Abstract

This chapter focuses on food security and nutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), including both its domestic dimensions as well as the region’s contributions to global food and environmental balances. It briefly considers potential programs and policies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly number 2. The first section utilizes several indicators to characterize food security and nutrition in LAC, their evolution over time and current conditions. Based on that analysis, the second section briefly outlines a general framework of potential policy interventions, which include supply and demand side topics, as well as other aspects that set the context. Based on that framework, the third section focuses in greater detail on the possible interventions related to agricultural and rural development, which is the mandate of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). It highlights the Hemispheric Partnership for Food Security and Sustainable Development that IICA has proposed. The final section presents a brief conclusion.
