Il comprend ce mot de telle sorte qu’il est conduit à dénoncer une inconséquence, voire une contradiction, dans la démarche de son concitoyen. Toute la thèse du second Discours s’écroule! Piqué au vif, Rousseau profite de cette circonstance pour préciser le sens de ce mot et pour mettre en relief le rôle du temps dans la vie des hommes, de toutes choses en réalité. Mais une nouvelle difficulté surgit, le rapport d’opposition entre l’histoire et la nature devient problématique. C’est de ce noeud dans la pensée rousseauiste que nous avons voulu traiter, ou du moins approcher : le lien entre l’être et le temps. Nous avons pris la Lettre à M. The Oxford University Studies in the Enlightenment series, previously known as SVEC (Studies on Voltaire and the Eighteenth Century), has published over 500 peer-reviewed scholarly volumes since 1955 as part of the Voltaire Foundation at the University of Oxford. International in focus, Oxford University Studies in the Enlightenment volumes cover wide-ranging aspects of the eighteenth century and the Enlightenment, from gender studies to political theory, and from economics to visual arts and music, and are published in English or French.

This article reviews and corrects frequent misunderstandings of somaesthetics, the multidisciplinary field of study of the lived body conceived by Richard Shusterman. After responding to an article published in Contemporary Pragmatism, I extend the discussion to cover larger topics of discussion related to somaesthetics and misapprehensions by its critics, including the nature of somatic experience, the role of pleasure, and the relevance of culture. In rectifying mistakes of understanding, it is hoped the effort will foster better understanding and better critique.

In the course of the eighteenth century, understanding human cognitive life came to be construed as something to be explored in terms of the physiology of the sensory organs, the nerves, and the brain: a form of naturalization that effectively moved cognition out of the realm of philosophy as it had traditionally been understood. Bonnet's Analytical Essay on the Faculties of the Soul was at the forefront of these developments, and this is its first English translation. Drawing on his (...) earlier work in natural history -- he was the leading entomologist of his era -- he approaches problems of the nature of the mind via the physiology and anatomy of the brain and sensory systems. His approach is one of 'reverse engineering', starting from an organic statue without faculties, and investigating how it would need to be modified to produce a human being. Bonnet takes up a position that cuts across the standard understanding of the period as a clash between materialism and dualism. While his approach was rigorously naturalistic and physiological, this did not lead him to reject the notion of a soul. Instead, he argues that, in order to make sense of their sensory abilities, we need to attribute a soul to animals as well as human beings. At the same time, he argues that if personal immortality is to be possible, it can be conceived along the lines of insect metamorphosis, which shows how different biological forms can harbour a single identity.--dust jacket. French scholars have recently been particularly active in making the texts and ideas of logical empiricism accessible to French readers. But they have also increasingly contributed to the historical research on the development of logical empiricism and to the study of the different positions. I have already considered some of these French contributions to the understanding of the philosophy of the Vienna Circle. Jacques Bouveresse, Christian Bonnet and Pierre Wagner have been particularly important in the recent interest on (...) the part of French philosophers in logical empiricism, a philosophic movement which seemed not to fi t so well in the context of French thought. Pierre Wagner has now published two volumes collecting new papers by French and Anglo-American scholars on logical empiricism. The first volume presents different facets of a central problem in the philosophy of mathematics of logical empiricism: how can mathematics as a formal system without content be applied to experience in the different natural sciences? Previous works usually report greater postural stability in precise visual tasks than in stationary-gaze tasks. However, existing cognitive models do not fully support these results as they assume that performing an attention-demanding task while standing would alter postural stability because of the competition of attention between the tasks. Contrary to these cognitive models, attentional resources may increase to create a synergy between visual and postural brain processes to perform precise oculomotor behaviors. To test this hypothesis, we investigated a difficult searching (...) task and a control free-viewing task. The precise visual task required the 16 young participants to find a target in densely furnished images. The free-viewing task consisted of looking at similar images without searching anything. As expected, the participants exhibited significantly lower body displacements and a significantly higher cognitive workload in the precise visual task than in the free-viewing task. Most important, our exploration showed functional synergies between visual and postural processes in the searching task, that is, significant negative relationships showing lower head and neck displacements to reach more expended zones of fixation. These functional synergies seemed to involve a greater attentional demand because they were not significant anymore when the cognitive workload was controlled. In the free-viewing task, only significant positive relationships were found and they did not involve any change in cognitive workload. An alternative cognitive model and its potential subtended neuroscientific circuit are proposed to explain the supposedly cognitively grounded functional nature of vision–posture synergies in precise visual tasks. The Vienna Circle was a group of scientists and philosophers who met around Moritz Schlick in Vienna between the two world wars. What they had in common was a rejection of systems-based thinking and metaphysical questions deemed to be eternal, a focus on the most recent developments in science and a desire to clarify problems through logical analysis. The Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus was at the heart of their discussions, but Wittgenstein himself was only in contact with them indirectly, through Schlick whom (...) he fascinated. The end of the Vienna Circle and Schlick’s fate are linked closely and, indeed, tragically, because of Schlick’s assassination in June 1936 at the University of Vienna. (shrink)

While I emphatically share Pihlström’s alarm about the “lunacy” of contemporary politics and the grave threat of fascistic, conservative, and authoritative movements presently wrecking democracy around the globe, I do not, however, accept Pihlström’s argument about the pragmatic method precisely as a method for reconciliation. I contend that pragmatism should not be consolidated to a method, for mediation and reconciliation are not pragmatically useful today. Moreover, I submit that instead of mediation and reconciliation, pragmatism should concern itself with experience and (...) transformation. I ultimately suggest we not depend on reifying methods that promise reconciliation; instead, embrace experience by attacking conflicts individually and look to transformation as a goal. (shrink)

As the official UK COVID Inquiry is investigating the response by the government to the 2020 global pandemic, revealing the difficulties that the Johnson administration had to face and the overall lack of adequate preparedness at the top of the UK executive, people are becoming growingly aware of the many challenges that such situations pose in terms of crisis management and public governance. Beyond the somewhat sterile blame game played by leading political actors, this formal accountability forum has also revealed (...) competing narratives about the crisis that might have hampered any coherent political solution. This article proposes to focus on the ‘official’ narratives by the UK government and to analyse critically the way Boris Johnson narrativised his political response to the pandemic in order to examine how his unconventional style of leadership was deployed during a global crisis. Using a typology of crisis management inspired by crisis expert and leadership scholar Arjen Boin, the objective is to examine how ‘crisis narratives’ framed the way the UK government responded to the crisis. Die Spuren, die Ernst Mach, aber auch der weniger bekannte deutsche Physiologe und Hirnforscher Ewald (...) Hering in der französischen Wissenschaftsphilosophie hinterliessen, verfolgen die Autoren bis hin zu den Ideen Jean Piagets. Im Mittelpunkt des Buchs stehen Philosophen aus Frankreich, Deutschland und Österreich und ihre Leistung, die Wissenschaften nicht nur erkenntnistheoretisch und logisch durchleuchtet, sondern auch erkannt zu haben, dass ihre theoretische Struktur nur dann vollständig erfasst werden kann, wenn ihre praktische Dimension mit einbezogen wird. Dafür steht Henri Poincaré, der die tragende Rolle der Konventionen für die Theoriebildung in der Mathematik herausstellte. Sichtbar wird der Bezug zur Praxis auch in Moritz Schlicks Überlegungen zu einer auf Empirie basierenden Ethik oder in der Arbeit Otto Neuraths, der eine aus den modernen Wissenschaften gewonnene Konzeption menschlichen Erkennens für das Projekt der gesellschaftlichen Aufklärung fruchtbar machen wollte. SEXUALITY IN THE ANALYTICAL CURE TALK LOVE TO ME Given the freedom of tone that is the rule, we might well imagine that the analytical session moves on to talk about sexuality. In fact, it is not so much sexuality that is addressed as sex, and sex in the sense of identity, to describe what assigns the subject within a gender or in the other. The article shows that sex, indeed, is not just a partial object, of the phallic type, (...) or a genital organ, but also an object of the ideal type embodying the potentialities specific to each of the two sexes. This explains why, in analysis, the ideal sexuality, based on that idealisation of sex, prevails outright over the two other forms. In “transfer love”, the analyst or the analysis firstly embody the ideals in question and it becomes problematic if the analysand does not manage to detach them from their person or from the situation, so as to invest them in full knowledge – a necessary evolution too in married life. Preview: /Review: Satoshi Higuchi, Somaesthetics and the Philosophy of Culture: Projects in Japan (New York, NY; Oxford, England: Routledge, 2021), 138 pages./ Satoshi Higuchi’s Somaesthetics and the Philosophy of Culture is a succinct and innovative work in aesthetics and philosophy of education, despite what the title may otherwise imply. Indeed, the title may be the only shortcoming in this work, for it does not convey the scope of the concepts covered. It may be better titled Somaesthetics and the Philosophy of (...) Education, but even this does not express the important and fascinating discussions on the aesthetics of sports contained herein; and “education” is perhaps too narrow to encompass the range of application of the ideas (especially in the final part of the book). However, when the reader looks past the title, they will find a nicely organized work introducing readers to the topic of the aesthetics of sport, its application for improving pedagogy, and several avenues for further development in these areas. Higuchi’s previous work is a tireless series of granting legitimacy to the study of sports. Somaesthetics and the Philosophy of Culture is another important step in this project. Readers need not be familiar with Richard Shusterman’s multidisciplinary project of somaesthetics for, when it is necessary, Higuchi provides the relevant details. Readers who are familiar with somaesthetics will very quickly see how the ideas here complement it well. (shrink)

A Boolean algebra B that has a well-founded sublattice L which generates B is called a well-generated Boolean algebra. If in addition, L is generated by a complete set of representatives for B, then B is said to be canonically well-generated.Every WG Boolean algebra is superatomic. We construct two basic examples of superatomic non well-generated Boolean algebras. Their cardinal sequences are 1,0,1,1 and 0,0,20,1.Assuming MA, we show that every algebra with one of the cardinal sequences, α<1, λ<20, or 0,20,1,1 is (...) CWG.Assuming CH, or alternatively assuming MA, we determine which cardinal sequences admit only WG Boolean algebras.We find a necessary and sufficient condition for the canonical well-generatedness of algebras whose cardinal sequence has the form, α<1. We conclude that if such an algebra is CWG, then all of its quotients are CWG. We show that the above is not true for general Boolean algebras. We also conclude that if the cardinality of such an algebra is less than the cardinal defined below, then it is CWG. The cardinal is the least cardinality of an unbounded subset of {f f : ω → ω}.We investigate questions concerning embeddability, quotients and subalgebras of WG and CWG Boolean algebras, and construct various counter-examples. Este artículo presenta sintéticamente la manera en la que Adorno fundamenta su concepto de sociedad en una socialización mediada por el intercambio de mercancías (en el primer apartado) y propone (en el segundo apartado) tres aspectos de su argumentación que merecen discutirse y/o desarrollarse. Estos tres aspectos son: (1) el escaso desarrollo de su noción clave de “principio del intercambio”; (2) la influencia de la concepción del “capitalismo de Estado” en su pensamiento, que resulta incompatible con su concepción de una (...) sociedad socializada a través del intercambio; y (3) la ausencia de un desarrollo de la forma jurídica de ese intercambio, complementaria de su forma económica. La fuente principal del artículo son sus escritos, conferencias y seminarios sociológicos, filosófico-sociológicos o filosóficos escritos y dictados en las décadas de 1950-60. El concepto de sociedad de este último Adorno es, en nuestra opinión, el más elaborado con el que cuenta la teoría crítica de la sociedad para orientar sus investigaciones sobre la sociedad capitalista. Cet article s’emploie à comprendre comment la maladie d’Alzheimer vient convoquer l’histoire familiale, ses conflits et ses traces du négatif, perturbant à la fois les liens familiaux et l’inscription des proches dans leur rôle d’aidant. Les auteures rendent compte d’entretiens cliniques à visée de recherche menés auprès d’une fratrie de quatre sœurs confrontées à la dépendance de leur mère atteinte de (...) la maladie d’Alzheimer. À partir d’une analyse phénoménologique, elles montrent l’importance de la désorganisation des liens familiaux et la réactivation des conflits dans l’organisation concrète des aidants autour du parent malade. In the opinion of Jakob Friedrich Fries, Kant made damaging concessions to philosophical dogmatism, the contradictions of which he himself had pointed out with outstanding perceptiveness. So the distinction he made between transcendental knowledge (a form of knowledge of knowledge) and its object (the a priori knowledge it refers to) is not as rigorous as it should have been. Kant came to the conclusion that transcendental knowledge was itself a form of a priori knowledge, and tried to base synthetic a (...) priori judgements upon various forms of knowledge that were themselves a priori. Kant was thus the victim of a “prejudice in favour of proof”, to which he gave the specific form of a “prejudice in favour of the transcendental”. As “transcendental deduction” tries to provide “transcendental proof” of the validity of our knowledge, the Kantian theory of knowledge is threatened by a vicious circle. According to Fries, therefore, transcendental deduction should only be a subjective (psychological and anthropological) deduction which does not mean that he aims to reduce philosophy to psychology despite the contrary opinions of those who hold his psychologism in contempt.
