Abstract

This chapter considers various forms of skepticism regarding the essences of material substances: can we know those essences? are substances neatly divided into kinds? do substances even have essences? Scholastic attempts to deal with such doubts are contrasted with various more‐or‐less radical proposals from the seventeenth century.
