The earliest Analects yet discovered, this work provides us with a new perspective on the central canonical text that has defined Chinese culture--and clearly illuminates the spirit and values of Confucius.

The Analects appears to offer two bodies of testimony regarding the felt, experiential qualities of leading a life of virtue. In its ostensible record of Confucius’ more abstract and reflective claims, the text appears to suggest that virtue has considerable power to afford joy and insulate from sorrow. In the text’s inclusion of Confucius’ less studied and apparently more spontaneous remarks, however, he appears sometimes to complain of the life he leads, to feel its sorrows, and to possess some (...) despair. Where we attend to both of these elements of the text, a tension emerges. In this essay, I consider how Confucius’ complaints appear to complicate any clean conclusion that Confucius wins a good life, particularly where we attend to important pre-theoretical sensibilities regarding what a “good life” ought to include and how it ought to feel for the one who leads it. In this study, Olberding proposes a new theoretical model for reading the _Analects_. Her thesis is that the moral sensibility of the text derives from an effort to conceptually capture and articulate the features seen in exemplars, exemplars that are identified and admired pre-theoretically and thus prior to any conceptual criteria for virtue. Put simply, Olberding proposes an "origins myth" in which Confucius, already and prior to his philosophizing knows _whom _he judges to be virtuous. The work we see him (...) and the _Analects'_ authors pursuing is their effort to explain in an organized, generalized, and abstract way _why _pre-theoretically identified exemplars are virtuous. Moral reasoning here begins with people and with inchoate experiences of admiration for them. Analects 2.3 is a key passage in the construal of Confucius' political and legal thought, but readings of it diverge. Many scholars view it as a broader evaluation of the rule of law relative to that of rites, while some read it more specifically as pertaining to the coercive enforcement of morality. Some read the quotation as an instrumental, conformist tenet, whereas some perceive its humanistic and ethical nature. This essay explores some conceptual and diagnostic frameworks to advance epistemic decolonization in the US philosophical profession. A central focus is the distinction between those philosophies of formerly colonized peoples that are culturally alterior or, simply, alterior and those that are analectical in the Dusselian sense of emerging from a subordinated political position. The paper begins by reflecting upon connections between coloniality, the alterior, and the analectical to frame the discussion of epistemic decolonization in the philosophy profession. It then considers (...) a knower's core theoretic reconstruction in the task of epistemic decolonization and identifies some ambiguities in reconciling alterior traditions with analectical theoretical reconstruction. In the long river of human history, if one person can represent the civilization of a whole nation, it is perhaps Master Kong, better known as Confucius in the West. If there is one single book that can be upheld as the common code of a whole people, it is perhaps Lun Yu, or The Analects. Surely, few individuals in history have shaped their country's civilization more profoundly than Master Kong. The great Han historiographer, Si-ma Qian, writing 2,100 years (...) ago said, "He may be called the wisest indeed!" Chapter 3, on the Analectic Method offers an account of the transition from everyday naive involvement in the world to critical ethical consciousness and from dialectical to ana-dialectical methodology. It discusses the impact of Levinas’s work on Dussel’s account of the key moment of these transitions: the experience of the face-to-face encounter with victims of the prevailing system whom Dussel refers to as the Other. This experience provides an occasion for the one receiving the revelation of the Other to see (...) more clearly those structural features of the prevailing system that cause the Other’s suffering. At the same time, the one receiving the revelation of the Other becomes increasingly aware of his or her own co-responsibility to critique and ultimately transform the unjust socio-economic order. This study investigates the educational thought of Confucius with focus on the educational relationship in the Analects, which is a historical text that defines the foundations of Confucianism. The first part of the investigation examines Confucius’ concept of the educational relationship and how it is characterized with a dialogical spirit, which consists of worldly and secular human-orientedness, co-existentiality as a fundamental principle for educational practice, and dialogue to become an ideal ruler through self-discipline. As one of the main classics of traditional Chinese thought, The Analects undoubtedly played a huge role in shaping Confucian culture and even the entire Chinese traditional culture. However, since the extensive exchange and collision between China and the West in modern times, the question of whether the various schools of thought in Chinese traditional culture can be considered philosophy has arisen.

While the Confucian canon has much to say about women, the Analects contains a few passages that make significant observations about them. These passages deserve the close scrutiny not only because they are all the Analects has to offer on the topic of women, but, more importantly, because at least one passage has been singled out as representing a toxic misogyny that clouds any hope for the continued relevance of Confucianism in today's world. In Analects 17.25, Confucius (...) uniformly and somewhat unfairly dismisses women of servile status as grasping and manipulative, but nevertheless ranks them along with the similarly disconcerting “small men”. While Analects 17.25 also reveals Confucius' awareness of a vague obligation to his inferiors that goes beyond a desire for their unquestioning subservience, in the minds of these lowly figures, his efforts to draw close position him as nothing more than a resource to be exploited. At first glance, it might seem an odd pairing: the Analects and Wittgenstein. Comparison between a classical Chinese philosophical text, whose primary topics were the cultivation of xiao and he, and the corpus of an early to mid-twentieth-century Austrian philosopher, whose primary topics had to do with logic, language, and the nature of philosophy, does not obviously recommend itself. Much is said about what Kongzi liked or cherished. Kongzi revered the rituals of the Zhou. He cherished tradition and classical music. He loved the Odes. Far less is said, however, about what he despised or held in contempt (wu 惡). Yet contempt appears in the oldest stratum of the Analects as a disposition or virtue of moral exemplars. In this chapter, I argue that understanding the role of despising or contempt in the Analects is important in appreciating (...) Kongzi’s dao in two related though distinct ways: 1) exemplary individuals (such as the nobleman) regularly despise people and and hold them in contempt, and 2) reflecting on the targets of contempt might help uncover some tacit worries that Kongzi had concerning his own teachings on self-cultivation. In the concluding section, I state more general reasons why we might consider certain negatively valenced emotions such as contempt to be morally laudable. (shrink)

In support of the thesis that virtue ethics allows for a more comprehensive and consistent interpretation of the "Analects" than other possible models, the author uses a structural outline of a virtue ethic (derived from Alasdair MacIntyre's account of the Aristotelian tradition) to organize a discussion of the text. The resulting interpretation focuses attention on the religious aspects of Confucianism and accounts for aspects of the text that are otherwise difficult to explain. In addition, the author argues that the (...) structural similarities between the Aristotelian and Confucian conceptions of self-cultivation indicate a dimension of commensurability between the two traditions, despite very real variations in specific content. Exemplars clearly play a significant role in the ethical vision of the Analects. However, while they are often treated as illustrations of the text’s more abstract ethical commitments, I argue that they are better understood to source those commitments. Such is to say that the conceptual schemata of the Analects – its account of human flourishing, the specific virtues it recommends, and its suggested path for self cultivation – originate in the people the text so vividly describes, in (...) the unmediated experiences of admiration and appreciation that these figures inspire. Theory is here an attempt to take our responses to exemplars and query just why we admire them, lifting from the examples they provide more general observations about virtue. Drawing on Linda Zagzebski’s’s recent work, I argue that there are both sound textual reasons and important prudential reasons to treat the Analects as exemplarist virtue ethic. (shrink)

There is a growing literature on humility in general and humility in early Chinese thought specificallyFootnote1.Footnote2 This paper aims to provide an account of Confucian humility in the Analects. I argue for a conceptualization of Confucian humility as consisting of three strands, vigilance rooted in love of learning, acknowledgement of others via li, and devotion based on historic conscience. The first two strands form a general kind of Confucian humility, while the last strand is seen only in Kongzi 孔子, (...) who exhibits an idiosyncratic and impressive development of Confucian humility. The three strands are united by their common enemy of self-importance and common goal of moral progress. To argue for my view, I first provide an overview of relevant scholarly work. Then I develop my own view, and revisit scholarship to clarify features of my account and how it differs. This paper aims to address when the wise person should participate in politics. The question is addressed through engagement with the Analects. Rather than provide interpretations of key terms in the Analects, we provide an account of wisdom that draws from themes in the Analects. The case is made that the wise person is committed to participating in politics primarily because of the connection between wisdom and benevolence (ren 仁 in the Analects). We address challenges to (...) the Confucian approach from the Zhuangzi concerning the potential harms of political participation. General political disengagement is not considered exemplary on the Confucian approach to wisdom, although when political engagement may be eschewed is explored. Finally, the case is made that while ren motivates the wise to participate politically, the wise also have a sense of timeliness that provides guidance as to when to refrain or withdraw from political participation. Li (禮) and yi (義) are two central moral concepts in the Analects. Li has a broad semantic range, referring to formal ceremonial rituals on the one hand, and basic rules of personal decorum on the other. What is similar across the range of referents is that the li comprise strictures of correct behavior. The li are a distinguishing characteristic of Confucian approaches to ethics and socio-political thought, a set of rules and protocols that were thought to constitute the (...) wise practices of ancient moral exemplars filtered down through dynasties of the past. However, even while the li were extensive and meant to be followed diligently, they were also understood as incapable of exhausting the whole range of activity that constitutes human life. There were bound to be situations in life where there would be no obvious recourse to the li for guidance. As part of their reflections on the good life, the Confucians maintained another moral concept that seemed to cover morally upright exemplary behavior in these types of situations. This concept is that of yi or rightness. In this chapter, I begin with a brief historical sketch to provide some context, and will then turn to li and yi in turn. In the end, I will suggest how li and yi were both meant to facilitate the supreme value of social harmony that pervades much of the Analects and serves as its ultimate orientation. (shrink)

This paper reframes a long-standing interpretive debate over Analects 14.31 as a normative question in the ethics of trust: under conditions of informational insufficiency, should trust be adopted as a default stance? I argue that the passage does not support such a presumption, but reveals a virtue-based conditionality: trust is neither a pre-given moral requirement nor a passive response to external cues, but is a cultivated stance resting on moral discernment formed through gongfu. To substantiate this claim, I analyze (...) how interpretations of this passage have been mobilized across Confucian contexts to support competing normative accounts of trust. While rejecting trust as a universal default, this Confucian approach affirms its ethical weight as a morally significant stance under uncertainty and offers a critical and constructive alternative to contextual approaches by grounding trust in cultivated moral discernment rather than presumptive stance-taking. Readers of the Analects of Confucius tend to approach the text asking what Confucius believed; what were the views that comprise the 'ism' appended to his name in English? A Reader's Companion to the Confucian Analects suggests a different approach: he basically taught his students not doctrines, but ways for each of them to find meaning and purpose in their lives, and how best to serve their society. Because his students were not alike, his instruction could not be (...) uniform; hence the large number of incompatible readings that have been given to what he said. By providing brief essays, finding lists, background and comparative materials, and historical context, this Companion is not intended as another interpretation of the ancient text, but rather as an aid for contemporary students to develop their own interpretive reading of it, in the hope of thereby aiding them in the search for meaning, purpose, and service in their own lives - as seventy-three generations of Chinese have done. Interpreting the graph ren 仁 has been the subject of much philological and philosophical study and speculation over the centuries among scholars both Chinese and Western, perhaps more than any other single graph. This study examines the Korean translations of a Japanese work Joshi no rongo [女子の論語/Women’s Analects] (Yuki, Ako [祐木亜子]. 2011. 女子の論語. Tokyo: Sunmark Publishing House), a modern interpretation of the Chinese classic The Analects, with a view to identifying how the paratexts of a translated text contributed, or hindered the reception of the work in the target culture. By drawing on Gérard Genette’s (1997 [1987]. Paratexts: Threshold of interpretation, Jane E. Lewin (trans.). Cambridge: Cambridge University Press) concept of “paratexts,” (...) this study both analyses translation shifts in the peritexts (e.g., cover, foreword, table of contents) and the epitexts (reviews) of the Korean translations. The analysis shows that the additions and rearrangements of some paratextual elements in the Korean translation further reinforced the traditional view presented in the source text, which ironically brought about heavy criticisms of the original Japanese text and resulted in the Korean retranslation of the work. The scrutiny of peritexts and epitexts in this article will enhance our understanding of the interactions between the translator, the publisher, and the public readers, which jointly contextualize the production and reception of a translated work in a given culture. It argues that Hegel’s disappointment stems from three core issues: the subordination of free subjects to ethics, the obstruction of historical dialectics by ritual and hierarchy, and the masking of power inequalities through moral discourse. The study examines both philosophical and civilizational dimensions, revealing that while Confucian ethics maintains social stability and cultural continuity, it sacrifices spiritual freedom and historical unfolding. 'Jiwoohak' in Confucian Analects is described as one stage of the six-process of life written by Confucius after he recalls his own life. Since Confucius is suggested as a incarnation of sage and also as a being of ideal living, many Confucian scholars have paid attention to this direct description of Confucius's life. Nevertheless, the Confucian scholars show different opinions on a detailed interpretation, especially on the interpretation on 'Isoon(耳順)'. He thinks that the three-process of 'Boolhok(不惑)' - 'Jicheonmyeong(知天命)' - 'Isoon' is an intensive course of 'Ji'. But, this Zhu Xi's interpretation is rejected by some of the later scholars such as Dasan Chong Yak-Yong, Ito Jinsai and Jiao Xun etc. These later scholars interpret that 'Isoon' is a stage of being not offensive when someone hears of something against the process of nature or slander on oneself. And they regard Zhu Xi's interpretation as a mistranslation by his impractical attempt to sanctify Confucius. However, Zhu Xi's interpretation is based on his Theory of Mind-Nature and the six-process is applied not to a sage but to an ordinary human. Therefore, to raise a question on Zhu Xi's interpretation means to disagree the sanctification of human designated by Zhu Xi and Dasan Chong Yak-Yong and Ito Jinsai stand on that position. Then, Zhu Xi's interpretation on ‘Jiwoohak’ should be read in the context of his Mind-Nature Theory not to misread it. In addition, to analyze his interpretation on the six-process of life can help Zhu Xi's Theory of Mind-Nature and understanding of human. This paper focuses on that the three-process of 'Boolhok' - 'Jicheonmyeong' - 'Isoon' is an intensive course of 'Ji'. Zhu Xi accounts that 'Boolhok' is to know in terms of Sa(事, affair), 'Jicheonmyeong' is to know in terms of Li(理, principle) and 'Isoon' is to be well versed in terms of both Sa and Li. The progress of 'Sa - Li - Li and Sa' can be explained as 'phenomenalistic knowing - substantialistic knowing - knowing the unit of phenomenon and substance' as Avatamsaka shows. The development of this three-process means not an increase or extend of the knowledge but a leap and qualitative transformation of a subject and object. (shrink)
