Abstract

This chapter, “Values in the Political Soap Opera,” delves into the intricate interplay between values, politics, and society, examining the fluid and dynamic nature of values in the context of contemporary political discourse. Using examples from Angela Merkel’s refugee policy to the aftermath of terrorist attacks, the chapter explores the paradoxes and ambiguities inherent in political discussions about values. It questions the fixation on preserving static values in a rapidly changing world and highlights the importance of multiple perspectives and adaptability. The chapter critiques the tendency to frame values as rigid and universally binding, arguing instead for a more nuanced understanding that embraces irony, indifference, and a diverse range of viewpoints. Ultimately, it suggests that an ironically leavened solidarity, coupled with a healthy dose of indifference, may offer a more effective approach to navigating the complexities of values in politics and society.
