine), dall’altra egli considera una forma di vita composita, che unisce azione e contemplazione, come la più elevata ( ???? contrordine). Queste considerazioni paiono spiegare perché, nonostante la vita contemplativa dei _ continentes _ sia giudicata superiore a quella attiva dei _ coniugati _, la vita composita dei _ praedicatores _ occupi la sommità della gerarchia. In conclusione, l’articolo pone in rilievo il ruolo trasversale di vita attiva e di vita contemplativa rispetto alla struttura dei _ tres ordines fidelium _. Rappresentando due istanze che caratterizzano le forme di vita di ciascun _ ordo _, esse rivelano come lo schema dei _ tres ordines fidelium _ esprima al contempo le componenti antropologiche della Chiesa e tre paradigmi di progresso spirituale. _ In the writings of Gregory the Great, the _ tres ordines fidelium _ scheme ( _ praedicatores-continentes-coniugati _ ) delineates the three forms of life that constitute the Church. This article investigates the reasons behind their hierarchical order: _ praedicatores _ at the pinnacle, _ continentes _ in the middle, and _ coniugati _ at the bottom of the scheme. Starting from an analysis of these three figures, the article underscores their relationship with the concepts of active life and contemplative life. Specifically, the configurations of the hierarchy between action and contemplation emerge as crucial to understanding the ecclesiological order of the _ tres ordines fidelium _. These configurations are elucidated through the concepts of order and counter-order. In fact, while Gregory generally acknowledges the superiority of the contemplative life over the active life ( __ ???? _ _ order), he regards a mixed life that integrates action and contemplation as the highest form of life ( __ ???? _ _ counter-order). These observations seem to justify why, although the contemplative life of _ continentes _ is deemed superior to the active life of _ coniugati _, the mixed life of _ praedicatores _ ascends the top of the hierarchy. In the concluding section, the article emphasizes the transversal role of active and contemplative life in the structure of the _ tres ordines fidelium _. Representing two aspects that characterize the forms of life of each _ ordo _, they reveal how the scheme of the _ tres ordines fidelium _ simultaneously expresses the anthropological components of the Church and three paradigms of spiritual progress. _. Summary The present paper constitutes an elaboration of a previous work by one of us which, among other things, proposed some modifications of Popper's tetradic schema. Here, in the first part, we consider critically and develop further these modifications and elaborate on methods which prove more satisfactory for the mapping of the problem solving processes in Physics. We also find the opportunity to make some comments on Physics and on its relation to Mathematics. In the second part, there is (...) an attempt to test the above ideas on the genesis and development of the Special Relativity Theory. In doing this, we concentrate mainly on Einstein's 1905 paper and try to explicitate its relation with the situation Physics found itself in that period as well as to clarify the epistemological status of Einstein's two postulates. If we analyze the early historical evolution of the concept of eddy or vortex, it can be shown that it constitutes a mental schema and a powerful heuristic instrument in scientific thinking, with the intuitive properties of rotation and dissipation. This mental schema presents a great capacity to constitute a fruitful analogical source and to develop an analogical inference. For example, Descartes considered celestial vortexes to explain planetary motion, or Maxwell developed the electromagnetic theory via a model based (...) on rotating vortexes. But there were more creative and detailed uses of the eddy schema which had great importance as a cooperative heuristic instrument, instead of as a mere expedient analogy. I will present two episodes to underline the activation via provocative analogy of the eddy schema, multiple roles that it can play and its heuristic adaptability: first, the eureka visualization of an eddy by Johann Bernoulli in the genesis of fluid dynamics; and second, Reynolds’s discovery of the importance of eddies to understand the dynamic and resistance of flow. Dijkerman & de Haan (D&dH) argue that body image and body schema form parts of different and dissociable somatosensory streams. We agree in general, but believe that more emphasis should be placed on interactions between these two streams. We illustrate this point with evidence from the rubber-hand illusion (RHI) – an illusion of body image, which depends critically upon body schema.

The present study tested the existence of a cognitive schema that guides people's evaluations of the likelihood that observed problem-solving processes will succeed. The hypothesised schema consisted of attributes that were found to distinguish between retrospective case reports of successful and unsuccessful real world problem solving (Lipshitz & Bar Ilan, 1996). Participants were asked to evaluate the likelihood of success of identical cases of problem solving that differed in the presence or absence of diagnosis, the selection of appropriate (...) or inappropriate solutions, and the pairing of diagnosis with appropriate or non-appropriate solutions. Consistent with the proposition, diagnosis affected perceived likelihood of success, albeit only when solution quality was held constant, and appropriate diagnosis with a compatible solution produced higher perceived likelihood of success than appropriate diagnosis with incompatible solutions. In addition, results showed that solution quality played a significant role, and that compatibility with a six-phase rational model of problem solving played no role in judging likelihood of success. Personality disorders are usually treated with face-to-face sessions and/or digital mental health services. Among many schools of therapies, schema therapy stands out because rather than simply targeting the symptoms of PD, it cordially targets the cause of PD and heals the early maladaptive schema, thus is exceptionally good at soothing emotional disturbances before enacting cognitive restructuring, resulting in long-term efficacy. However, according to Piaget’s genetic epistemology, the unmet needs lie in the fact that the schemata that determine the (...) adaptive behavior can only be formed in the interaction with the real world that the patient is living in and reconsolidated by the feedback from the object world upon the patient’s newly-formed behavior. Therefore, in order to reshape the patient’s schema modes to support adaptive behavior and regain emotional regulation capabilities of the healthy adult, one may have to reconstruct the object world surrounding the patient. Metaverse, the bestowed successor to the Internet with the cardinal feature of “the sense of full presence,” can become a powerful tool to reconstruct a new object world for the patient with the prescription of a psychotherapist, so as to transform the treatment techniques in schema therapy into the natural autobiographical experiences of patients in the new object world, thus gradually reshape the patient’s schema modes that can ultimately result in an adaptive, and more inclusive, interaction with the real world. This work describes the underlying theory, the mechanism, the process, and ethical considerations of such promising technology for the not-too-far future. (shrink)

ObjectiveThe current study examined whether compliance with anti-pandemic measures during the COVID-19 pandemic relates to importance of the fulfillment of core psychological needs, namely, relationship, self-esteem, efficacy, and pleasure; coping behavior styles, namely, surrender, self-soothing, divert attention, and confrontation; and worries or concerns beyond COVID-19 which may impair wellbeing.MethodsThis study used a cross-sectional design and online survey data from responses to a structured questionnaire developed within the theoretical framework of schema-based psychotherapy on psychological needs and coping behavior styles from (...) 740 participants in Central Europe and West Africa.ResultsAnalysis indicated that people with the psychological needs of “pleasure” and “efficacy” and the coping style of “surrender” were more likely to comply with anti-pandemic measures. We also found that people with the coping style of “confrontation” were less likely to comply. There were no statistically significant relationships between compliance and “relationship,” “self-esteem,” “self-soothing,” “divert attention,” and “existential concerns.”DiscussionOur findings indicate that how likely a given individual is to comply with prescribed pandemic countermeasures varies based on their specific psychological needs and behavior styles. Therefore, to control contagion during a pandemic, authorities must recognize the relevance of human need fulfillment and their behavior styles and accordingly highlight and encourage admissible and feasible actions. The findings demonstrate that some individual differences in core psychological needs and coping behavior patterns predict compliance behavior. (shrink)

We argue that the body schema may become accessible to consciousness in some circumstances, possibly resulting from cross talk, but that this may be detrimental to skilled movement production.

In the first paragraph, the focus is on the early Wittgenstein's conception of truth: the Disquotational Schema is shown to be derivable from the semantic and ontological principles of the picture theory. Then, the article scrutinises the way the Disquotational Schema provides the basis for what the later Wittgenstein takes as a philosophically appropriate description of the practice of making assertions. The general abstract notion of truth makes room for a situated notion of warranted assertibility as the key-notion. (...) Quest after values and their realization constitute innate necessity for human being. This presupposes knowledge of Reality and knowledge of the value-schema. In this context, a distinction can be drawn between descriptive awareness of Reality and prescriptive awareness of Values. For the latter, the pῡrva mimāmsā system postulates ‘codanā’ as a means of knowledge. In Indian Culture, two types of values are enunciated, viz. preyas and śreyas. The Taittirῑya upaniṣad puts forth a five-dimensional theory of human constitution and accordingly (...) advocates a fivefold value-schema. In general, theory of puruṣartha has been accepted by all the cultural traditions of India with variant details. It would be interesting and enlightening to discuss different aspects and issues concerning this theory. Knowledgeable scholars may delineate on related issues as well. (shrink)

This paper aims to establish the origin of the narrative schema in the perception of intentional movements. The distinction between mechanical and intentional movements is vital for human beings, and the narrative schema, which is underpinned by this distinction, is therefore a basic cognitive principle of intelligibility. This is the reason why the narrative schema is by no means confined to the domain of the literary work of art. It is rather a major principle for the combination (...) of partial significations in many other domains. The paper explores the role traditionally assigned to the narrative schema within continental semiotics and, through an interpretation of Heider and Simmel's study on apparent behavior, it establishes the cognitive import of the narrative schema and its origin in visual perception; finally, it gives examples of the meaning organizing import of the narrative schema. Dieser Sammelband bietet eine interdisziplinäre und kritisch fundierte Auseinandersetzung mit dem Toulmin-Schema als Modell der Argumentationsanalyse und -förderung in Schule und Hochschule. Das Toulmin-Schema ist in vielen Fachdidaktiken etabliert und dient dort als Werkzeug, um Argumentationsstrukturen sichtbar zu machen und argumentative Kompetenzen gezielt zu fördern. Zugleich zeigt sich eine wachsende Kluft zwischen seiner prominenten Rolle in der Unterrichtspraxis und der kritischen Bewertung in der aktuellen argumentationstheoretischen Debatte. Vor diesem Hintergrund versammelt der Band Beiträge aus der Philosophie-, Deutsch- und (...) Geographiedidaktik, die das Toulmin-Schema aus verschiedenen fachlichen Blickwinkeln beleuchten, seine Potenziale und Grenzen analysieren sowie Alternativen aufzeigen. Die Beiträge gehen dabei unterschiedlichen Fragen nach: Welche Argumentationsmodelle sind für den Unterricht geeignet? Inwiefern lässt sich das Toulmin-Schema didaktisch anschlussfähig operationalisieren? Wie wird mit argumentativen Strukturen in unterrichtlichen Kontexten tatsächlich gearbeitet?
