Abstract

Drawing on acculturation theory, this chapter empirically analyzes the determination model of rural and urban identity choices among migrant workers. After reviewing current acculturation models and research on social identity, this chapter proposes several hypotheses on determinants of social identity among this population of Chinese workers, tests these with data from samples in Shanghai, and finally discusses and suggests the extension of acculturation research within the Chinese migrant population and its implications for public policy.
