Abstract

This chapter discusses the semantic behaviour of indexical expressions. Its main themes include the treatment of recorded messages, the assessment of the contextualist criticism of the traditional view of indexicality, and the analysis of discourse about fiction. Its main conclusion pertains to the logical behaviour of indexical languages, and challenges the restriction of semantic analysis to so-called proper contexts.
