Recursive Protocols: Specification Practice and Architectural Legibility

Abstract

Architectural specifications are not neutral instruments of technical coordination but recursive protocols through which architectural legibility is produced and sustained. Focusing on North American specification and documentation practice, this article argues that master specifications, cross-referenced clauses, digital templates, and contract documents reactivate prior decisions as present conditions of design validity. Earlier formulations do not merely persist as precedent; they return as operative criteria for recognising compliant objects, valid assemblies, coordinated scopes, and legitimate users. Drawing on systems theory, Science and Technology Studies, and professional experience in specification writing, it distinguishes four interlocking registers of recursion: documentary, software, institutional-temporal, and ontological. These registers are developed through an analysis of MasterSpec and MasterFormat workflows, the persistence of the Kawneer 1600 curtain wall system across documents and assemblies, and accessibility standards under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Specifications do more than organise technical information: they reproduce the conditions under which architecture becomes legible, while carrying forward exclusions and asymmetries of professional authority
