The paper focuses on industrial heritage and conservation concerns in the context of urban development. Through the comparison between three European industrial heritage sites will be introduced diverse transformation strategies. First, soft approach of IBA Emscher Park in Ruhr region, Germany, that focuses on the ecological sensitivity of the design approach. Second, temporary use strategies in creating post-industrial identity in the case of Sulzer-Areal Site in Winterthur, Switzerland. The last, adaptive reuse through a bottom-up urban policy in NDSM shipyard hall, (...) Amsterdam. Este artigo propõe uma reconstrução da análise comparativa oferecida por Heidegger nos Grundbegriffe (1929) sobre a diferença entre animais e humanos, com o objetivo geral de estabelecer afinidades entre Heidegger e algumas linhas contemporâneas na filosofia e nos estudos da cognição animal. Após abordar o argumento original de Heidegger, analisarei dois tipos de crítica que foram dirigidos a ele, para então responder a essas críticas com base na concepção heideggeriana do organismo biológico e no caráter semiótico que reside no cerne (...) de sua caracterização da conduta animal e do comportamento humano. Despite the fact that informal labour is a widespread phenomenon, the business ethics literature tends to describe it as a problem that needs to be overcome, rather than contemplating its merits. Informal labour is linked to poor working conditions, low-income and insufficient protection. However, it is also a survival strategy and upholds essential services, such as waste collection and recycling. Through the lens of postmodern ethics, we analyse 45 interviews with formal and informal waste management workers in Kinshasa. The study (...) explores the functioning and limits of recycling services in a metropolis, focusing on the experience of African workers and entrepreneurs. A complex picture of ethical challenges and individual business and survival strategies emerges from the analysis. Our findings demonstrate that labour decisions of voiceless people cannot be reduced to being rational or desperate choices, but that they reflect a careful elaboration of currently available options and strategies for the future. The study contributes to our understanding of entrepreneurship in a post-conflict context, the role of informal labour in the functioning of formal businesses in Africa and the contribution of postmodern theory to the study of businesses in non-Western societies. This volume takes a unique approach, dealing specifically with issues at the intersection of food and agricultural systems, environmental degradation, and climate change. It fills a gap in the literature on food and environmental justice in the context of global climate change offering a scholarly, yet accessible, analysis of the issues.

This article employs space and place as analytic categories in the history of life sciences and public health research in rural Argentina. The historical-ecological panorama of South America’s “Gran Chaco” region served as the backdrop to key life sciences research agendas and public health initiatives of the twentieth century. Through an examination of the cross-disciplinary works of Argentine zoologist, schoolteacher, and fiction writer Jorge Washington Ábalos (1915-1979), this investigation reveals how his social and professional identities, together with multiscalar mobilities and (...) networks of knowledge production, came to bear on the ways in which he conducted research, engaged with collaborators during his field practice, and produced knowledge over the course of his career. More broadly, this study posits the sociospatial and cultural specificities of place (in this case the Gran Chaco) as key forces that shape ideas and practices relevant to the history of biology. The study draws from a diverse bibliography of publications from Ábalos’ multifaceted career. His works include scientific reports on the venomous fauna of the Gran Chaco (animal behavior, morphology, and taxonomy), and epidemiological studies of what the global health community today terms “Neglected Tropical Diseases.” These are accompanied by a collection of novels, short stories and autobiographically-inspired accounts of his time spent living in rural landscapes and social contexts. This paper responds to Hahnel’s reply to my paper ‘Pluralism, ecology and planning’ in this special issue. It focuses on disagreements concerning value commensurability and growth. It defends the possibility of rational choices in the use of resources in the absence of value commensurability. It defends the claim that the systematic drive for growth in capitalism is a central source of environmental problems and of environmental injustice. It questions Hahnel’s assertion that substitution in production and consumption alone is the only (...) strategy to achieve environmental sustainability. Substitution is necessary but not sufficient. Environmental limits require consumption and production corridors above sufficiency for all but below excess. Those corridors are a condition for meeting the needs of the poor within environmental limits. Both the examination of environmental problems in capitalism and democratic planning require forms of in-kind analysis defended by Neurath and Kapp to address the problem of meeting human needs within environmental limits. I expand Hegel’s account of non-human animals by arguing that changes in the material conditions of pets complicate his account of animal souls. Through examining “the cry”—a pre-rational, ideal vocalization of infants—I argue that pets also ‘cry,’ thus situating them in an interested, inter-subjective world. This, I argue, is vital to the development of the soul.

This chapter first provides an overview of contemporary understandings of ecological crises, including climate change, as an outcome of human activity. It then describes how psychology has been co-opted into addressing this crisis, particularly in terms of trying to understand what factors determine more ‘sustainable behaviour’. This is followed by an account of a ‘social turn’ in literature concerned with climate change mitigation and adaptation. An analysis is provided of the ways in which ‘the social’ is foregrounded in that literature. (...) Groups of twenty children, aged between 6 years, 7 months and 11 years, 3 months, attending either a traditional Catholic school or a Freinet school were compared on judgments involving moral concepts. Subjects in the two groups were matched for age, IQ, sex, school grade, religious affiliation, fathers’ occupational level, number of siblings and birth order. Moral conflict stories differed in the presence or absence of authority figures and peers, and were set either in the home or the school. Children (...) attending the Freinet school exhibited the more advanced moral judgments for all stories combined. Stories involving peers only elicited more mature judgments than those involving authority figures. Freinet schools encourage democratic group self‐discipline and provide many and varied role‐taking opportunities. The results suggest that such practices accelerate moral development. (shrink)

The idea of representation is central to many theories for embodied skillful action. Representation-centric cognition has been questioned in light of the prominence of E-cognition in the past two decades, including ecological psychology, sensorimotor theory, dynamical systems, and 4E cognition. The paper expands on the critique by offering alternate explanations for the information processing model of skill learning and embodied action. Mental representation plays a fundamental role in information processing explanations of embodied skillful action. The skilled activity is considered discretely (...) in information-theoretic approaches, consisting of a linear model of information input-process-output. According to the paper, the beginning, emergence, acquisition, performance, and mastery of an embodied skilled activity are all part of a human experience continuum. Using vehicle driving as an example, the paper examines diverse viewpoints on embodied skillful action. (shrink)

L’articolo esamina l’importanza del cambiamento di paradigma inaugurato da Papa Francesco con l’uso dell’espressione “casa comune”, allontanandosi dal solito termine di “ambiente” che ha dominato il discorso ecologico negli ultimi decenni. L’autore si sofferma sull’unicità del pianeta Terra visto come una “casa” per ospitare la vita e procede ad esaminare le principali manifestazioni fisiche della crisi ecologica, come vengono indicate nell’enciclica: l’inquinamento, il cambiamento climatico e le sue conseguenze, l’esaurimento delle risorse naturali, la scarsità di acqua potabile, e la perdita (...) della biodiversità. Il Papa avverte che corriamo il rischio di lasciare una casa planetaria non abitabile per le generazioni future, se non siamo disposti a cambiare radicalmente il corso della nostra attuale civiltà. This symposium is based on an edited book of the same name due out in the Fall of 2003 from JAI Press. All of the contributions in this volume relate closely to the theme of the conference on the emergence and evolution of institutions in business and society. Our purpose with the symposium was to showcase some of this new research concerning the increasing strategic importance of environmental concerns within the multinational firm, and to explore the implications of corporate environmental (...) strategy on public policy. This chapter analyzes the relation between the issues of ethics, culture, and environmental concerns in India. It reviews the contribution of some of the main thinkers and activists to environmental ethics and highlights the contribution of the environmental movements to creating awareness of environmental concerns and influencing public policy. This chapter also argues that developed countries have the moral responsibility of ensuring greater equity in sharing the costs of cleaning up the world and in promoting sustainability.

Feminists working in the area of environmental thought argue that ecology is a feminist issue. They have drawn widely on the conceptual and critical resources of feminist philosophy both to develop a more complete feminist account of the world, and to expose masculinism where it appears in both traditional Western ecological thought and in modern environmental philosophy, producing a rich variety of feminist approaches to environmental philosophies. Their efforts have contributed to extending the critical resources and scope of both feminist (...) thought and environmental thought, bringing to each a further major set of concerns, perspectives, and theoretical constraints. 캉길렘에 따르면, 환경은 생명체를 이해하기 위해 필수적인 사유의 범주이다. 환경에 대한 생물학적인 논의는 환경을 생명체의 조직화가 이루어지기 위한 외적 원인 혹은 생명체가 자기의 내적 체계에 따라 구성하는 산물로 개념화한다. 하지만 이러한 개념화는 생명체와 환경을 이항대립 관계로 파악한다는 점에서 불충분하다. 오히려 환경은 생명체의 조직화를 구성하는 인식론적이고 존재론적인 충분 이유로 이해되어야 한다. 이를 위해서는 우선 환경의 이중성에 대한 분석이 요구된다. 환경은 물리적이고 지리적인 동시에 생명체에 의해 구성되는 공간이기도 하다. 이러한 분석에 따르면, 물리적이고 지리적인 환경은 생명체에 대해 잠재적인 환경으로 개념화될 것이다. 잠재적인 환경은 (...) 생명체의 신체와의 마주침을 통해 생명체에 대한 현실적인 환경으로 분화하고, 이때 환경은 생명체에 의해 해결되어야 하는 문제로서 출현한다. 이러한 의미에서 생명체의 조직화는 생명체가 환경에서 제기되는 문제를 해결하는 과정, 즉 생명의 과정을 표현한다. India is one the most important country which has set an example in wildlife conservation efforts in the world. Project Tiger, one of the most ambitious projects to save the Tiger was started in 1973, delivered fruitful results. It was not only the State which played a crucial role in this project, but also community-based traditional knowledge. In precolonial era, the local communities used to conserve the forests and wildlife with their age-old knowledge and set of traditional practices. These practices (...) ensured the mutual coexistence of the animals and human beings. India experienced colonial exploitation by the British. In this whole process, western knowledge systems played a very decisive role. When we talk about International Relations Theory (IRT) and episodes like this, we find a grey area which is out of the conceptual imagination what popularly known as Traditional IRT.
