Abstract

This chapter explores the relationship between those who seek to find the love of their life and Jung’s process of individuation. The term Romantic is one who holds the belief in a destined partner. In recognizing the shift in modern romantic relationship trends, this chapter broadens Jung’s view of marriage as a psychological relationship to include Romantics who are committed to finding a partner but may not be married or partnered at the time. The Romantic instead uses their commitment to the journey of finding their partner to develop themselves psychologically. Romantics seek transcendence in their relationships, and encountering archetypes is a way of reaching beyond the personal realm of existence. The chapter discusses common archetypes associated with romantic relationships (i.e. Self, anima/animus, and syzygy) and explores how they manifest in common experiences Romantics face on their path to partnership: “the one,” synchronicity and fated encounters, and heartbreak. Being a Romantic is hard work, as it requires the fortitude necessary to overcome the inevitable setbacks, disappointments, and heartbreak on the journey to actualizing mature and meaningful love. While there are no guarantees of finding a soulmate relationship, the chapter argues the path to such a love is individuation.
