Abstract
The Invariance Maintenance Condition (IMC) is a substrate-agnostic framework for identifying and characterizing systems that maintain structural invariants under perturbation at measurable cost. Five companion translations have applied the IMC to nonequilibrium thermodynamics, immunology, anesthesia state transitions, ecological population regulation, and computational learning theory. This paper argues that those five translations are not confirmations of the same claim in different settings. They are structural probes of the framework itself: each domain was selected because it exposes a different property of the IMC that no other domain in the series makes visible. Thermodynamics exposes the energetic grounding of maintenance cost. Immunology exposes regulatory network persistence under distributed maintenance. Anesthesia exposes experimentally accessible thresholds with pre-registered empirical commitment. Ecology exposes multi-generation persistence and makes timescale independence undeniable. Computational learning theory exposes a theoretical gap in an existing formal field — the missing maintenance sample rate bound — and demonstrates that the framework operates diagnostically in mature formal domains, not only descriptively. Taken together, the five translations establish four cross-domain structural results that no individual translation produces alone: (1) the precursor maintenance-cost signal is a domain-independent prediction, appearing in all five translations in domain-native form; (2) the framework’s geometry is timescale-independent across at least ten orders of magnitude in evaluation interval; (3) the Category 1 / Category 2 distinction is a principled taxonomy of the relationship between the framework and its target domains, not a quality gradient; and (4) the origin of constraint topology — physical law, evolution, or intentional design — is irrelevant to the maintenance dynamics that operate within it. The anesthesia translation carries a pre-registered empirical commitment that, if confirmed, changes the evidentiary status of the entire series.
Note on scope: This paper addresses the IMC series strictly at the level of structural persistence and maintenance dynamics. The relationship between these results and broader theoretical frameworks addressing identity, consciousness, or recursive self-recognition is not treated here. The IMC’s applicability conditions are necessary but not sufficient for any of those richer characterizations; the present series establishes the necessary conditions, not the richer claims.
