Infinity as Dynamic Continuity

Abstract

This article proposes a comprehensive framework for understanding infinity not as a fixed mathematical object, but as dynamic continuity—a perpetually growing process whose absolute expression is the universe itself, understood as the totality of all existence. By integrating perspectives from mathematics (potential vs. actual infinity), philosophy (ontological categories), and cosmology (universal expansion), we defend three interconnected propositions: (1) Mathematical infinity must be distinguished from ontological infinity; (2) the universe as total existence constitutes a candidate for "absolute infinity"; (3) the empirical fact of cosmic expansion provides physical illustration of infinity as non-static process. We address tensions between formal mathematics and cosmological intuition, clarify conceptual confusions, and propose a three-tier framework organizing infinity across domains. This work bridges analytic philosophy of mathematics with contemporary cosmology, demonstrating that a dynamic conception of infinity—neither fully actual nor merely potential—offers philosophical coherence while remaining empirically grounded.
