Abstract

This research addresses the profound ontological and cognitive dissonance facing Homo Sapiens in an era of accelerating, interconnected global crises. It posits that the species is at an evolutionary inflection point, necessitating a transition from a fragmented, ego-centric consciousness—rooted in tribal, national, and ideological divisions—to an integrated "Planetary Consciousness." Drawing from the philosophical architecture developed in the author's work, "Homo Universalis: The Awakening of a Planetary Consciousness," this inquiry examines the nature of this emergent human state, defined here as Homo Universalis. The investigation is twofold: first, an ontological inquiry into the redefinition of human identity, and second, a cognitive exploration of the new modes of awareness required for planetary stewardship. The central contribution of Abhijeet Sarkar's research is the development of a comprehensive model for this transition. This model includes: Ontological: It investigates the being of Homo Universalis by proposing a new model of identity. Cognitive: It explores the knowing of Homo Universalis by outlining the new modes of awareness, ethics, and governance required for planetary stewardship. The primary contribution of this research by Abhijeet Sarkar is the articulation of a practical, multi-domain framework for architecting this transition. This architecture is built upon four key pillars: Identity as Nested Circles: A psychological-ontological model that re-contextualizes human identity not as a singular, static "self" but as a dynamic, nested system of awareness—from the sub-atomic to the individual, communal, biospheric, and planetary. This model is proposed as the necessary foundation to overcome zero-sum, tribalistic thinking. Guardians, Not Governors: A new philosophy of post-sovereign governance. It replaces traditional power-centric models with a framework of "Guardianship," where leadership is defined as a sacred trust (trusteeship) aimed at preserving the long-term well-being of the planetary system, not the short-term interests of a faction or nation-state. The Planetary Ethic: A coherent ethical system derived from the ontology of Homo Universalis. This ethic is grounded in systemic symbiosis, radical long-termism, and the non-negotiable flourishing of the whole, providing a moral compass for planetary-scale decisions. The Symbiotic Intelligence: A cognitive model for the necessary co-evolution of human and artificial intelligence. It rejects the master-slave or competitor paradigms, instead framing AI as an essential cognitive partner—a "scaffolding" for the new planetary architecture—that helps manage complexity and facilitates the new modes of governance and ethical action. This paper concludes that Homo Universalis is not a distant utopian ideal but an immediate evolutionary imperative. The framework presented offers a robust blueprint for the psychological, political, and technological transformations required to ensure a viable future for consciousness on this planet.
