Abstract

My motivation to philosophically explore the teacher-student relationship is driven by the assumption that the relationship between teacher and student is an important element of education at school and as such irreplaceable. The central aim of this book is to find out more about the specific character of the teacher-student relationship and what it is that renders this relationship valuable, both for education in itself and for the teacher and student participating in the relationship. In answering some fundamental philosophical questions about the teacher-student relationship, I want to shed light on the normative structure of the teacher-student relationship, its role in teaching and learning, and its final value for teacher and student. This will help us to better understand the importance of this relationship for those participating in it and for reaching the epistemic aims of education at school.
