Acceptable analyticities, i.e. contradictions or tautologies, constitute problematic evidence for the idea that language includes a deductive system. In recent discussion, two accounts have been presented in the literature to explain the available evidence. According to one of the accounts, grammatical analyticities are accessible to the system but a pragmatic strengthening repair mechanism can apply and prevent the structures from being actually interpreted as contradictions or tautologies. The proposed data, however, leaves it open whether other versions of the meaning modulation (...) operation are required. Novel evidence we present argues that a loosening version of the repair mechanism must be available. Our observation concerns acceptable lexical contradictions that cannot be rescued if only a strengthening version of the pragmatic strategy is available. (shrink)

In this paper we focus on the logicality of language, i.e. the idea that the language system contains a deductive device to exclude analytic constructions. Puzzling evidence for the logicality of language comes from acceptable contradictions and tautologies. The standard response in the literature involves assuming that the language system only accesses analyticities that are due to skeletons as opposed to standard logical forms. In this paper we submit evidence in support of alternative accounts of logicality, which reject the stipulation (...) of a natural logic and assume instead the meaning modulation of nonlogical terms. This note focuses on the interaction between logic and grammar and discusses whether logical rules are irrelevant for syntactic formation. Classical evidence for the independence of syntax from logic comes from the acceptability of analytic propositions. Based on this piece of evidence, various authors in traditional discussions pronounced that language is illogical. This note focuses instead on two ways to oppose such pronouncements. In Gramscian linguistics, one can maintain that language is not illogical by broadening the notion of language one (...) adopts. In an alternative account we submit, one can oppose those pronouncements by restricting the notion of analyticity which is assumed to be relevant for syntactic formation. (shrink)

In this paper, I defend a grammatical account of scalar implicatures. In particular, I submit new evidence in favor of the contextual blindness principle, assumed in recent versions of the grammatical account. I argue that mismatching scalar implicatures can be generated even when the restrictor of the universal quantifier in a universal alternative is contextually known to be empty. The crucial evidence consists of a hitherto unnoticed oddness asymmetry between formally analogous existential sentences with reference failure NPs. Il volume introduce una nuova prospettiva sul rapporto tra senso e controsenso nelle lingue naturali. Le concezioni tradizionali attribuivano alla grammatica il compito di definire l’ambito della sensatezza linguistica – di ciò che ha senso dire in una data lingua – e presumevano che nel far ciò essa ammettesse come possibili (e quindi sensate) strutture che non trasmettono informazioni significative sul mondo. È il caso delle contraddizioni classiche, che non a caso i parlanti giudicano ammissibili benché letteralmente “controsense”. Eppure, la (...) ricerca più recente intorno alla logica delle lingue naturali ha portato alla luce l’esistenza di strutture che vengono giudicate inammissibili proprio perché non sono informative; a differenza delle strutture classiche, in questi casi la mancanza di informatività non può essere risolta per mezzo di reinterpretazioni contestuali. Il libro riflette sulle implicazioni teoriche di tali risultati, che integra criticamente nel contesto delle discussioni filosofiche (Husserl, Carnap, ma anche Benedetto Croce) e linguistiche (Chomsky, evidentemente, ma anche Richard Montague). Giunge ad affermare la presenza nelle lingue di una naturale inclinazione all’informatività, che determina un allargamento per via pratica delle loro possibilità espressive. Even-like particles have widely been analyzed as inducing scalar and additive presuppositions (cf. Horn 1969; Karttunen & Peters 1979; Rooth 1992; Gast & van der Auwera 2011). However, the additivity of even has been controversial since at least Horn 1992 and increasingly called into question (see Greenberg & Umbach 2021 for references); Greenberg specifically argues that scalar even-like particles can vary in additivity. This claim is surprising in light of the typological study in Gast & van der Auwera 2011, which (...) subsumes even and similar expressions under a larger class of additive particles. Against this background, we present an analysis of Italian addirittura, which with perfino has been described as scalar-additive (Visconti 2005) – but only optionally so – and is chosen preferentially over perfino precisely in those contexts that Greenberg takes to challenge the additivity of even. We argue, drawing on observations in Atayan 2017, that addirittura contrasts with perfino in deriving its scalar alternatives from rhetorical structure rather than focus structure. Once this is recognized we can view addirittura as additive, after all, in a rhetorical sense we describe below. (shrink)

This book discusses developments in the study of implicatures and presuppositions, drawing on recent linguistic and psycholinguistic literature. It provides original discussions of specific formal aspects of the theoretical reconstruction of these phenomena. The authors offer innovative experimental analyses in which crucial processing questions are addressed, and new experimental methodologies are introduced. The result is an advanced debate featuring broad empirical coverage of the issues, as well as an informed discussion of the connections between a Compositional Semantics and a Pragmatic (...) Theory of Implicit Communication, in light of the empirical data coming from Experimental Semantics and Pragmatics. Building on Łukasiewicz’s recognition of a psychological formulation of the contradiction principle in Aristotle, in this note we explore the possibility of an alternative treatment of the principle, which is still based on understanding it as a psychical function. We assume the recent logicality of language hypothesis, which proposes that the rules of formation in natural languages are sensitive to logical considerations, to the point that some contradictory structures are taken to be excluded as ungrammatical precisely due to their logical (...) status. Based on the inclusion of the hypothesis within a mentalistic conception of the language system, we note that in the account rejecting a contradiction does not imply any conscious recognition by speakers; we then speculate that it is possible to overcome Łukasiewicz’s criticism, to the effect that the psychological principle cannot be an empirical law, by adopting a universalistic assumption of the «constitutional uniformity of individuals». Negli ultimi quindici anni la letteratura filosofico-linguistica ha registrato un rinnovato interesse per i meccanismi di implicatura, specialmente del tipo scalare. In buona parte, l’interesse stato suscitato dall’emergere di una prospettiva grammaticale, secondo la quale i fenomeni di implicatura scalare sarebbero conseguenza di un meccanismo interpretativo incassato nella logica delle lingue naturali, e quindi riferibile al componente semantico dell’architettura cognitiva umana. L’obiettivo di questo testo fornire una presentazione di alcuni tra gli argomenti che hanno motivato l’emergere della prospettiva grammaticale. Inizieremo, (...) con una descrizione del fenomeno di implicatura scalare, sostanzialmente condivisa dai fautori delle diverse prospettive. Quindi, approfondiremo la nostra comprensione del fenomeno, pre- sentando alcuni punti fermi della prospettiva pragmaticista, e mostrandone i punti di debolezza individuati dai fautori della prospettiva grammaticale. Nell’analisi, la stipulazione di una pragmatica musicale segue strettamente recenti proposte presentate in ambito semantico, in cui si illustrano le potenziali virtù rappresentazionali delle strutture musicali. In particolare, in questa nota si suggerisce la presenza di strategie di ricostruzione dei significati musicali le quali intervengono a prevenire la realizzazione di contenuti semantici contraddittori. L’evidenza utilizzata è ricavata da alcune misure del madrigale primo del II libro dei (...) madrigali di Monteverdi (1590), e dal testo (di T. This contribution aims to highlight a conflict between two notions of information within the logicality of language literature – one concerning grammaticality and the other concerning scalar implicatures – and to argue in favour of one of two possible solutions. We suggest that the right notion of information for logicality is halfway between the one introduced by Bar-Hillel and Carnap and the one defended by Floridi. In this way, both tautological and contradictory constructions turn out to be uninformative, but for (...) different reasons. This, in turn, grounds the novel prediction that speakers will judge differently the grade of unacceptability of the two kinds of constructions. (shrink)

In this paper I describe how the authors involved in the scalar implicatures debate develop only partially co-extensional theories of scalar implicatures starting from a common range of core facts. I consider three components of the scalar implicature mechanism: the exhaustivity operator, the alternatives generation and the avoid-contradiction procedures.

La investigación que se expone, realizada en Chile, se vincula a la vivencia de ciudadanía en niños y niñas en el espacio escolar, a través de la configuración de “lo común” como plataforma de cohesión social. El diseño metodológico corresponde a estudio de casos múltiples, correspondiente a ocho centros escolares de primaria. El análisis de los registros de observación, entrevistas y documentos, nos permitieron levantar tres grandes categorías: La categoría denominada, “alteridad” con las subcategorías de sumisión/dominación, discriminación por género y (...) estética. La segunda gran categoría llamada: “lo común”, con líneas discursivas vinculadas al sentido de pertenencia, participación, democracia, sociabilidad y control normativo. Y por último, “Identidad”, vinculada a prestigio social y autonomía versus dependencia. Los estudiantes configuran distintas identidades de prestigio social según clase, el cual obedece a un estereotipo normativo configurado por el adulto, como formas de control para el mantenimiento del orden desde el “poder oficial” en la escuela y que impacta en el horizonte ideológico, ético político de las representaciones simbólicas de niños y niñas de ausencia de vivencia de ciudadanía en la escuela primaria. Autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) involve complex interactions between local tissues and the immune system. Here, we highlight the immunological parallels between the central nervous system (CNS) meninges and the synovial joint, two sites traditionally considered immune‐privileged. Both harbor resident immune cells and lymphatic vessels and support the formation of tertiary lymphoid organs (TLO) during chronic inflammation. In MS, meningeal TLO contributes to cortical grey matter damage, while in RA, synovial TLO drives joint destruction. (...) T peripheral helper (Tph) cells, a subset of CD4+ T cells, are key players in both conditions by supporting B cell activation and autoantibody production. Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) infection, particularly in B cells within TLO, is implicated in the pathogenesis of both diseases. Targeting EBV‐infected B cells, depleting Tph cells, or disrupting TLO represent promising therapeutic strategies for controlling disease progression and severity in MS and RA. (shrink)

Tekste pristatomi didžiausią įtaką subkultūrų tyrimams padarę antropologų, etnologų ir sociologų darbai, aptariamos pagrindinės autorių idėjos. Empirinėje straipsnio dalyje susitelkiama į „subkultūros“ ir „subkultūros nario“ sampratų vartoseną ir joms teikiamas reikšmes Lietuvos pankų subkultūroje.

RésuméDans le présent article, on expose la théorie aristotélicienne des comètes, bien diffusée en Occident musulman par le biais des commentaires d'Ibn Rušd et d'Ibn Bāǧǧa, et abordée trois siècles plus tard dans un manuscrit inédit attribué au fameux mathématicien Ibn Ġāzī al-Miknāsī. Dans ce traité qui ne figure pas dans la liste connue de ses écrits, Ibn Ġāzī traite de l'astrologie des comètes suivant Ptolémée, et insére une critique attribuée à Iḫwān al-Ṣafā’, caractérisée par le rejet de l'idée des (...) comètes sidérales. On s'intéresse également aux classifications des comètes données par Ibn Ġāzī et un autre auteur peu connu ‘Alī al-Antākī. Ainsi, nous avons constaté que le contenu du De cometis du pseudo-Ptolémée est analogue au le texte d'Ibn Ġāzī, et pratiquement identique au texte d'al-Antākī. Par la suite, on analyse les observations de comètes réalisées du ixe jusqu’à la fin du xixe s. en Afrique du Nord et en Espagne musulmane, et consignées dans certains manuscrits d'astronomie et chroniques en langue arabe, mais qui n'ont jamais fait l'objet d’études approfondies. Les observations étudiées sont : les deux comètes X/975 P1 et X/998 D1 signalées par un auteur anonyme du xve s., l'observation de la comète X/1381 V1 rapportée par Ibn al- Qāḍī, le passage de la comète de Halley en 1456 rapporté par Muḥammad al-Zarkašī, la comète en C/1743 X1 observée par ‘Abd al-Razzāq ibn Ḥamadūš, et qui confirme sa structure en éventail, les deux observations de Ibn ‘Alī al-Šrīf al-Šalāṭī de la D/1770 L1, et surtout son témoignage concernant la C/1769 P1 où il a inséré une représentation graphique inédite en Occident musulman. The present paper presents experimental evidence confirming that contextually mismatching scalar implicatures can be generated even when quantifiers range over empty domains. In the literature, this possibility has been interpreted as providing further evidence for a grammatical approach to scalar implicatures. The main result presented here is that scalar sentences with empty domains are judged as more infelicitous when associated with a mismatching implicature than variants with the same empty domains but associated with a non-mismatching implicature. We interpret this result (...) as suggesting that the infelicity judgment associated with the first kind of sentence stems from the cumulative effect of the mismatching implicature and the contextual domain emptiness. Compared to previous literature on blind implicatures, our results indicate that the body of knowledge involved in relevance assignments is restricted to ignoring existential determination while still considering the properties attributed to nonexistent entities. They also show that, while not blocking implicature generation, contextual domain emptiness plays a role in speakers’ evaluation of scalar sentences, reflecting the unconscious nature of scalar implicature generation. The aim of this research was to set a proposed strategy for achieving institutional integrity in the University of Ha’il (UoH), Saudi Arabia, in the light of the National Centre of Assessment and Academic Accreditation (NCAAA) Standards. This was accomplished through acknowledging theoretical and philosophical frameworks of institutional integrity and their obstacles in university educational institutions and displaying the institutional standards of the National Centre of Assessment and Academic Accreditation. This research depended on the descriptive method and employed the (SWOT) (...) Analysis to examine the status of UoH. The research confirmed that UoH implemented policies to support institutional values and research integrity. Furthermore, the university has employed mechanisms and procedures for institutional values and mentorships and has a declared policy for disclosure of information and access of necessary information to all beneficiaries. The university needs to set some mechanisms in place to ensure fairness and equality in performance assessments or to implement integrity standards in processes of employment and recruitment. Obesity is characterized by the accumulation of an excessive amount of fat mass in the adipose tissue, subcutaneous, or inside certain organs. The risk does not lie so much in the amount of fat accumulated as in its distribution. Abdominal obesity is an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer, having an important role in the so-called metabolic syndrome. Therefore, it is necessary to prevent, detect, and appropriately treat obesity. The diagnosis is based on anthropometric indices that have (...) been associated with adiposity and its distribution. Indices themselves, or a combination of some of them, conform to a big picture with different values to establish risk. Anthropometric indices can be used for risk identification, intervention, or impact evaluation on nutritional status or health; therefore, they will be called anthropometric health indicators. We have found 17 AHIs that can be obtained or estimated from 3D human shapes, being a noninvasive alternative compared to X-ray-based systems, and more accessible than high-cost equipment. A literature review has been conducted to analyze the following information for each indicator: definition; main calculation or obtaining methods used; health aspects associated with the indicator ; criteria to classify the population by means of percentiles or cutoff points, and based on variables such as sex, age, ethnicity, or geographic area, and limitations. Background Shared decision-making at the threshold of viability is one of the most ethically complex areas of neonatal practice. For neonatal nurses, involvement is shaped by uncertainty, infant suffering, parental vulnerability, hierarchy, and enduring moral responsibility. Aim To explore neonatal nurses’ experiences of shared decision-making with families of periviable infants in Level III neonatal intensive care units, with particular attention to ethical tensions, moral responsibilities, and practice-based challenges. Research design A qualitative Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis study informed by relational ethics. Data (...) were generated through individual semi-structured, in-depth interviews, which were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed ideographically using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Participants and research context Twelve registered neonatal nurses were purposively recruited from four Level III neonatal intensive care units in one administrative region of Saudi Arabia. All had direct experience caring for periviable infants and participating in decision-making about life-sustaining treatment. Ethical considerations Ethical approval was obtained from the Jouf University Institutional Review Board and the relevant committees of the participating hospitals. Participation was voluntary; written informed consent was obtained; and confidentiality and potential power imbalances were carefully managed. Findings Four superordinate themes were developed: living at the edge of uncertainty and bearing witness to suffering; being morally responsible but not fully authorised; holding families through fractured decision-making; and negotiating ethical practice within institutional and cultural worlds. Nurses described periviable shared decision-making as an ethically complex practice in which uncertainty, constrained authority, relational labour, and moral residue were continuously negotiated. Conclusions Neonatal nurses occupy a central but often insufficiently recognised ethical position in periviable shared decision-making. Ethical practice at the threshold of viability requires structures that recognise nurses’ moral agency, relational work, and ongoing responsibility within interprofessional decision-making and its aftermath. A partir du renvoi à la « maxime de Platon » insérée dans l’avant dernière page de la première édition de L’interprétation du rêve, l’auteur expose d’abord les convergences entre la conception du rêve de Platon présentée dans La République et les intuitions qui fondent l’édifice métapsychologique freudien. A la lumière des sources textuelles citées par Freud et de ses intérêts, l’auteur avance ensuite l’hypothèse selon laquelle Freud aurait non seulement omis de reconnaître la généalogie théorétique platonicienne de la « (...) via regia menant à la connaissance de l’inconscient », mais aussi utilisé le dialogue antique comme source d’inspiration tacite pour la composition de L’Interprétation du rêve.
