What is it to be the sea? Explorations of the constitution of the sea – what it comprises, where its borders are, how it incorporates novel entities – offer meaningful insights into the nature of boundaries and identity that are as relevant for humans as they are for the imperilled oceans. At the advent of the post-Anthropocene, when global processes perceptibly react to human impacts, this article elaborates on watery artistic investigations inspired by the mutability and permeability of seas. Outing is conceptually linked to the notion of the “closet”; “coming out of the closet” amounts to publicly acknowledging one’s homosexuality, or at the least one’s participation in sexual activities with persons of the same sex. Outing makes someone’s homosexuality public; they are forced out of the closet, so to speak. Richard Mohr has described it this way: “outing [makes] publicly acknowledged the sexual orientation of a homosexual without regard to whether the person is willing to have this information publicly (...) acknowledged”. Leslie Green provides this definition: “the practice of publicly exposing someone’s presumed sexual orientation, against his or her will, in circumstances where the revelation may be damaging.”. In this paper I defend certain features of F. H. Bradley's moral, and to a lesser extent political, philosophy in the wake of recent feminist critiques of ethics. I attempt to establish congeniality with Bradley's ethical and political theory to current discussions in feminist ethics. Not only is Bradley's idealism consistent with feminist ethics, but it is able to meet several standard feminist objections to traditional moral theory. In spite of making sexist comments characteristic of the nineteenth century, Bradley's ethical-political (...) doctrine does not necessarily imply sexism, and is indeed coextensive with much current feminist theory. Before proceeding to this duscussion it is necessary to undertake a brief review of the intellectual origins of, and current state of debate in, feminist ethics. (shrink)

Like many disciplines, moral philosophy is being subjected to critical scrutiny by feminist scholars. By applying a feminist critique of gender to the area of ethics, feminists pose the question, “Does gender make a difference?” or “Is ethics gendered?” Given that gender differences exist, it stands to reason that these differences might be institutionalized at the level of theory. Given also that different theories highlight different properties of a moral problem, theories can be evaluated according to how well, or how (...) poorly they account for gendered perspectives. Such gender differences need not be explained essentialistically, but may be explained as the result of different socialization strategies and the different social, political and economic standing of men and women. This discussion has seen the revival of the issue over whether ethical theory ought primarily to reflect care or justice, with the former reflecting a consequentialist approach with emphasis on concrete particulars and sentiment, and the latter reflecting a nonconsequentialist approach with emphasis on abstract universals and reason.
