Abstract

It is easy to underestimate the role Science of Review plays in Peirce's thought.1 This is not only because the dozen or so passages in which he speaks about this elementary division of science are rather short and written in that somewhat arid diction he adopts when galloping through his scheme of the classification of sciences, but also because he, time and again, carves into the reader's mind that the animating spirit of science neither dwells in nor emanates from the systematization of results already obtained2 but rather lives in the cooperative work of heuretic scientists who "desire to learn what is not already known".
