On the Categoricity of Complete Second-Order Theories.Tapio Saarinen, Jouko Antero Väänänen & William Hugh Woodin - forthcoming - Journal of Symbolic Logic:1-23.
We show, assuming PD, that every complete finitely axiomatized second-order theory with a countable model is categorical, but that there is, assuming again PD, a complete recursively axiomatized second-order theory with a countable model which is non-categorical. We show that the existence of even very large (e.g., supercompact) cardinals does not imply the categoricity of all finitely axiomatizable complete second-order theories. More exactly, we show that a non-categorical complete finitely axiomatized second-order theory can always be obtained by (set) forcing. We (...)

New Results in Model Theory and Set Theory.Clovis Hamel - 2024 - Bulletin of Symbolic Logic 30 (4):543-544.
Traditionally, the role of general topology in model theory has been mainly limited to the study of compacta that arise in first-order logic. In this context, the topology tends to be so trivial that it turns into combinatorics, motivating a widespread approach that focuses on the combinatorial component while usually hiding the topological one. This popular combinatorial approach to model theory has proved to be so useful that it has become rare to see more advanced topology in model-theoretic articles. Prof. (...)

    Characterizing Downwards Closed, Strongly First-Order, Relativizable Dependencies.Pietro Galliani - 2019 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 84 (3):1136-1167.
In Team Semantics, a dependency notion is strongly first order if every sentence of the logic obtained by adding the corresponding atoms to First-Order Logic is equivalent to some first-order sentence. In this work it is shown that all nontrivial dependency atoms that are strongly first order, downwards closed, and relativizable (in the sense that the relativizations of the corresponding atoms with respect to some unary predicate are expressible in terms of them) are definable in terms of constancy atoms. Additionally, (...)

Definability of second order generalized quantifiers.Juha Kontinen - 2010 - Archive for Mathematical Logic 49 (3):379-398.
We study second order generalized quantifiers on finite structures. One starting point of this research has been the notion of definability of Lindström quantifiers. We formulate an analogous notion for second order generalized quantifiers and study definability of second order generalized quantifiers in terms of Lindström quantifiers.

Simple monadic theories and partition width.Achim Blumensath - 2011 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 57 (4):409-431.
We study tree-like decompositions of models of a theory and a related complexity measure called partition width. We prove a dichotomy concerning partition width and definable pairing functions: either the partition width of models is bounded, or the theory admits definable pairing functions. Our proof rests on structure results concerning indiscernible sequences and finitely satisfiable types for theories without definable pairing functions. © 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A General Setting for Dedekind's Axiomatization of the Positive Integers.George Weaver - 2011 - History and Philosophy of Logic 32 (4):375-398.
A Dedekind algebra is an ordered pair (B, h), where B is a non-empty set and h is a similarity transformation on B. Among the Dedekind algebras is the sequence of the positive integers. From a contemporary perspective, Dedekind established that the second-order theory of the sequence of the positive integers is categorical and finitely axiomatizable. The purpose here is to show that this seemingly isolated result is a consequence of more general results in the model theory of second-order languages. (...)
