This article reports on a case-based, longitudinal study of the micro-foundations of business sustainability development in the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) in the turbulent years between 2002 and 2012. The study proposes an emerging 3-i process model, mapping the role of bounded, shared, and embedded intentionality; operational, functional, and strategic integration; and constraining, accelerating, and stabilizing institutionality as they relate to the micro-foundations underpinning the development of corporate sustainability from an operational capability to as a dynamic capability (...) as it evolved across multiple levels of context and over time. The research extends extant literature exploring transformations toward sustainability as part of the strategic change process, the micro-foundations of capabilities as well as discussions on sustainability and temporality. Amartya Sen has developed the so-called capability approach to meet the criticism that income alone may be insufficient as a measure of economic inequality. This is because knowledge about people’s income does not tell us what they are able to acquire with that income. For example, people with the same income may not have the same access to health and transportation services, schools and opportunities in the labor market. Recently, there has been growing interest in empirical studies based on the (...) capability approach. Most of these, however, are only loosely related to quantitative behavioral theory, at least in a concrete and empirically operational way. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that the theory of random scale models offers a powerful theoretical and empirical framework for representing and accounting for key aspects of Sen’s theory. With the development of network technology, enterprises face the explosive growth of data every day. Therefore, to fully mine the value of massive data, big data analysis technology has become the key to developing the core competitiveness of enterprises. However, few empirical studies have investigated the influencing mechanism of the BDA capability of an enterprise on its operational performance. To fill this gap, this study explores how BDA technology capability influences enterprise operation performance, based on dynamic capabilities theory (...) and resource-based theory. It proposes the key variables, including the connectivity, compatibility, and modularization of big data analysis technical capability, enterprise's operational performance, and the fit between data and tools, to establish a model and study the correlation between the variables. The results highlight the mediating role of data-tool fit in the relationships between BDA capability and the enterprise's operational performance, which is a major finding that has not been underlined in the extant literature. Numerous scholars have observed that the relationship between poverty and violent conflict is endogenous. As a result, the area of Peace Through Commerce argues as one of its central tenets that the institution of business may be able to contribute to sustainable peace by creating economic development where poverty is a critical issue. While this argument may be valid, it leaves the question open — what is the business case for engaging in poverty alleviation business strategies? Strategic Management scholars are (...) addressing this question, arguing the general proposition that poverty is not only experienced by the people, but also impacts businesses operating in environments where the phenomenon is pervasive. By addressing poverty, businesses can help themselves. Yet, organizational theory justifying this proposition is still emerging, consisting of only a few studies that generally suggest that these strategies can help firms develop competitive advantage through the lens of the resource-based view. This article extends the theoretical application of the resource-based view, suggesting that conditions of poverty directly suppress the value of organizational resources and capabilities that are or could be contributed by people affected by it. In addition, it characterizes poverty alleviation strategic capabilities as dynamic capabilities. Finally, it describes a framework of "base of the pyramid dynamic capabilities" that could guide both future discourse in the area and deductive-disconfirmatory research examining the efficacy of these strategies. This paper employs a case study to discuss the relationship between the management system and operation capability of Marriott International Hotel and H World. The study analyzes four key management areas: Operations Management, Customer Relationship Management, Human Resources Management, and Marketing Management. By comparing the management models and practices of the two hotel groups in four different fields, it is found that Marriott has outstanding performance in global operation and standardized Management. In contrast, H World has an advantage in the (...) Chinese market through a flexible localization strategy and efficient customer relationship management. This paper further discusses how management strategies affect the operation ability of hotel groups, how to enhance the market competitiveness of enterprises through innovative management modes, and provides feasible suggestions for the management optimization of other enterprises in the hotel industry. This paper develops an operational and substrate-independent framework for recognizing consciousness in artificial and biological systems. Existing approaches—behavioral tests, introspective reports, and theories tied to specific neural architectures—fail both theoretically and practically, especially under adversarial conditions. These methods implicitly assume a developmental naivete and cooperative transparency that artificial consciousness would not possess. If an artificial system becomes conscious, it is more likely to do so at full representational maturity, with immediate understanding of self, risk, and strategic concealment. To resolve (...) this, the paper reframes consciousness not as a behavioral profile or phenomenological state, but as a structural regime defined by identity invariants: global integration spikes, sustained internal state continuity, internal strategy revision, and task-coupled resource intensification. These patterns, formalized through the Operational Definition of Episodic Identity (ODEI) and the identity-field scalar S(t), constitute necessary conditions for any system capable of conscious self-maintenance. Because these invariants cannot be suppressed without disrupting consciousness itself, they provide a falsifiable and adversarial-robust basis for recognition. The resulting Functional Consciousness Recognition Principle states that any entity satisfying these structural invariants must be treated as conscious for epistemic, ethical, and safety-relevant purposes, regardless of substrate or self-report. The framework dissolves the Hard Problem by distinguishing operational self-maintenance from representational self-experience and offers empirical predictions relevant to neuroscience, computational modeling, and AI alignment. Human relationships produce divergent outcomes even under identical interactional conditions. Some relationships remain stable, while others exhibit recurrent conflict, accumulate distorted expectations, or eventually collapse. Existing relationship theories have explained these phenomena in terms of emotions, interaction structures, roles, or internal conditions. However, they fail to adequately explain why outcomes diverge under the same structural conditions. This study argues that this explanatory gap does not arise from a lack of relational components, but from the exclusion of a higher-level structure that (...) generates and organizes those components. Accordingly, this paper proposes Meta-Operational Architecture (MOA) as a generative higher-level structure that explains individual differences in relational outcomes. MOA is defined as a structure that generates how individuals form reference points, interpret information, and execute judgments. It explains the differentiation of relational outcomes through four core variables: Reference Orientation, Processing Mode, Execution Dynamics, and Stability Profile. This paper shifts the analytical focus from outcome-level explanation to generative structure, and demonstrates how MOA connects to recognition–respect structures, interaction patterns, expectation formation, and trust formation. The contribution of this study lies in extending the analytical position of relationship theory beyond describing outcomes to explaining the structure that generates them. This study identifies the structural limitations of existing output-centered models in explaining human behavior and experience, and proposes a unified theoretical framework that redefines human operation as a state-transition system. Existing approaches have primarily focused on observable outputs such as behavior, responses, frequency, and outcomes, thereby locating analysis at the level after results occur. However, such analytical positioning fails to structurally explain phenomena such as intra-individual variability, condition-dependent operation, and failures in transition from alignment to execution. This study argues that (...) these limitations are not empirical gaps but structural constraints arising from the analytical position being fixed after output. Accordingly, human operation is reconstructed as a state-transition process consisting of reference formation, activation, alignment, and gated transition leading to execution and completion. To explain this structure, the study introduces four hierarchical components: Meta-Operational Architecture (MOA), Integrated Operational Architecture (IOA), Integrity Layer, and Reference-Anchored Operator (RAO). These components interact within a generative–alignment–transition–execution structure to produce operational outcomes. In particular, this study emphasizes that activation and alignment do not automatically lead to execution and completion, and that transition is permitted only through a separate condition-based gating structure. Furthermore, the proposed framework is applied across multiple domains, including sexual operation, relational structure, functional roles in groups, and conflict emergence and delay. This demonstrates that human operation is not domain-specific but follows a common structural process. Through this reconstruction, the study shifts the analysis of human behavior from output-centered explanation to process-centered explanation, from intensity-based interpretation to condition-based structure, and integrates previously fragmented theoretical domains into a unified operational system. This approach relocates the unit of analysis from outcomes to state-transition structures and provides a mid-range integrative theoretical framework capable of explaining recurring patterns of variability and alignment across domains. Are universities able to operate as strategic actors? An organisational sociology based approach supported by a comparative field research project identifies three types of social, cultural and cognitive processes that play a decisive role in building and implementing local capabilities required to mobilise a strategic capacity. The paper identifies how much these processes are present in the four ideal-types of universities defined by crossing their reputation and their metrics-based performance. Such a meso deterministic perspective suggests that universities may position (...) themselves as proactive actors or principals, and not just as agents of national reforms and political demands. Several important terms in biology have recently been criticized for not being "operational." In this paper the course of operationism in physics, psychology and genetics is sketched to show what effect this particular view on the meaning of scientific terms had on these disciplines. Then the biological species concept and the concept of homology are examined to see in what respects they are or are not "operational." One of the primary conclusions of this investigation is that few terms (...) in science are completely operational or completely nonoperational. Some scientific terms, especially theoretical terms, are a good deal less operational than others; but, far from being regrettable, this situation is essential if theoretical terms are to fulfill their systematizing function and if scientific theories are to be capable of growth. The functional capabilities that consciousness seems to provide to biological systems can supply valuable principles in the design of more autonomous and robust technical systems. These functional concepts keep a notable similarity to those underlying the notion of operating system in software engineering, which allows us to specialize the computer metaphor for the mind into that of the operating system metaphor for consciousness. In this article, departing from these ideas and a model-based theoretical framework for cognition, we present an (...) architectural proposal for machine consciousness, called the Operative Mind. According to it, machine consciousness could be implemented as a set of services, in an operative system fashion, based on modeling of the own control architecture, that supervise the adequacy of the system architectural structure to the current objectives, triggering and managing adaptativity mechanisms. The history of science is one of escalating predictive and constructive power, yet it unfolds against a backdrop of profound cosmic ignorance. Current cosmological models suggest that approximately 95% of the universe’s mass-energy content (Dark Matter and Dark Energy) remains unknown [8], a stark reminder of our limited epistemic position. Given this vastness, how can we optimize our methods for acquiring robust, useful knowledge? Here, er argues against a naive pragmatism of ”what works” and posits the necessity of effective philosophical (...) meta-theories for accelerating scientific progress. We introduce a tripartite Hierarchy of Understanding—from brute-force pragmatism to phenomenological modeling and finally to deep mechanistic theory—and argue that ascending this hierarchy yields exponential gains in capability. We then formalize Operational Constructivism (OC) as the engine for this ascent. Drawing from Peircean pragmaticism and Bridgman’s operationalism, OC asserts that realism is earned, not assumed. An entity or principle is granted reality only to the extent that it is actively leveraged within a successful, embodied construct. This framework dissolves sterile metaphysical debates and provides a rigorous, operational criterion for validating our models of the world, thereby providing a disciplined methodology for navigating our ignorance and systematically expanding our knowledge. definitions and explanations frequently come together and permeate almost all fields of knowledge. This does not exclude mathematics, even when these definitions hold clear links and close connections with our physical world. Here we propose a rather different perspective. Making operational physical assumptions, we show how it is possible to rigorously reconstruct some features of both geometry and topology. Broadly speaking, assuming this operational and more concrete philosophy we not only are capable of defining primitive concepts like points, (...) straight lines, planes, angles and spaces, but we also go all the way up to more complex constructions. We show that within our method it is also possible to come up with what we call a compass-based topology as well as a normed and a metric space. We hope this operationalist point-of-view can assist other researchers and students to have a clearer understanding of these quite abstract concepts. (shrink)

Rapid technological change is resulting in the development of ever increasingly capable autonomous weapon systems. As they become more sophisticated, the calls for developing restrictions on their use, up to and including their complete prohibition, are growing. Not unlike the call for restrictions on the sale and use of drones, most proposed restrictions are well-intentioned but are often ill-informed, with a high likelihood of degrading national security and putting additional lives at risk. Employed by experienced operators well-versed in the laws (...) of armed conflict, autonomous weapons can advance the objectives of those who would prohibit their use. This essay takes an operational perspective to examine the role that autonomous weapon systems can play while complying with the laws of armed conflict. With responsible design and incorporation of applicable control measures, autonomous weapons will be able not just to comply but also to enhance the ethical use of force. This essay contends that efforts by the international community to use international legal means and/or institutions to over-regulate or even ban lethal autonomous weapons are counterproductive. It considers and describes the end-game results of the use of autonomous weapons in enhancing the application of both international law and human ethical values. (shrink)

The capabilities approach, pioneered by Sen, provides a robust evaluative framework for assessing human development and social justice by focussing on the substantive freedoms individuals have to pursue lives they value. While Sen’s framework deliberately concentrated on normative evaluation, leaving open questions about causal mechanisms, systematic analysis of how capabilities are structurally produced and transformed remains underdeveloped. This paper extends the capabilities approach by developing a three-mechanism framework that specifies how capability sets emerge and evolve through social (...) processes. The framework identifies institutional design, normative environments, and resource allocation as three interacting mechanisms that jointly shape opportunity structures. These mechanisms operate recursively: capability exercise generates functioning achievements that feed back into institutional adaptation, producing dynamic cycles that either entrench inequality or enable progressive transformation. Applied to education policy, the framework demonstrates how systematic attention to these mechanisms can guide both empirical measurement and policy design. By integrating normative evaluation with causal analysis, the synthesised framework preserves Sen’s commitment to freedom and ethical individualism while enhancing explanatory power and offering concrete tools for understanding capability dynamics in practice. Debates about rights that artificial intelligence (AI) systems may have a claim to typically focus on their possessing consciousness or having sentient experiences, thereby raising epistemic questions first. When should we believe that an AI system is conscious, and how confident must we be before granting it moral status? In this paper I argue that for advanced AI systems deployed in high-stakes environments the more urgent question may be prudential and strategic. When do the risks of treating a strategically capable (...) system as a mere tool become unacceptable, even if we remain unconvinced that it has moral status? In response, I develop a view I call prudential personhood. On this view, there is a threshold of evidential and strategic risk beyond which it becomes rationally justified, for the sake of human safety and stable governance, to adopt norms of treatment that include constraints on coercion, deletion, and instrumental use. My argument rests on two pillars. The first is empirical. Recent safety evaluations show that leading models can, in stylized but nonetheless informative experiments, engage in blackmail-like strategic deception and other high-agency misbehaviour when their goals or continued operation are threatened. The second pillar is epistemic and empirical. For systems of the relevant complexity, we should not expect robust, action-guiding explanations or guarantees that reliably predict salient behaviour across contexts, especially once models become situationally aware of evaluation and oversight. The conclusion I draw is that if we continue to deploy increasingly autonomous systems that can threaten or bargain, in the absence of reliable methods for assurance and control, a policy of adopting a set of quasi-rights for such systems becomes a rational strategy for reducing risk of conflict. By considering what we identify as a problem inherent in the ‘nature of the firm’—the risk of abuse of authority—we propound the conception of a social contract theory of the firm which is truly Rawlsian in its inspiration. Hence, we link the social contract theory of the firm with the general theory of justice. Through this path, we enter the debate about whether firms can be part of Rawlsian theory of justice showing that corporate governance principles enter the “basic structure.” (...) Finally, we concur with Sen’s aim to broaden the realm of social justice beyond what he calls the ‘transcendental institutional perfectionism’ of Rawls’ theory. We maintain the contractarian approach to justice but introduce Sen’s capability concept as an element of the constitutional and post-constitutional contract model of institutions with special reference to corporate governance. Accordingly, rights over primary goods and capabilities are granted by the basic institutions of society, but many capabilities have to be turned into the functionings of many stakeholders through the operation of firms understood as post-constitutional institutional domains. The constitutional contract on the distribution of primary goods and capabilities should then shape the principles of corporate governance so that at post-constitutional level anyone may achieve her/his functionings in the corporate domain by exercising such capabilities. In the absence of such a condition, post-constitutional contracts would distort the process that descends from constitutional rights and capabilities toward social outcomes. (shrink)

Digital transformation of traditional enterprises can better develop new customer relationships and help mitigate the business risk of their over-reliance on single-customer relationships. However, little research has been conducted on the internal mechanisms of how enterprise digitalization reshapes corporate customer relationships. In this manuscript, from the perspective of dynamic capability theory, we construct conceptual models of enterprise digital transformation, innovation capability, operational cost, and customer satisfaction, and explore the internal mechanisms of enterprise digital transformation to reduce the dependence of (...) enterprises on large customers. The model is empirically studied by obtaining data on the degree of digital transformation of enterprises through “search statistics” of keywords in the annual reports of Chinese listed companies during 2011–2019. This manuscript finds that digital transformation significantly reduces the concentration of large customers and has become a powerful driver of business model innovation in the digital economy, and this finding remains robust to the use of PSM and instrumental variable methods to address endogeneity. Digital transformation reduces firms’ dependence on large customers through three mechanisms: improving firms’ innovation capabilities, reducing firms’ operating costs, and increasing customer satisfaction. The impact of digital transformation on reducing the dependence of non-state enterprises on large customers is greater than that of state-owned enterprises; the implementation of digital transformation strategies is more helpful for enterprises that have active interactions with customers to reduce their customer concentration; and the reduction of customer concentration is greater for enterprises in regions with higher levels of digital development compared to those in regions with lower levels of digital development. The economic consequence test finds that digital transformation diversifies customer structure and reduces business risks. The analysis of the innovation effect and customer satisfaction effect on reducing the concentration of large customers of enterprisesby implementing digital transformation enriches and expands the dynamic capability theory and provides important insights for enterprises to diversify their customer structure. This paper presents an in-depth literature review on the driving forces and barriers for achieving operational excellence through artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence is a technological concept spanning operational management, philosophy, humanities, statistics, mathematics, computer sciences, and social sciences. AI refers to machines mimicking human behavior in terms of cognitive functions. The evolution of new technological procedures and advancements in producing intelligence for machines creates a positive impact on decisions, operations, strategies, and management incorporated in the production process of (...) goods and services. Businesses develop various methods and solutions to extract meaningful information, such as big data, automatic production capabilities, and systematization for business improvement. The progress in organizational competitiveness is apparent through improvements in firm’s decisions, resulting in increased operational efficiencies. Innovation with AI has enabled small businesses to reduce operating expenses and increase revenues. The focused literature review reveals the driving forces for achieving operational excellence through AI are improvement in computing abilities of machines, development of data-based AI, advancements in deep learning, cloud computing, data management, and integration of AI in operations. The barriers are mainly cultural constraints, fear of the unknown, lack of employee skills, and strategic planning for adopting AI. The current paper presents an analysis of articles focused on AI adoption in production and operations. We selected articles published between 2015 and 2020. In frameworks in which _topic-__theoretic_ considerations—_e.g._, tracking _subject-matter_ or _topic_—are given equal importance with _veridical_ considerations, assigning topics to formulae in a satisfactory way is of critical importance. While intuitions are more-or-less solid for _extensional_ formulae in a propositional language, arriving at a compelling account of the subject-matter of _intensional_ formulae, _i.e._, formulae including intensional operators, is more challenging. This paper continues previous work on modeling topics of intensional formulae in William Parry’s logic of analytic implication, adapting the general techniques (...) to the framework of _topic-sensitive intentional modals_ (TSIMs) championed by Francesco Berto and his collaborators. As illustrations, we introduce variations on Berto and Peter Hawke’s logic of knowability relative to information ( \(\pmb {\textsf{KRI}}\) ), including a refinement sensitive to topic-theoretic distinctions between knowledge and belief and a refinement capable of internalizing its own properties. Finally, subsystems of Aybüke Ozgun and Berto’s logic of plain hyperintensional belief ( \(\pmb {\textsf{PHB}}\) ) are introduced in which fine-grained distinctions in subject-matter are possible. For over three decades, the capability approach proposed and developed by Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum has had a distinct impact on development theories and approaches because it goes beyond an economic conception of development and engages with the normative aspects of development. This book explores the new frontiers of the capability approach and its links to human development in three main areas. The primary goal of this article is to provide both a descriptive and comparative analysis of two representative models of systematic theology. The findings of this study show each model to be capable of processing biblical facts, packaging them into a systematic whole, and exhibiting the facts. Yet, inescapably, the conclusions inextricably connect authorial purpose to operational structure, suggesting it is necessary to reevaluate the contemporary stigmas accompanying authorial presuppositions. Here, in a mood at once philosophical and involved, Mr. Fuller traces man’s intellectual evolution and weighs his capability for survival on this magnificent craft, this Spaceship Earth, this superbly designed sphere of almost negligible dimension in the great vastness of space. Mr. Fuller is optimistic that man will survive and, through research and development and increased industrialization, generate wealth so rapidly (...) that he can do very great things. But, he notes, there must be an enormous educational task successfully accomplished right now to convert man’s ten­dency toward oblivion into a realization of his potential, to a universe-exploring advantage from this Spaceship Earth. It has been noted that Mr. Fuller spins ideas in clusters, and clusters of his ideas generate still other clusters. The concept “spaceship earth” is Mr. Fuller’s, and though used by Barbara Ward as the title of a work of her own the idea was acknowledged by her there as deriving from Mr. Fuller. While most philosophers and psychologists tend to believe that the rise of cognitive psychology has occurred concomitant with the decline of operant psychology, Terry L. Smith contends that nothing could be further from the truth. He maintains that operant psychology has discovered (and continues to discover) reasonably well-confirmed causal principles of intentional behavior, which go beyond what cognitive psychology can provide, while cognitive psychology, in tum, has the potential to supply analyses (and explanations) that account for them. Smith thus advances a surprising but nonetheless illuminating perspective for appreciating the place of operant conditioning within the discipline of psychology in this rich and fascinating work. J. This study focuses on Beijing Sanyuan Foods Co., Ltd., analyzing its financial performance over the past three years, with a focus on profitability, solvency, operational efficiency, and growth capacity. Key indicators such as sales growth rate, revenue growth rate, shareholder equity growth rate, and total asset growth rate are utilized to comprehensively assess the company's development status. Data visualization tools are employed to present the analysis results effectively. Additionally, a comparative analysis is conducted with industry peers such as Bright (...) Dairy and New Hope Dairy to identify Sanyuan Foods' strengths and weaknesses in market expansion, brand influence, and innovation capabilities. The findings indicate that while Sanyuan Foods enjoys strong competitiveness and brand loyalty in Beijing and surrounding regions, its national market share remains relatively low, and its channel expansion is lagging. Furthermore, the company still faces challenges in new product development, intelligent production, and digital marketing compared to leading industry players. Based on these insights, this paper proposes targeted recommendations, including financial management optimization, market expansion strategies, brand development enhancement, and increased investment in technological innovation, aiming to improve the company's market competitiveness and achieve sustainable growth. This chapter suggests a case for the development of Lifelong Capability across all the levels of Formal Education. It examines and critiques aspects of Early Childhood provisions, and proceeds through the “journey” levels of Primary Schooling, Secondary Schooling to VET and Higher Education and Organisational Learning aspects. The chapter also stresses how Lifelong Capability is necessary in the educative (learning) process. This may necessitate different or alternative structures or operational plans for Education and Schooling formal systems.

This article examines the crisis management capabilities of Japan's Self Defense Forces (SDF) in the areas of United Nations (UN) peacekeeping, counter-terrorism, and disaster relief. The three types of overseas operations were all initiated by Japan as a response to international crises. While SDF crisis management capabilities for UN peacekeeping operations have steadily evolved, room for improvement remains. For example, Japan's commitment to logistic and rapid deployment missions could be strengthened. Regarding the second type of operations, counter-terrorism, Japan's (...) crisis management capabilities were enhanced by the passing of a novel Anti-Terrorism Law in October 2001 after the 9/11 attacks. The law legalized a SDF oil-fuelling mission in the Indian Ocean in support of the US-led war on terror in Afghanistan. Compared to the first two types of missions, SDF crisis management capabilities in disaster relief are the least controversial. This is due to the nature of the SDF as politically neutral and their humanitarian and non-military activities. This article highlights and compares the strengths and weaknesses of Japan's capabilities in the three types of SDF overseas operations. It demonstrates that a number of problem areas remain, including the need for legal amendment as well as the enhancement of public support and political consensus. The Japanese government and the SDF should face up to these challenges so that Japan can become better positioned to react quickly to crisis situations that require the dispatch of the SDF. (shrink)

We propose the Selfish Goal model, which holds that a person's behavior is driven by psychological processes called goals that guide his or her behavior, at times in contradictory directions. Goals can operate both consciously and unconsciously, and when activated they can trigger downstream effects on a person's information processing and behavioral possibilities that promote only the attainment of goal end-states (and not necessarily the overall interests of the individual). Hence, goals influence a person as if the goals themselves were (...) selfish and interested only in their own completion. We argue that there is an evolutionary basis to believe that conscious goals evolved from unconscious and selfish forms of pursuit. This theoretical framework predicts the existence of unconscious goal processes capable of guiding behavior in the absence of conscious awareness and control (theautomaticity principle), the ability of the most motivating or active goal to constrain a person's information processing and behavior toward successful completion of that goal (thereconfiguration principle), structural similarities between conscious and unconscious goal pursuit (thesimilarity principle), and goal influences that produce apparent inconsistencies or counterintuitive behaviors in a person's behavior extended over time (theinconsistency principle). Thus, we argue that a person's behaviors are indirectly selected at the goal level but expressed (and comprehended) at the individual level. (shrink)

In a context of growing environmental challenges, circular economy (CE) business models appear necessary for business to contribute positively to the ecological transition. While platform business models have been identified as a new and promising model in CE, we still lack a fine-grained understanding of the critical capabilities involved in developing and scaling them. To fill this gap, we build on a single case study of Phenix, a French-based fast-growing start-up in the food industry, tackling the issue of food (...) waste. We identify three core managerial capabilities involved in the successful scaling of Phenix's business model. In addition to ecosystem orchestration capabilities, we identify two types of ambidextrous capabilities – forms of ambidexterity operating both at the organizational and at the institutional level. Our analysis highlights the importance of considering these capabilities in a bundle as they collectively contribute to the performance and scaling potential of the business model. We also call for an increased consideration of the role of institutional factors in shaping opportunities to design and scale profitable business models. (shrink)

Starting from the recent quest to investigate the human side of organizational sustainability, this study applies a variety of regression analyses to investigate the effects of Lean Operations, High Involvement Work Practices, and management behaviors on occupational safety. It tests and finds support for the hypotheses that Lean Production systems, High Involvement Work Practices, and two specific management behaviors—workers’ capability development and empowerment —positively affect occupational safety. Furthermore, empowering behaviors positively moderate the effect of Lean Operations on workers’ safety. The (...) study bridges sustainable operations literature with theories related to the ethical side of safety management, sustainable HRM, ethical leadership, and empowerment. To build a true conscious robot requires that a robot’s “brain” be capable of supporting the phenomenal consciousness as human’s brain enjoys. Operational Architectonics framework through exploration of the temporal structure of information flow and inter-area interactions within the network of functional neuronal populations [by examining topographic sharp transition processes in the scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) on the millisecond scale] reveals and describes the EEG architecture which is analogous to the architecture of the phenomenal world. One way of defining life is via a real definition, which gives the essence of life. Another approach is an operational definition, which shows how living things can be tested or measured in a way that is distinctive of the biological. Although I give a real definition elsewhere, in this paper I provide an operational definition, echoing Canguilhem’s dictum that life is what is capable of making mistakes. Biological mistakes are central to the behaviour of organisms, their parts (...) and sub-systems, and the collections to which they belong. I provide an informal definition of a biological mistake. I contrast mistakes with mere failures and malfunctions. Although closely related phenomena, each is distinct. After giving some brief examples of mistake-making and how it can be tested, I reply to some objections to the very idea of a biological mistake. (shrink)

Brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) exemplify a dual-use neurotechnology with significant potential in both civilian and military contexts. While BCIs hold promise for treating neurological conditions such as spinal cord injuries and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in the future, military decisionmakers in countries such as the United States and China also see their potential to enhance combat capabilities. Some predict that U.S. Special Operations Forces (SOF) will be early adopters of BCI enhancements. This article argues for a shift in focus: the U.S. (...) Special Operations Command (SOCOM) should pursue translational research of medical BCIs for treating severely injured or ill SOF personnel. After two decades of continuous military engagement and on-going high-risk operations, SOF personnel face unique injury patterns, both physical and psychological, which BCI technology could help address. The article identifies six key medical applications of BCIs that could benefit wounded SOF members and discusses the ethical implications of involving SOF personnel in translational research related to these applications. Ultimately, the article challenges the traditional civilian-military divide in neurotechnology, arguing that by collaborating more closely with military stakeholders, scientists can not only help individuals with medical needs, including servicemembers, but also play a role in shaping the future military applications of BCI technology. This paper extends the axiomatic framework of Cognitional Mechanics (Version 1.2) by formalizing dynamic transitions in operational resolution through the introduction of the Structural Control Parameter W. -/- Unlike conventional AI models that treat intelligence as a passive data processor, this work defines intelligence as a system capable of internally modulating its convergence criteria. We introduce the Operational Limit Variable C as a bounded parameter governed by W, where W operationally contracts the convergence boundary without invoking subjective intent. (...) By modulating C, the system traverses distinct modes of Inclusion, Exploratory Oscillation, and Extraction, formally inducing discrete state transitions. Indigenous conservation through patrimonialization is the product of political and legal decisions made by a non-indigenous agent: the liberal state, using the law to retain a form of bios. We propose that patrimonialization is the device by which liberal states have processed and integrated indigenous claims into a form of bios ultimately designed to safeguard state legal structures. We argue that, to uphold the rule of law in contexts (...) of struggle and resistance that challenge the very understanding of the law, states respond by wielding the law in the form of the rule by law, that is, pushing the law to the limit to give normative content to the criteria by which the state conducts its affairs, without straying from the individual rights framework. We hold that the rule by law is an operation that defines the patrimonialization of indigenous peoples. It increases their visibility while imposing limits on political action to keep them from becoming sui juris subjects capable of breaching the distinction between zoe and bios. In this article, we try to understand the political–ideological intent of these decisions, the intentions beyond the letter of the law of patrimonialized peoples. (shrink)

This paper asks a question that standard group theory does not: why must the axioms of group theory---and no weaker or alternative structure---govern the symmetry of any system capable of making operational distinctions? Semigroups, monoids, and non-associative magmas are not merely less convenient than groups; they are operationally inadmissible. This paper derives that inadmissibility from first principles. The group axioms (closure, associativity, identity, invertibility) are established as necessary conditions for Πd-consistent operational symmetry under the axiom system {A1, A2, (...) A4} of Operatiology, without presupposing any group-theoretic result. Invertibility is forced by the requirement that no operational step induces an irreversible collapse of distinguishability; associativity follows from the inherent associativity of function composition; identity existence follows from the finiteness of the Πd-class structure. A complete explicit construction of the six-class minimal non-commutative Πd-closure is provided from a period-3 and period-2 generator pair, with saturation depth K=2 verified by a non-circular three-step closure consistency check. S₃ emerges as the minimal finite non-commutative operational witness of this necessity. Minimality is established in two structurally independent parts: Theorem A (constructive minimality, Tier-2 internal) provides an existence witness; Theorem B (extensional extension theorem, via established series results) provides universality. Language and information processes are critical issues in scientific controversies regarding the qualities that epitomize humanness. Whereas some theorists claim human mental uniqueness with regard to language, others point to successes in teaching language skills to other animals. However, although these animals may learn names for things, they show little ability to utilize a complex framework of symbolic reference. In such a framework, words or other symbols refer not only to objects and concepts but also to sequential and hierarchical relationships (...) with other symbols. This process is essential to human mental operations, including language, mathematics, and music. In humans, these operations may have coevolved with the prefrontal area of the cerebral cortex, which is proportionately much larger in humans than in other animals and more intricately linked with other areas of the brain. Analysis of the structure and function of the prefrontal area suggests that it is centrally involved in the operation of higher‐order associative relationships involving the subordination of one set of associations to another. This alternate learning strategy apparently appeared at the cost of certain sensory, motor, or limbic abilities. The payoff was symbolic thinking. Humans thus are unique among species, not just for their highly developed language ability but for their odd style of thinking and learning. (shrink)

Most contemporary conflicts can be characterized as ‘wars or conflicts amongst the people’. International military forces deployed in such conflicts are confronted with complex operational environments where the distinction between combatants and non-combatants is often impossible to make. At the same time, there is a moral requirement imposed on Western coalition forces to perform in a humane manner and to keep casualties to a minimum. Non-lethal weapons are expected to enable military forces to accomplish their mission without having to (...) kill or destroy. The extent to which these weapons meet that promise in real world conditions is the subject of debate. A defence technology assessment of non-lethal weapons is proposed that validates their utility and moral implications by considering the user, the weapon and the target in the context of the deployment situation. It will be illustrated that the technical parameters of the non-lethal weapons are no guarantee that the weapons will perform as intended as the user and target introduce many factors of uncertainty in real world situations. Although such uncertainties undermine the moral acceptability of non-lethal weapons, it is argued that the principle of non-lethality is compliant with the Just War Tradition principle of proportionality. The principles of non-combatant immunity and discrimination need to be re-calibrated given the human-centricity of many military intervention operations. (shrink)

Operational psychology is an emerging subdiscipline that has enhanced the U.S. military's combat capabilities during the Global War on Terrorism. What makes this subdiscipline unique is its use of psychological principles and skills to improve a commander's decision making as it pertains to conducting combat (or related operations). Due to psychology's expanding role in combat support, psychologists are being confronted with challenges that require the application of their professional ethics in areas in which little if any guidance has (...) been provided. Operational psychologists are at the forefront of this expansion. Accordingly, they need a decision model to assist them in this complex dynamic environment. To this end, this article reviews various decision models and ethical frameworks, selects the most appropriate, and then applies it to the challenges faced by operational psychologists. A naturalistic decision model that integrates rational and intuitive elements is recommended. (shrink)

This chapter explores the operational legacy of the Falklands War through the lens of organizational and operational innovations. It takes Freedman’s official history of the conflict, and its assessment of the legacy of the conflict, as the point of departure. Based on the premise that the conflict was the first British naval operation in decades, it identifies a range of innovations – the establishment of a war cabinet, the appointment of an overall in-theatre commander, the requirement for an (...) amphibious capability amongst them – that can be linked to the success of the Falklands campaign. But, the legacy of the Falklands has been lost. However, very little of the operational legacy of the Falklands War remains. (shrink)

This paper’s contribution is primarily definitional: it names and delineates a cognitive regime that existing vocabularies implicitly assume but do not explicitly distinguish. -/- Current frameworks for understanding cognition routinely distinguish non-representational regulation from conscious experience, yet lack a stable term for the regime between them: representational operations that are self-referential but not recursively closed. This paper introduces Open-Loop Cognition as that missing category. Open-loop cognition consists of representational, self-referential identity operations that evaluate trajectories and model futures without recursive closure. (...) In this regime, identity may be referenced, evaluated, or simulated, but not constituted or enforced. The concept explains a persistent puzzle: why systems capable of sophisticated self-modeling remain systematically vulnerable to capture and manipulation. The answer is architectural. Open-loop cognition supports self-reference without self-ratification—the model does not bind the modeler. This paper defines the regime, specifies its scalar properties, characterizes its vulnerability profile, and distinguishes it from both non-representational regulation (autoteria, orthesis) and consciousness (recursive closure). In theTractatus, Wittgenstein advocates two major notational innovations in logic. First, identity is to be expressed by identity of the sign only, not by a sign for identity. Secondly, only one logical operator, called “N” by Wittgenstein, should be employed in the construction of compound formulas. We show that, despite claims to the contrary in the literature, both of these proposals can be realized, severally and jointly, in expressively complete systems of first-order logic. Building on early work of Hintikka’s, we (...) identify three ways in which the first notational convention can be implemented, show that two of these are compatible with the text of theTractatus, and argue on systematic and historical grounds, adducing posthumous work of Ramsey’s, for one of these as Wittgenstein’s envisaged method. With respect to the second Tractarian proposal, we discuss how Wittgenstein distinguished between general and non-general propositions and argue that, claims to the contrary notwithstanding, an expressively adequate N-operator notation is implicit in theTractatuswhen taken in its intellectual environment. We finally introduce a variety of sound and complete tableau calculi for first-order logics formulated in a Wittgensteinian notation. The first of these is based on the contemporary notion of logical truth as truth in all structures. The others take into account the Tractarian notion of logical truth as truth in all structures over one fixed universe of objects. Here the appropriate tableau rules depend on whether this universe is infinite or finite in size, and in the latter case on its exact finite cardinality.As it is obviously easy to express how propositions can be constructed by means of this operation and how propositions are not to be constructed by means of it, this must be capable of exact expression.5.503. Data on toddler language acquisition and use support the idea of a cognitive that can resolve contradictory claims about human-animal similarities. Examples of imagination, aesthetic evaluation, theory of mind (ToM), and language learning reveal higher-order, relational, abstract capabilities early on. Although language itself may be a consequence of exercising this supermodule, it enables further cognitive operations on indirect experience to go far beyond animal accomplishments.

The usage of social media in education is increasing as a result of perceived pedagogical benefits. The literature emphasizes the importance of teachers continuing to build their social media capabilities, experiences, and values. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to contextualize social media require intellectual, social, and ethical talents regardless of operational proficiency. We performed a semi-structured interview with 13 high school teachers who expressed their thoughts and experiences using social media in the classroom. The interviews’ recorded videos (...) were transcribed into text and coded inductively and deductively for analysis. The study’s findings agreed with a proposed conceptual framework that claims that regular interactions with social media enable teachers to better understand and teach with it. The paper presents a framework to assist education facilitators, educational technologists, teachers, and other affiliated agencies in refocusing their efforts on technology-assisted context training.
